Not to mention the 1984 series that should have been.

Sigh...

25 year anniversary this year...........on this date in 1984 the Tigers were 51-18......they would win just 6 more games between now and the All-Star break on July 8

After the amazing 35-5 start, I thought they coasted the who rest of the season.  I was quite worried that would come back to haunt them in the post-season.

Thats kind of true........I mentioned the limp into the all-star break, what few remember is that after losing the first game following the break the Tigers rolled of 11 wins in 12 games.

I think I have the book 'Bless You Boys' laying around somewhere.....might be an interesting walk down memory lane.

In other weird news, the remaining upper deck of Tiger Stadium collapsed yesterday,  on its own.....

Ryan Raburn kills the Cubbies with a 2 run walk-off shot in the 9th!  Too bad for Edwin Jackson tonight.  He was good again but ends up with another ND.

The evil empire isn't so evil this year.  Sox lead by 4 games and have taken them 8 out of 8 from them this year!

For anyone interested in basketball,  ;) :D, the Cubs beat the Tigers, er, um, I mean Hope defeated Calvin by about 10 points Monday night at the Civic.  Close game throughout; tied at 28 at half-time; low scoring game with more defense than is typical for a summer league game.  Should be an interesting season...

I'm not so good with details after the fact (many apologies for that).  Calvin had what I would consider the core of their team there, but when Mantel was not on the floor they struggled.  Schuster (sp?) played, but mostly stayed outside and attempted 3's.  Salo played well.  Tommy Snikkers also played, but didn't show much on this particular night (he did not play poorly; just didn't have a lot of opportunities).

Hope was missing a few players, including Krombeen, but there was a lot to be happy about.  Nelis played well and Logan Neil will be a great asset.  Bowser scored 25-30 points and seems to be a man on a mission.  Lots of good ball movement by the Dutchmen.   Jared Mysliewiec played as well, but not much to note yet.

It was about 100 degrees inside, which led to a sweaty, slippery basketball.

I'm sure I'm forgetting much, so apologies all around.  ???   It was just good to see some basketball.

Being down here in St Louis, during the off season, I often wonder about the Holland Blast  -   how have they done this year?  do they draw very well?   Are the players community friendly?  Who on the team has Hope connections or MIAA connections?  Seems to me that if I was still in Holland, it would have been a welcome diversion to watch some hoops along with the college summer league....
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Knight In The Stan

Basketball is available tonight, Friday and Saturday morning at the Van Noord Arena with AC.

The Blast has been doing well this year, and has several Hope connections, including Duane Bosma (player/coach), Patrick Woolpert (who's been playing really well) and Jesse Reimink.  Heard that other Hope players have practiced with them, but we haven't been to a Blast game in a few weeks, so I'm not sure if others are now playing with them or not.

Do they draw well?  Not particularly.  I'd take a rough guess and say there are about 150-200 people there (keep in mind I'm bad at estimating crowds).  They do seem to be involved with the community in positive ways, and are happy to banter back and forth with the fans during play.

For me it's harder to watch than college hoops.  I'd rather see a tough defensive battle, but with a 22 (?) second shot clock, mostly you're getting run-and-gun, which, I suppose, for the average fan is a lot of fun.  That being said, I have noticed that the Blast have/has picked up their defensive game a bit, which is great.

The best way to enjoy a Blast game is to go with a group of friends who like to have a good time and aren't afraid to get boisterous.  I'm not naming names, though.   ;D

The highlight of most of the games are the refs...darn funny boys, they are.  Right, Sac?   :o 8) :D

Some Blast trivia:

They've only lost 2 games this season

They've never scored less than 100 points in any game, including the losses

They won their most recent game 164-154

They play this Friday (June 26) at the Civic at 7:15.

Might be time to catch another game...
