Another KVS recruit declared today his intent to wear maroon and gold and to follow in his older (and bigger) brother's footsteps.
Chelsea High School's Jake Mantel -- 6-4 and 215 -- will be joining John at Calvin next season. I have this on the highest possible authority (thanks for the tip, CCM).
At Chelsea, Jake's been been a standout both in football (tight end) and in basketball (small forward who plays a tenacious defense and knows his way to the hoop on offense).
Welcome aboard the Knight train, Jake!  There's always room for another Mantel. ;D

Hmmm ... Can his competitive instincts be trusted?  Seems like a real competitor would have gone to Hope and try to whup big bro! ;D

If he was really competetive then he would have gone to Trine and tried to beat him from there.   :D

More good news for the Knights!  I am interested to see just how many new guys the Knights get.  With 6 seniors leaving there should be plenty of PT to be had by newbies.

Has anyone heard anything about college choices for Saginaw Valley Lutheran's Aaron Meckes?  I think I remember seeing him with his father and Josh at Van Noord Arena for a late season game (maybe the Adrian game or the Trine or Olivet tournament game... I don't remember which).  Brothers Nate and Josh were both very successful Calvin athletes.  According to maxpreps he is 6-5, 235 and averages about 13 and 6.

I'm glad these guys are looking to attend Calvin, or any other MIAA school, but just how are they paying for it?  I can't get my head around the cost of attending Hope or Calvin or any small school.

Arena:  Having some family members attending Calvin it is important to talk with the financial aid people prior to making any college decision.  Part of the current fund raising program goes to scholarships, and I read somewhere just the other day about 200+ new scholarships at the college in the recent past.  There are a number of areas in a person's life when it is important to consider more than just the price.  Do/would you shop for the "cheapest": doctor, lawyer or accountant? :)
Granted I am biased, but IMHO the extra $$ one might pay to attend Calvin is offset by the quality of the education received.  If you spread the extra cost over the typical students 40 -50 year life expectancy it really is a small investment for the value received.
I do not recall any of the larger schools (public or private) centering their advertising around being a "cut-rate or bargin" center for a diploma. :D

Very rarely does a college student pay the entire cost of tuition.  The per year cost of tuition, room, and board at Hope is around 30K, yet the average amount that a student pays is around 22k, with many paying less than that.  Still much more expensive than state schooling or receiving an athletic scholarship, but not as much as it may initially seem.

Didnt know God (highest possible?)  cared about recruiting! ::)

Glad he was a football player....now he can lead Calvin to the mythical football team championship  ;)

Family is what makes MIAA (and D3 schools in general)  special

Powell is a scorer, much created by the style Park plays- up and down trying to outscore their opponent with little emphasis on defense.  I would have liked to see him play a season in the OK Red which plays out a lot like in MIAA, tough man-to man, grind it out, and not very pretty.  Byran is quick, but will have to spend some serious time in the weightroom in order to contribute next year (at least as much as some of you already expect him to) Two words - Micah Chappell.  Powell is better but Micah was a scorer as well....

It is great to see Calvin strike first on the recruiting radar, the new facilities have already made a difference and more kids are sure to follow suit.  i have heard that one of the Zeeland East kids is coming as well ( not Korey), not the quarterback.

I too have always thought harper was overrated.  But in an uptempo style (AAU) his ATHLETIC ABILITY stands out.  You can't coach it.

Bryan Powell = Derek Griffin but shorter and a worse passer...seen 'em both ALOT in HS

if "worse passer" = doesn't pass, that would be accurate.  But everything park does goes through him, which IS the correct approach WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE OTHER SCORING OPTIONS, which park does not.  Powell will be very good in a couple years.

I have had feelers out for other recruits and their decisions but haven't much much back as far as confirmation.

I am having lunch with some old friends with strong connections to WHAC programs tomorrow, maybe they'll have some insight.  Maybe some transfer info??? Snikkers to Calvin??? just kidding....

Would not be shocked if there's a Snikkers to Calvin story in the future.

just spoke to a wm hs coach with some younger talent and he mentioned that Calvin is in position for "a huge recruitng class from the wm area alone this year and next".  take it for what its worth....Having tommy at calvin would be tough on the parents with athletes at hope, calvin and cornerstone.
