Knight In The Stan

Let me know if anyone is going to be in Destin Fl this Spring Break, I would enjoy talking up some hoops and sipping on some soda...

Just notice on Mlive's West Michigan section that Kelvin Grady has left Michigan(which may not be news here) and initially the rumor on there was he was considering Hope and Calvin, but a more recent post on there, and also confirmed by "sac" is that he is looking at DePaul and Notre Dame.

Now seriously hopehoopfan, you should know by now that Mlive is the worse source for any reliable information. ::) :P  Indeed, the majority of the time, nothing but rumors and misinformation on there, unfortunately by many miscreants intent on "stirring up" the situations and conversation.  I believe that most of the serious posters here have avoided participating on that forum. ;D  While we do have some occasional rumors on this and the other boards of this website (which is obviously unavoidable and nothing wrong with that as long as it is not intentional), IMO, the majority of the posters on here are serious and have the best integrity to try and "report" factually (the latter is not directed at you whatsoever - please know that I am not accusing you of doing that at all, but rather I'm just relating my opinion that I view you and our fellow posters here as being more responsible and reliable in your posting as compared to many of those who participate on MLive).   In that regard, we've observed that if (most of) our colleagues here are simply offering their personal opinions, those are at least legit and serious speculation as compared to the wild "rumor mill" over on Mlive.  Again, just MO. ;)

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see where Grady ends up.  BTW, did you or anyone happen to read why he was leaving?  I'll assume it was regarding playing time, although, admittedly, I do not know and thus, that is just offering my own inquiry and not suggesting it a rumor or fact.  Rather just inquiring if you or others know ;D ;)  Thanks.

Formerd3db is correct about the reliability of mlive's forums. It's a fount of misinformation and mostly inhabited by illiterate juveniles. Compared to the standard mlive poster, Greg Sager is Grantland Rice, Goodknight is Heywood Hale Broun, and the rest of us should be in the running for a Pulitzer.

As for Kelvin Grady's departure from U of M, that one caught me completely by surprise. He started 33 games his first two years in Ann Arbor. Given the fact that Beilein released Grady from his scholarship, it seems likely that Kelvin isn't going to another D-I institution. I have no idea where he might wind up but the first school that comes to my mind is Grand Valley.

Kelvin Grady's PT went down as the year went on, ....to a walk-on.  Michigan has a good PG coming in next year so the situation wasn't going to really get better for him.  Plus he doesn't seem like the right fit for that goofy offense.  I'm not sure what happened because in early December he looked like he'd have a big year, perhaps something personal came into play.

He can join fellow Amaker recruit Jarret Smith on the GVSU squad.  A more reliable site than mlive (a blog of all things) has Notre Dame and DePaul as options.   GVSU is rumored to have just one spot left, they would like a point gaurd, they haven't offered any high schoolers...........math is not hard.

Goodknight mentioned the kid from Covenant Christian headed to Calvin played in the rugged River Valley.  For those unfamilar here's what the River Valley has produced in the MHSAA Class D tournament.........

2009 Muskegon Western Michigan Christian --Class D Champion
2008 Muskegon Western Michigan Christian--Class D Champion
2007 Wyoming Tri-unity Christian--Class D Runner-up
2006 Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian--Class D Champion
2004 Wyoming Tri-unity Christian--Class D Runner-up
2002 Wyoming Tri-unity Christian--Class D Champion
2000 Muskegon Western Michigan Christian--Class D Runner-up
1999 Muskegon Western Michigan Christian--Class D Champion
1997 Wyoming Tri-unity Christian--Class D Runner-up
1996 Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian--Class D Champion
1994 Grand Rapids Covenant Christian--Class D Champion
1993 Grand Rapids Covenant Christian--Class D Champion
         Muskegon Western Michigan Christian--Class D Runner-up
1992 Muskegon Western Michigan Christian--Class D Champion

If it wasn't for Olivet's McClary brothers in 2005, the River Valley would be on a 6 year streak of state final appearances.  Bellaire beat Tri-Unity in the semi-finals that year.

unless Kelvin is no longer in contact with his father, there is NO WAY he ends up at GVSU.  Dad  spent a lifetime trying to showcase his son as an elite player, nationwide.  Hundreds of hours talking to coaches and thousands of $$$$ promoting him.

You have to have personal experiences with Kevin SR. or his program (Grady Elite) to truly understand what I'm getting at. I've seen and heard stories, alot of them. Nearly everyone with a conscience in AAU dispises and loathes the man. Unless their kid earned a scholly...

Kelvin will end up at a school that had/has ties to the Hurricanes.  Unless dad is done with him, like Kelvin's younger brother Robert Bell from EGR.  Disowned him basically.

On the cusp of spring break, Calvin picks up a commitment from 6-4 wing Matt DeBoer from Covenant Christian, a Class C school in the tough River Valley Conference in West Michigan.  Covenant Christian went 5-5 in the league this year, knocking off Class D champion Western Michigan Christian during conference play.  Covenant is the Protestant Reformed-owned school that provided Hope with the core of their mid-90s powerhouse teams, Joel Holstege and David Muehlenburg.  Calvin's Josh Engelsma -- *sigh* -- is also a Covenant Christian grad.

Matt averaged more than 20 ppg for Covenant Christian his senior year, earning both all-conference honors and placement on the Bankhoops.com All-State fourth team.

Another nice addition for the Knights -- and get ready for a flurry of activity that traditionally follows spring break.

Sounds like Calvin is putting together a very good recruiting class. By my count, they've added the PG Powell, wings DeBoer and Jake Mantel, and PF Meckes.  Would like to see another big and another shooter.

Mr. Ypsi

My apologies to Spartan fans.  I'm a Wolverine, but somehow inexplicably became the Spartan 'good luck' charm.  EVERY game I've seen this year, MSU rallied after I turned on the game.  Against Louisville, they promptly went from down 4 to up 5.  Alas, I came too late to the title game: they were already down 23.  While I was watching, MSU won by 6, but, alas, that is not how they score the games.  Sorry. :P

Received my copy of Io Triumphe!, The Magazine for Alumni and Friends of
Albion College in the mail yesterday.

Two articles of interest in this issue:
1. Marty Nesbitt, '85
2. Mike Turner, '69

Click on the issue with a photo of Marty Nesbitt on the cover with "Inner Circle."

This will bring up a "pdf" copy and you will have to scroll down to find the

So the first charter school to win a state title isn't so anymore.

Oh man...tough situation for the other kids on the team...   :-\

One fact missing is that he is transferring to Olivet(again, according to Mlive) ;D

Ah, the glories of extrapolation:

Miguel Cabrera is currently on pace to bat .611, with 97 homers and 324 RBIs! :o ;D

BTW, his 3 for 5 day in the Tigers home opener LOWERED his BA from .615 to .611! ::)  Slacker! :P

mrknight

Just looked up the stats on Dustin Orns-

Averaged 33 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists a game as a senior.  For Spring Arbor he averaged just over 2 points a game and finished with 8 rebounds on the year. It'll be interesting to see how he fits into the play of the MIAA after playing against schools like Bethel, Grace, and Indiana Wesleyan
