For anyone interested in basketball,  , the Cubs beat the Tigers, er, um, I mean Hope defeated Calvin by about 10 points Monday night at the Civic.  Close game throughout; tied at 28 at half-time; low scoring game with more defense than is typical for a summer league game.  Should be an interesting season...

Only in a parallel universe!

I will root for the Cubbies to finish the season on a 97-game winning streak , but I couldn't let the Tigers sweep pass totally unmentioned.

Not that I would gloat or anything.

Anyone note Magglio's 'reverse-Samson'?  Since he cut his locks (to be auctioned off on e-bay for charity), he has gone 3 for 8, including his first HR in 40 games!

I'm embarassed to admit I swore (apparently soon-forgotten) loyalty to the Rockies when they voted a full series share to the family of minor league coach, Mike Coolbaugh, killed by a foul ball.  If I remember correctly, he'd only been in the organization a few weeks when he died - surely one of the more classy moves a baseball club ever made.

OK, Cubs and Rockies are my TWO favorite NL teams - hope to see one of you in the WS!

I think Tim wore a different Michigan college sweatshirt in every episode.  I think there might even be an episode with a (gasp) Hope College sweatshirt. Not sure if i've seen Olivet College though.

The following is the offical announcement of the games I alluded too about 10 days ago: 

"Calvin College will play host to a boys high school basketball team camp -the
Calvin Knights Shootout later this month. The three-day team camp, which will
include a team tournament will take place June 25, 26 and 27 and will involve
12 high school varsity boys basketball teams - seven from the state of Michigan
and five from outside the state.
Teams scheduled to participate in the camp include Denver Christian (CO),
Central Wisconsin Christian, Sheboygan County Christian (WI), Hull Western
Christian (IA), Illiana Christian (IL), Hudsonville Unity Christian, Grand
Rapids South Christian, Grand Rapids Christian, Holland Christian, Grand Rapids
Covenant Christian, Wyoming Tri-unity Christian and Northern Michigan McBain
Christian.

The camp will begin in the evening on Thursday, June 25 and will conclude in
the afternoon on Saturday, June 27. Games will be played inside the Van Noord
Arena and inside the Hoogenboom Health and Recreation Center on Calvin's
campus.

The public is welcome to attend. There will be an admission charge for each
day of the camp for spectators."

Word I got was KVS filled all the slots in less than 2 hours, and KCHS, and CalvinCH called in too late.

Oh, my - it's only the Royals, but ...

Rookie Lucas French out dueled Cy Young frontrunner Zack Greinke, 3-1, for his first MLB win.  The bullpen (Ni, Lyon, and Rodney) came through with 2.2 hitless innings, striking out 7 of the 9 batters they faced.

I do believe we'll hit the all-star break in first place.

I have been pleasantly surprised with French in his two starts.  Then again, anything over Willis right now is an upgrade.

And for you Cub fans out there, I feel your pain.  A broken toe trying to celebrate a game winning hit and then someone else gets hurt in batting practice.  I don't think this is the year.

In basketball news, ran into Greg Immink a while back and he seems to be doing well.  He just had surgery for a sports hernia but is hoping to be playing soon and return to Slovakia next season.  Always good to meet up with these former players.

We should see Detroit be a least in contention, if not still in first place, when the kids go back to school.

I like how the schedules work out. Baseball takes us up to October and ends when DIII basketball talk starts heating up. DIII basketball, in turn, takes us through to March, which is when MLB starts heating up.

It really can't get any better for me, but I don't think my wife is thrilled.

Don't get me wrong, I like football. I like football a lot, it just doesn't compare to the Detroit Tigers and Calvin Knights Basketball in my book. (Don't ask me to choose between the two because I won't do it, and thanks to the schedules, i'll never have to)
