Oh, my - it's only the Royals, but ... :o

Rookie Lucas French out dueled Cy Young frontrunner Zack Greinke, 3-1, for his first MLB win.  The bullpen (Ni, Lyon, and Rodney) came through with 2.2 hitless innings, striking out 7 of the 9 batters they faced.

I do believe we'll hit the all-star break in first place. :)

[My fingers are crossed that we can do the same for October! ;)]

If French can give solid starts it would be a huge boost for the Tigers. With Verlander and Jackson dealing like they are, he won't be required to go deep into games.  Just go out there and throw 5 or 6 innnigs and keep the team in the game. We should see Detroit be a least in contention, if not still in first place, when the kids go back to school.

I like how the schedules work out. Baseball takes us up to October and ends when DIII basketball talk starts heating up. DIII basketball, in turn, takes us through to March, which is when MLB starts heating up.

It really can't get any better for me, but I don't think my wife is thrilled.

If you weren't a Knight, you might remember that another neat season overlaps them both! ;)

Agreed. Soccer is also fun to watch.

Don't know whether you're serious or sarcastic (personally, I coached and played soccer for years and love it, but know there are many soccer 'heathens' out there ;)). but left out a number of faves - no hockey either.

Just couldn't resist a Calvin guy omitting football from the calendar! ;D

Don't get me wrong, I like football. I like football a lot, it just doesn't compare to the Detroit Tigers and Calvin Knights Basketball in my book. (Don't ask me to choose between the two because I won't do it, and thanks to the schedules, i'll never have to)

1a. Detroit Tigers, 1b. Calvin Knights BBall, 2. UM Football, 3. Detroit Lions, 4. Detroit Pistons, 5. UM Basketball, 6. Detroit Red Wings, 7. Manchester City FC

Gotcha.

My list would be:

1. Whatever team from IWU is currently playing.  2. UM football.  3. UM other.  4. USA men's or women's soccer team (whichever is playing).  5. Tigers/Wings/Pistons (depends on the season - Lions will have to cease being a total joke to join the list).  14. EMU teams (I taught there for 32 years, but had a rather messy split-up).

Notice I did not list an MIAA team - I'm not suicidal! ;D  While I, of course, rooted for IWU when I attended the fb game at Hope, I've otherwise usually rooted for Hope simply because I was sitting with Hope fans!  If I ever met any posters from elsewhere ...!  (My natural inclination, having been raised a Methodist and them being the closest school, would probably be Adrian, but I've so far never met any posters except 5 from Hope.)

Some Adrian news from insideprepsports.com.  TJ is an accurate reporter and his stuff is usually solid.

"You don't see a lot of D3 schools attend major national events because many of the players are beyond their recruiting but two were in Cincy. Adrian (MI.) and Notre Dame College (OH.) were there.

Adrian also has a stellar class coming in Delano Collins, Ray Reed, Blair Ramsey, Anthony Strickland, Cody Barnes, Sean Gallant, Tyler Sarter, and college transfers Joe Kopecki, Javon Mosley, and Delano big brother Mike."

sac

Adrian's recruit back ground

Delano Collins 6-0  PG Detroit Rennaisance, Stephen Bell's #7 Point Gaurd

Raymond Reed 6-9 C New Boston Huron, Stephen Bell's #9 Center
~~perhaps his 15 mins of fame....  http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/scorecard/faces/2009/04/13/

Sean Gallant 6-6 F Jackson Lumen Christi, Stephen Bell's #34 Forward

Blair Ramsey 6-0 PG  Univ Detroit-Jesuit,

Anthony Strickland,      Willow Run

Cody Barnes 6-0 PG, Romulus

Tyler Sarter 5-11 G, West Bloomfield     (stats http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/uykTZVZjVkSsWxyrbPzDug/west-bloomfield-lakers/basketball/stats.htm )

Transfers
Joe Kopecki  from Wayne State University......6-0 G, Warren Fitzgerald
bio from WSU  http://wsuathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/kopicki_jay00.html

