I attended the MHSAA Class A and B Semi-Finals Friday and all the Finals on Saturday.  I think Derrick Nix won the Mr. Basketball because he signed with MSU.  He couldn't play more than 4 minutes in a stretch either Friday or Saturday.  His conditioning is poor and he lacks basketball skill.

I saw KVS, GVW,(in his coach's uniform Fri minus the tie) Jody May, Gene Gifford on Friday.  Terry Smith, Matt Neill on Sat.

Zeeland East and Korey VD looked great Friday night.  Flint Powers did a great job Sat night as OK has already pointed out.  Al Sr used to say "if you cut off the head the body will die" and that's what Powers did to Zeeland East.  They played VanDussen to go to his left and he could not beat them off the dribble moving to his left.  Snuggerud had 2-3 silly fouls Friday night but he played well both nights.

West Michigan Christian has a couple kids that maybe players.  Evan Bruinsma, a 6'5" junior, plays similar to a Matt Veltema, had a very good game Sat.  London Burris, a sophomore point guard, also had a good game.

Keith Appling was phenomenal.

Doug Anderson puts you on the edge of your seat.

Evan Bruinsma comes from good Frisian basketball genes. Seasoned observers such as OK may remember Evan's uncle Sid Bruinsma who was a star for Holland Christian in the early 70's, later went on to be an all-american at GVSU and subsequently a star for the Dutch National basketball team. Evan's brother Nate starred for last year's team and is now playing college ball. Trinity Christian maybe?

I saw GVSU play at Calvin in I believe, 76 or 77.  GVSU had Bruinsma, Paul Peterman, George Fuller, Ed Moultrie on what was a great team.  One of those Calvin-GVSU games went double or triple overtime with GVSU coach Tom Villemure being ejected and watching the rest of the game standing on the mezzanine.  I think it took 3 technicals back then to get ejected.

Sid Bruinsma (Brew-in sma) also changed how his name was pronounced.  Most of the Dutch folk had (and still do) pronounced it "Brine-sma"

TCC does have a Will Bruinsma (no idea how he pronounces his last name ;)) from West Michigan Christian on its roster, but he was a junior this past season. He played a year at Dordt, and has since played for TCC for the past two years.

They are brothers.  There is a third brother, Nate, who is a 2008 graduate of WMC who is listed on the Western Illinois University soccer team and was redshirted this year.

Will is the older brother. I knew Nate had gone to play soccer somewhere in Illinois, but couldn't remember where. Their aunt is married to a well-known Calvin faculty member who evidently didn't have enough pull to get any of them to wear the maroon and gold.

It's FRISIAN, not Dutch! (I trust GK will join me in insisting on the distinction.)

Pier Gerlofs Donia is rolling over in his grave yet again at the calumny that one of his fellow sons of Frisia has been tarred with the brush of the dastardly Dutch.

As "Grutte Pier" once said, Leaver dea as slaef! That's Frisian for "Better dead than slave!"
