...6-10 Josh Tubergen is also coming back to Calvin for his last year of eligibility... :)

I'd love to see Josh Englesma back to use his last 2 years of elgibility.

LeBron James, acknowledging that the Cavs are predestined to win the NBA playoffs without a loss, has seen that Calvinism is the way to go, and has decided to use his 4 years of eligibility for the Knights.  An addition to the Van Noord has suddenly appeared in the Master Plan.   ;D ;D ;D

They're finally going to get on with it and cut down those trees........the addition can be found just outside the North exit.....next to the future 'rich dutchnamed donor' soccer stadium.........

A myth-busting question for the Calvin knowledgable: are any other buildings named after "rich dutchnamed donors"?  I believe all dorms are named after past presidents of the college, or similar positions.  There is the Prince Conference Center, of course.  Any others?

I believe the Men's residence hall 'Huizenga' is named after Wayne Huizenga of Waste Management, Blockbuster, and Miami Dolphins fame.

EDIT: Just looked it up, and it is not named for Wayne.  Lee Huizenga was a missionary and M.D. who served in China.  I guess that's what I get for relying on second hand information that's several years old.

Other than their surnames and the fact that each attended Calvin (though Wayne didn't graduate), the contrast between these two men could hardly be greater. Everyone knows that Wayne made bongo bucks in trash and has owned more than one major professional franchise. But with far less fanfare Lee became a medical missionary to China in 1920 where I believe he worked in a leprosy clinic. He served until being thrown into a prison camp by the Japanese during WW II and sadly died in that camp one month before the conflict ended. He never made much money so his reward came later. I don't object to naming buildings after major donors but I'm glad Calvin has reserved a portion of the campus (the residence halls) to be named after people who have done noble things with their lives, and have not been able to acquire naming rights with a monetary gift. CRC members of a couple of generations ago spoke of Lee Huizenga with great reverence. I've been told (but have never been able to verify) that one of Dr. Huizenga's granddaughters became an astronaut and has flown on the space shuttle.

H. Wayne lived in the apartment above my wife's grandmother's dry goods store in Chicago.

I have no known connection to the other Huizenga.

Just remembered, I think it was the neice of Wayne that was a student at Hope when I was there.........she was cute.

If I were a betting man, I'd wager she was Peter's daughter, which would make her a second cousin rather than a neice.  But, close enough for Dutch Bingo (we're all "cousins" here, especially the Frisians):  Enjoy your raw herring, crunchy rusk and dubbel zout licorice -- all washed down with an ice cold Grolsch.  Congratulations, sac.

Some of us are more cousins than others.

In another sign of heresy, I must confess I have no taste for raw herring (self-evident), beschuit (like eating a crunchy sponge), or especially Zoute Drop (salted tar). I think Heineken is skunky and undrinkable, but that it's still better than Grolsch. I do keep a bottle of Jenever in my freezer, however.

Speaking of Frisians...
Did any one elses parents or granparents put apples into jars full of sugar water, seal them up and put them in the basement until the turned a slight brown, then take them out and eat them??? that is my random question/thought of the day.

sac

My mom once made pumpkin pie without sugar.....does that count?

I've talked to some people at Adrian and the recruits have been showing up non stop at Adrian.  I'm hearing transfers are coming from all around to come back and play for Mark White.  It is pretty exciting to hear.  Also heard about a kid that played for White that was the top 250 players in the nation by rivals.com appears to be heading to Adrian.  I'm sure everyone will wonder how this is happening, like me?

sac

That all may be true........but rivals.com doesn't have a rivals 250 for basketball, they have a 150.  (nit picky I know) ;)

If a rumor I heard is true WM basketball junkies may want to keep June 26, and 27th open to get a fix in GR.

Anyone have any guesses on who will replace EE at Hope?  Eric will be hard to replace but he'll do a great job at Hudsonville, given some time to develop talent at the lower level.
