So, did KVS sell his soul???  All this good news makes me nervous

This is would be called...PROVIDENTIAL

In trying to explain the reasons for what appears to be a strong incoming freshmen class for the Knights, I'll leave the Calvinistic theological underpinnings of this good news to others. Let me propose three temporal explanations which run concurrent with the Lord's providential work.

1) The recently concluded high school season was a particularly strong one with respect to Calvin's natural recruiting territory. From my observations of high school hoops, the past season seemed to be a particularly strong one in western Michigan with respect to the number of seniors who unquestionably are strong candidates for success at the D3 (or NAIA) level, but who are far less likely to play if going D1 or D2. If you want to play college hoops, playing at a place like Calvin which gets a fair amount of notice has some attractiveness. Not everyone wants to go the Austin Thornton route, the Cedar Springs player who would prefer to sit at the end of Tom Izzo's bench rather than be a regular at a different level of competition.

2) Following up on number 1), there's no question that VanNoord Arena is a headturner for local talent. Bryan Powell was pretty much quoted in the GR Press as saying that Calvin got on his radar screen once he saw the facility. He mentioned that he hadn't thought of Calvin as a destination until he watched a game there. Given Calvin's traditional support, playing in what I believe is D3's finest basketball venue can make the difference in recruitment.

3) This is a good year to be an entering freshmen hoopster at Knollcrest if you're a talented high school senior. While Calvin has 3 proven scorers returning next season (plus Salo, who is the obvious first choice to inherit the point), the Knights lost 6 seniors from last year's team, and 5 of them played a lot of minutes. To me, KVS has only 2 obvious choices of returning players to fill those holes (one JV, one on the current varsity roster).  It's common to lose a player or two who didn't graduate and with the talent choices now available, I could easily see 3 or 4 freshmen who could play enough minutes to justify keeping them on the varsity roster. In addition, Calvin's top two returning scorers (Mantel and Veltema) are seniors leaving a lot of points (and minutes) available over the following three years for the entering freshmen class.

That was well said...thank you for that.

I understand that Paul Bramos will be attending Hope next year.  He is a very talented guard out of Grosse Pointe North (they went 23-2 this year).  His brother Mike has been a standout at Miami of Ohio over the past few years.

I don't know much about Paul Bramos.......... except he was named to the Detroit Free Press All Metro East honorable mentions

Judging from a small picture in some obscure southeast michigan online paper, I'll put him in a range from 5-10 to 6-3. ;)

The Holland Sentinel has a link on their web page saying that Van Dussen is going to go to UNC Greensboro.

Here's the link http://www.hollandsentinel.com/sports/x1092974780/Chixs-guard-headed-to-North-Carolina

Not much there at the moment.  Should be more in tomorrow's paper.

Interesting choice for VanDussen.
Calvin fans may remember that UNC-Greensboro offered a scholly to Jeremy Veenstra, which he turned down to become a red-headed Knight.
And Ed Douma was Greensboro's head coach from 1982-84, just before he returned to his alma mater.

Here's a clip on another recruit for UNC-Greensboro which tells me Van Dussen will likely move to a shooting guard:

"Top 30 point guard Kyle Randall commits to UNCG

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro men's basketball coach Mike Dement received a signed commitment from point guard Kyle Randall on Wednesday, the first day of the National Letter of Intent program's late signing period.

Randall is a Top 30 rated point guard out of Kennedy Catholic in Hermitage, PA. Randall, who measures at 6-foot and 165 lbs., was the Class A Player of the Year in Pennsylvania, scoring a Kennedy Catholic and Mercer County record 2,022 points. He broke the 2,000-point mark in the PIAA Class A Championship game, an 80-70 setback to Girard College in which Randall scored 33 points at the Bryce Jordan Center on the Penn State campus. Kennedy Catholic went 26-3 on the year.

"We are very excited to have Kyle and his family join our program," said Dement. "For most of this year, we have been trying to recruit a point guard who can score and we are fortunate that we were able to be involved with Kyle and his recruitment. He is an outstanding student, having visited Stanford and Harvard last fall. We project that he will come into our program and impact our lineup right away. Kyle has the ability to put up big numbers by scoring in a variety of ways. He has the ability to get into the lane and draw fouls; he is an excellent free throw shooter and is a very intelligent player who leads well.  He has that point guard mentality of making other the players around him better.

"With our move to the Greensboro Coliseum for our home games next season and our challenging schedule that will likely include several ACC schools, Kyle comes in at a great time and has a tremendous opportunity ahead of him.  He will have an outstanding career here at UNC Greensboro."

Randall averaged 26.5 points and 5.5 assists per game this past season at Kennedy Catholic. He scored 37 points in the state semifinal against Scotland School despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter. A native of Youngstown, OH, which is just across the state line from Hermitage, Randall also had 48 points in a game, breaking the school's single-game mark.

Randall is rated the 30th best point guard nationally in the class of 2009 according to ESPN and Scouts, Inc. based on his ability to attack off the dribble and knock down shots consistently with his mid-range game. He led the state of Pennsylvania in scoring as a junior, also averaging 26.5 points per contest."

speaking of zeeland...did snuggerud also end up at calvin, or is he still considering options?

As much as one can attribute a new facility to increased recruiting success, what has also had an impact on Calvin's local success and lack of Hope's local (09) recruiting class is the recent departures of dutchman players, and playing time distribution of many underclassman the last two years (Krombeen and Bowser sometimes, are exceptions). Right or wrong, if you're a recruit and you see a highly touted player riding, and look in the program and see another play 60 minutes in a season, that cannot be real appealing, especially with kids on JV who will move up too.

I personally know 2 WM coaches who openly tried to deter their players from going to Holland, and WOTS was that KVD was encouraged to turn the other way by "influencing"  people.  This I CANNOT confirm but was told by a Zeeland administrator.

Unfortunately for Calvin fans and program, you cannot keep everone happy and will see similiar backlash in a couple of years.

Korey to UNC must be devestating to Hope's staff.  I cannot imagine how long its been since they've recruited someone that hard.

Kudos to Calvin.  Now everyone can complain how overrated their prized classes are!!!!

The recruiting disparity between Calvin and Hope makes me wonder if Hope put all their eggs in one basket.  I don't know if any of us could really know Hope's recruiting strategy, but the results are interesting so far.

With all due respect to Hope, why would KVD go to Hope (or Calvin, or any DIII school) when he has a chance to go to a DI or even DII school and get a full ride scholarship?