Jevon Mosley from Northwood University/Kzoo CC........6-3 Warren Lincoln.....does not appear to have played for Northwood in 09 or 08

Michael Collins  ~ can't find anything other than he played for Coach White at Rennaisance

Delano Collins was also a good football player as a CB/WR and at one time was considering a couple D1 schools.   http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=58837&season=2009&action=login&appRedirect=http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/tracker/player%3frecruitId%3d58837%26season%3d2009

......just for reference Collins was Stephen Bell's #7 PG, the #8 PG went to Lake Forest.

If the format for my last post is all screwy for you to, I'm sorry........I don't know why

i love hope  sports all of them are really great to watch

Mr. Ypsi

I think Leyland is getting really fed up with walks.  Zumaya started the eighth, and was pulled after TWO pitches (both balls - must have been doozies! ;)).  Jackson went 7, gave up only 4 hits, 2 BBs, and 1 run; Zumaya, Seay, and Rodney combined for two innings, no hits or runs, but FOUR walks.  Tigers won 5-1.

Kevin Rand went out to the mound with JL and the TV guys said Zoomer has been battling a small cut on his throwing hand that re-opened.

Good to get E-JACK a win finally. Thats six straight wins over the stinkin' Indians.

Thanks for the clarification - obviously I didn't watch the game, and only went by reports.

I've long had hopes that 'zoom-zoom' would be a dominant closer for the Tigers for a decade.  Doubts are beginning to creep in.

With the Twinks beating the Sox, the Tigers open a 3.5 game lead.

Mr. Ypsi

Gotta love that the Tiges enter the break up 3.5 and 4 games on their main rivals, after obliterating the Tribe 10-1 (Verlander went 7 shutout innings, Inge had 2 HRs, Thomas had 5 RBIs). :)

I admit to being only very cautiously optimistic that the Tiges can maintain a lead to the end.  But if they do, I don't think anyone will be eager to face a team with Verlander, Jackson, and Porcello/Gallaraga/French/whoever as a pitching trio - that sort of combo can win any series, whatever their off-again, on-again hitting may do. ;)

And go Cubs!  They whupped the Cards in the day game, but trail 2-1 in the nightcap.

I had noticed a few weeks ago that Calvin's conference schedule has them at home for 6 of 7 Saturday games.  Calvin's only Wednesday home game is against Hope. It just occurred to me to check to see how other schedules come out and it appears that the Dutchmen also get 6 of 7 on Saturday, the only exception being a trip to Olivet.

Albion is at home twice on Saturday, Kzoo is at home thrice on Saturday, Alma is at home twice on Saturday, Adrian will not play a Saturday home game, Trine three times on Saturday. Only Olivet has more Saturday games at home, they have five.

Is this just how the schedule came out?
Does this give Calvin and Hope an academic advantage?
Maybe the MIAA feels that Calvin and Hope travel "too well" on Saturdays and that the home team loses an advantage?
Maybe the MIAA is looking for Calvin and Hope to lead the NCAA III in attendance?
Maybe I am speculating too much?

Does it really matter?

I am guessing this happens all the time, I just haven't noticed it.

KS -- I noticed this as well, but from a different perspective.  Hope has one Wednesday home game, with the rest on the road.  I typically attend every game, and have to make work schedule adjustments to attend Wednesday night games, so this little finding was not overly welcome news.

Based on previous year's experience, it's not usually this lopsided, although last year was closer to lopsided than others I remember.  Not sure if it's just the cycle of things, or if there are deep dark ulterior motives.  Seems having to travel on nearly every Wednesday would be at least slightly detrimental to one's academia...

I saw in the recent issue of The Banner, that Aaron Winkle has been approved as a candidate for the Ministry.  Congratulations to him!

Congrats are also in order to Kevin (KC) VandeStreek (son of Calvin's coach) on the approval of his candidacy. 8)
