Sign of the Apocalypse (British Open category):

Tiger Woods missed the cut.

The co-leaders are 59-year-old Tom Watson and the second alternate to even make the field.

I saw in the recent issue of The Banner, that Aaron Winkle has been approved as a candidate for the Ministry.  Congratulations to him!

Congrats are also in order to Kevin (KC) VandeStreek (son of Calvin's coach) on the approval of his candidacy. 8)

What is "the Ministry"?  Is it some secret sect like The Family on C Street in DC? Is it seminary? Please explain for non-CRC' ers

Speaking of KVS, saw him at the movies in A2 yesterday evening.

Congrats to Sam Hargraves.  Good guy.

The Ministry to CRC people is when sem students go through sem school and then are voted upon by a consistry of some kind on wether or not they are qualified(minister) to a CRC church or any church for that matter. Not so much a secret organiztion like the illusive "Illuminati."

The traditional route to be an approved candidate for ministry in the CRC, requires satisfactory seminary training (usually at Calvin Seminary) followed by approval from the denomination's Synod typically held in June of each year. Now that both Winkle and VandeStreek are approved "candidates" they are eligible to be called as a pastor at any CRC church. They are also eligible for other types of pastoral work including chaplaincy and missions.

IF the Tigers miss the postseason by a game or two, remember this weekend. :(

With the sole exception of Zumaya (who may have an excuse, since he is now on the DL), they got true all-star pitching.  Rookie rookie French (Porcello is a rookie; French is a rookie rookie ;)) left after 5, leading 3-2.  Verlander and Jackson each gave up only 2 runs in 7 innings.  Except for Zumaya's 3-run HR, Ni, Miner, Seay, and Lyon each pitched a shutout inning.  Result?  The Tigers are swept as the bats fall ominously silent.  If you hold a lineup like the Yankees to 9 runs in 3 games, you gotta win at least one! :o

Thank you for the explanation Knight and OK.

Jeez, how many great pitching performances can the Tigers get away with wasting? >:(

Galarraga gave up ONE HIT in 7.1 innings, and the Tigers lose 2-1. :(  Fortunately the Twinks (the team I fear the most) were crushed by the A's, 16-1, but the Sox are leading 4-3 in the 8th.

Too many squandered opportunities...the offense is in the deep freeze!

R.I.P., Ann Arbor News, 1835 - Aug. 23, 2009. :( :'(

In recent years it had slid from a good (never great, but usually good) newspaper into more of a newsletter.  Although I read everything that even remotely interested me, some days it had become a ten-minute read.  Nonetheless, I'll miss it, and it will blow a hole in my afternoon rituals.

Online is just not the same to me as an actual paper.  With the Freep having already gone to 3-days-a-week, my Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are looking diminished. :(

Mr. Ypsi

The Tigers seem determined to reel me in! :D  Just when I'm getting discouraged and ready to ignore them for a while, they sweep the red-hot Sox in a DH to go back up by 2.

Verlander pitched yet another gem, yielding only an unearned run in a complete game 5-1 victory.  (If you could erase April, he'd be a near-lock for the Cy Young.)  Bonine was quite creditable in his starting debut, giving up 3 runs in 6 innings; Seay, Lyon, and Rodney then pitched a shutout inning each, combining for ONE hit and 5 Ks - good guys win 4-3.

Mr. Ypsi

Jackson could still sue for lack of support, but the offense finally came through late.  Jackson pitched 7 innings, but left trailing 3-2.  The bats came through just in time, with 3 hits, one run in the bottom of the 9th to tie; again 3 hits, one run in the 10th to win, 4-3.

After looking like they were in full collapse only 36 hours ago, the Tigers are suddenly 3 up on the Sox, 5 on the Twinks! ;)

Still a long way to go, but I'm back to cautiously optimistic.  I can't imagine they can consistently maintain the pitching excellence they've had lately (much of it wasted in 2-1 losses), so here's hoping the offense will start doing their share.

BTW, the Cubbies won, Cards lost - only .5 games back! :D

Mr. Y,

Are you a closet Cubs fan on the side?  I voted for the Cubs on the poll at the top as they are my first love when it comes to baseball, but I am also an Indians fan as well due to my proximity to the Land.  Being an Indians fan, I don't generally pull for the Tigres, but given their battle with the ChiSox, I have no problem cheering on the D to beat out the southsiders! ;D

As far as the Cubs go, I am very hopeful that they will pull out yet another NL Central title.  Being only 1/2 game back after their HORRIBLE first half of the season is very promissing and has to leave the Cards in some sort of disbelief.  If the Cubs can start to finally get healthy, I really don't see why they can't run away with this division as so many predicted at the start of the season...

I don't follow the "Senior Circuit" much, but, yeah, the Cubs would be my favorite (with the possible exception of the Rockies - their voting a full WS share to the family of minor-league coach [in the organization only a few weeks] Mike Coolbaugh after he was killed by a line drive was one of the classiest gestures any team has ever made).

Besides, with the Cubs getting 9 votes, I know how to suck up to posters! ;D

I am a Cubs fan and I played college basketball, but my favorite team is Cavlin SOCCER!!! Go knights ;D
