any word on freshmen/transfers enrolled in MIAA?  Any word how long Bunn's injury will keep him out?

Just heard that he broke his arm, but will not affect the season. Also heard that Howenstein(sp?) is out for the season after re-injuring his knee during re-hab.

Department of Trivia - Attendance Division:

Hope averages more fans than attended today's MLB game of the Reds at the Pirates!  While paid attendance was nearly 16,000, turnstile attendance was under 3,000 (they even closed the upper deck for the first time since the park opened in 2001).

From the sounds of things, the G20 goofball protesters pretty much shut down the downtown area of Pittsburgh, thus keeping fans away.  Teargas does not go well with your hotdog and beer..........in related news Sidney Crosby still sucks, even if he has a cup.

Yeah, I knew it was more the G20 than the fact that the Pirates are actually below the Nats and Indians on the SI power rankings!  I still found it rather startling. :D

Especially that over 80% of those who had already paid didn't show up! :o

Spent some time on the campus the other day.  Not much news on the bball scene at this time.  From the people I spoke with it didn't seem like there was any big news, and reading between the lines it seems most of the anticipated players are on campus.
The one comment that kept coming up was the players having more time to become familiar with the new digs, but that is really old news.

Anyone know what the date of "Midnight Madness" is this year?

This is way off track, but the Saturday Grand Rapids Press ran an article in the religion section which said that Darwinian evolution is taught at pretty much all local colleges, including Calvin.  Calvin biology profs do not teach the 6 day creation account in Genesis 1, and in fact try to "sensitively" persuade Calvin biology students that the literal version of Genesis 1 which they have been taught at home and in their Christian schools is wrong. Some Calvin profs even say students can't be "real scientists" unless they believe in evolution. Is this story accurate?

As usual for questions like this, the answer needs a bit of nuance. The two categories described above ("believe in evolution" vs. "6 day creation account of Genesis 1") aren't enough to cover the full spectrum of beliefs. I'd bet that none of the Calvin profs (or Hope, or Cornerstone, or Wheaton, etc) fully subscribe to either of those options.

There probably aren't any science profs at such places that believe in the completely unguided Darwinian evolution that you seem to be speaking of, and none probably believe that the evidence indicates that the world is only 6,000 years old, with creation taking six literal 24-hour days. Of course, all would acknowledge that God could have created the world 6,000 years (or 5 minutes) ago with every indication that it is billions of years old. And all no doubt acknowledge that some sort of evolution takes place -- that species change over time at least a little -- because that's been seen happening. At least if the world is more than 5 minutes old.

And, I think, every thinking scientist would have to acknowledge that the Calvin men's BB team has two national championships compared to -- well -- to Wheaton's zero.

Just take a stroll through the Hope campus and you'll see tons of them. The more advanced life forms all attend Calvin.  ;D :D ;) :)

For those of you familiar with Calvin's Spark Alumni magazine, this sounds likes a good question for the Ask Anonymous section written  by Anonymous Bosch .

I'll chime in here as I'm likely the most recent graduate of one of these institutions (Calvin '08 for those of you who must know). Dark Knight really explained it well, better than I will anyway.

I had one Biology class at Calvin (and I married a Calvin Biology Major) and the science that is taught at Calvin is that of "Darwinian" evolution. They don't discout God in any way, but they teach the science (through observation, and experimentation) behind Darwin's theories, and they teach why these ideas are the current views of the scientific community. Six day creation is not taught in Calvin science classes.

FWIW, The geology classes I took approached the world from an "old earth" (~4.5 billion years old) perspective, and I had a religion professor who aslo tried to "'sensitively' persuade Calvin students that the literal version of Genesis 1 which they have been taught at home and in their Christian schools is wrong."

To me, Calvin (and it's professors) did a good job of laying out what the leading secular scientists (or historians, scholars, etc) say, what the Bible seems to say, and how a Christian might or might not reconcile the two ideas.
