hope has   hired   tim  schoonveld   as  co athletic director with eva folkert  on hope web site

Tim's a great catch for Hope and the co-AD concept is an interesting twist.  Perhaps it's a harbinger.
Schoonveld should be a fixture for the next couple of decades or more in Holland.  Since he's a Calvin alumnus and the son of a CRC preacher, in addition to being a Hope grad, Tim will be a source of more light than heat for The Rivalry. 8)

I really wanted to only get in as a guest, to post an answer to a question that was raised, but I couldn't figure out how to do that, so I registered.

There was some discussion about Huizenga Hall at Calvin College, named for medical missionary, Dr. Lee S. Huizenga. He was my maternal grandmother's cousin, so I know a lot about him.

He was born in the Netherlands in 1881, and immigrated with his family in 1883. He graduated from Calvin in 1906, from Calvin Seminary in 1909, and a while later from medical school. In 1920 he went to China with his wife and four daughters, where he established a leprosy hospital and became a world authority on that disease.

In April, 1943, Dr. Lee S. and Mrs. Matilda Huizenga were placed in a Japanese concentration camp in Shanghai, with daughters Eunice (22) and Faith (14), and adopted Eurasian son, Philip (4). Daughter Myrtle (27), with her missionary husband, Oscar, daughter, Matilda Shannon (3 months), were already there. Dr. Huizenga died in July, 1945.

Dr. Matilda Shannon Lucid, Dr. Huizenga's granddaughter, is an American astronaut. She was the narrator and an active participant in the Imax movie, Mission to Mir.

[Shannon's mother, Myrtle, was a student of my father in 1928-29, when he taught mathematics and science at Oakdale Christian School in Grand Rapids for a year before going on to medical school.]

[Another residence hall at Calvin, Van Dellen Hall, was named for Rev. Idzerd Van Dellen. We have no common ancestor since his ancestor and mine each took the surname Van Dellen.]

Ken Van Dellen

Shannon Lucid! That's who was the Lee Huizenga astronaut descendant. Thanks for your report and welcome to the board. As this link reports,

http://www.nasa.gov/vision/space/features/shannon_lucid.html

Shannon was born in Shanghai and her parents and grandparents were all imprisoned by the Japanese in 1943. Shannon and her parents were freed in 1944 as part of an exchange but Dr. Huizenga remained in the camp and died in July, 1945. I don't know if the good doctor volunteered to stay to help others--maybe kenvandellen does. Other than having Lee Huizenga survive the war the only thing that would make this story better would be a report that one of his descendants played hoops for the Knights.

Speaking of hoops, there are a couple of changes to report on the incoming class at Calvin. Sac has does a nice job of organizing the known MIAA commitments to date but he can make one subtraction and one addition to the Calvin list of incoming players. Apparently Bryan Huntley has found the tuition difference between Calvin and GVSU to be more a more daunting task than he wants to undertake. Huntley will not transfer and will remain a Laker.

On the positive side of the ledger, Calvin reportedly will see a hoopster from Eastern Christian High School (North Haledon, NJ) come to town this September by the name of Nathan Van Eck. It's been a very long time since Calvin has had a northern New Jersey B-ball player suit up on Calvin's varsity but apparently this kid has potential. The last Eastern Christian kid I can remember on varsity was Tom Cooper who played in the late 70's, and before him was Del Willink. Both of those guys were good players, especially Willink, who was similar to Danny Rodts in many respects.

I've gotten reports that Van Eck is anywhere from 6'5" to 6'7" and that he has a big body, weighing in at 230. He was a first team All-Conference player and honorable mention All-Passaic County. I believe that Passaic is better known for producing football players (when Hayden Fry patroled the sidelines of Kinnick Stadium he regularly mined prep gridiron talent from that area of the Garden State), but the county's  population is around 500,000 so an honorable mention there might be worth something. Maybe an East Coast visitor to this board knows more about the young man.

Good to see the Knights adding some inside size and bulk, with Meckes, DeYoung, and now VanEck.

Olivet opens the MIAA season with 3 very difficult games:

Albion
@Calvin
@Hope

They also play a very challenging non league schedule with games @ Saginaw Valley,
@ Grand Valley, @ Wittenberg tournament and home to Aquinas.

sac

I don't think there's another MIAA team thats played as many D2's as Olivet has over the last decade.   Alma's probably up there in the count.  Here's Olivet's D2 opponents.

2001  Hillsdale, Ashland, Northwood
2002  Ferris State, Hillsdale
2003  Ferris State
2005  Lake Superior State, Wayne State
2006  Saginaw Valley State
2007  Saginaw Valley State
2009  Ferris State, Northwood

Thats 12 with 2 more next season.  Olivet's schedules's are sneaky, among some of their opponents the last few seasons have been Buena Vista, UW-Whitewater, Elmhurst and Wittenberg among other at least decent D3 programs.  Should they meet Witt this winter, that will make 3 times in 6 years.  They simply haven't won enough of those games to notice.

I don't know what Olivet's connection with Wittenberg is but between football and basketball they've met several times in recent years.

The following is the offical announcement of the games I alluded too about 10 days ago:

"Calvin College will play host to a boys high school basketball team camp -the
Calvin Knights Shootout later this month. The three-day team camp, which will
include a team tournament will take place June 25, 26 and 27 and will involve
12 high school varsity boys basketball teams - seven from the state of Michigan
and five from outside the state.
Teams scheduled to participate in the camp include Denver Christian (CO),
Central Wisconsin Christian, Sheboygan County Christian (WI), Hull Western
Christian (IA), Illiana Christian (IL), Hudsonville Unity Christian, Grand
Rapids South Christian, Grand Rapids Christian, Holland Christian, Grand Rapids
Covenant Christian, Wyoming Tri-unity Christian and Northern Michigan McBain
Christian.

The camp will begin in the evening on Thursday, June 25 and will conclude in
the afternoon on Saturday, June 27. Games will be played inside the Van Noord
Arena and inside the Hoogenboom Health and Recreation Center on Calvin's
campus.

The public is welcome to attend. There will be an admission charge for each
day of the camp for spectators."

Word I got was KVS filled all the slots in less than 2 hours, and KCHS, and CalvinCH called in too late.

Sounds like this camp could be a great recruiting tool and a nice opportunity for KVS and the Knights to show off the new digs.

This is about 6 weeks old:

http://www.cantonrep.com/archive/x303479233/Malone-hires-Tim-Walker-as-mens-basketball-coach

His replacement is:

http://athletics.trnty.edu/index.php/News/Lubbers-Named-Head-Mens-Basketball-Coach.html

I have a special interest in this piece of information as I taught at Malone for 10 years. Hal Smith had been the basketball coach there for a long, long time. I think Walker will find that the Malone/Walsh rivalry is not quite at the level of the Hope/Calvin one. He'll also have to get a lesson in all the dead spots on Osborne Hall's floor.

Art Tuls Sr, H.S. Basketball coach at Holland Christian for many years, has died. He was 85.  He had some great teams in the 50's, 60's and early 70's.  His son, Art Jr, was an excellent player at Calvin in the early 70's.  He came back for a couple years in the 80's.

Old Knight may have played against his teams when he was in H.S.

In 1970(?) Holland Chr. played Muskegon Hts in a regional tournament game at the Calvin fieldhouse.  My parents shoved me through the door past the ticket taker to get me in.  They only had 2 tickets and I wanted to go.  It was standing room only.  I remember Dick Frens was a very good player on that team. I can't recall if Art Jr. was on that team or had graduated the year before.

I also seem to remember him matching up with Lofton Greene and some of the great River Rouge teams of the 60's.
