GK:  B. Schuster actually disappeared from the scene after playing 70 minutes in 11 games in the 07-08 season.  The lay off since early Jan. of 08 would impact most people's game.  Perhaps the pleasure KVS has is imagining how other coaches will deal with him and Mantel on the floor at the same time along with Rodts or Veltema, and a pg to feed them the ball inside.

If other coaches have to worry about Schuster inside, he must have changed his game.  I seem to remember him being much more of a perimiter guy, despite his size.

FDF's memory is keen, indeed.  Schuster is a reed-thin 6-10 and has never been a banger down low.  His game is out around the 3-point line, although with his long arms he can tip in a few missed shots.

The key words are "feed the ball inside".  6'10" on the perimeter is not my idea of the best use of the height.  KVS has Mantel to do the banging, and he is more than most teams will be able to match.    I doubt many MIAA teams are going to double Mantel if they have another player at the height on the floor.  Much depends on how the rotations work out.

Speaking of "feed the ball inside".......I notice Andy Venema is listed as a Forward on the Hope roster, this despite being the tallest player on the team in the program.

Perhaps the Hope coaches have finally given up on Andy as a center?  We all know his ummm....tendency to wander to the perimeter.

This leaves Hope with 6-4 Nelis, 6-7 Fr. Holwerda and 6-6 first year varsity Dickerson as the C's.  I've never thought of Nelis as a center myself.

Playing around with starting lineups, I wonder if Hope might go

C- Nelis
F - Bowser
F - Bunn
G - Tanis
G - Krombeen

or

C-Nelis
F-Venema
F-Bowser
G-Bunn
G-Krombeen

or

Maybe the position designations mean nothing, but I would think you start your upperclassmen listed C (also Captain)

I could also see

C-Venema
F-Bowser
F-Bunn
G-Tanis
G-Krombeen

Bunn, Krombeen and Bowser seem like the only set starters.  With a little more height on the team this year (height used loosely) maybe Bunn plays the 2 more often.

A note of interest (from the Holland Sentinel):

Hope president named vice-chair: Hope College President James E. Bultman has been elected vice chair of the Division III Presidents Council of the NCAA on Thursday at a Presidents Council meeting in Indianapolis.

The Presidents Council directs the general policies of Division III and is responsible for establishing a strategic plan for Division III, which has 420 member institutions, the largest of any of the NCAA's divisions.

Here is my starting line up predictions for Calvin this year:

Trent Salo
Brad Schnyders
Matt Veltema
Danny Rodts
John Mantel

Offensively this will be tough to defend. On the defensive side you will be able to mix and match between the 2-4 who will guard the opposing 4 man.

Off the bench you would have:

Bryan Powell
Tommy Snikkers
Paul Campbell
Brent Schuster

In my opinion a real solid rotation from the bench will the difference this year in the MIAA. Guys like Matt Capel for Calvin will also play a significant role as I dont expect Schuster to be able to play more than 10-15 minutes a game. He has a Nate Burgess like mentality and toughness that you cant teach.

There are a lot of different match ups that Calvin could utilize against the right opponent. IE Shuster/Mantel or Powell/Veltema that could give a lot of team troubles. Hopefully Calvin will all "buy in" to KVS' defense and know their individual roles. Could be an exciting year.

I agree Calvin has some interesting potential lineup combinations.  Based on last years p.t. I am inclined to think we won't see much of Campbell, but will see De Young when Calvin needs the bulk.
Sac:  After watching 3 guard, and 1 guard 4 wings , etc. etc. etc. the last several years it is hard to define the exact position or role some of these teams are using. :)   I do notice that year after year the teams that rise to the top almost always have good inside play/players.

I think sac's second lineup is the one we're most likely to see. Nelis might not be a 5 on offense (he's really a power forward) but I can see him playing defense against many opponent's post, leaving Venema to guard an opposing team's weakest front court player.

I wouldn't sell Campbell short on PT too quickly. He's an excellent athlete with skills no one else on the roster has. He's anticipates well, is quick to the ball both laterally and vertically, interrupts passing lanes, and has a year in VandeStreek's system. With the departure of 3 frontcourt players who took up 52 of the 200 available minutes each game, I think Paul could easily get 15-20 minutes per game.

This Friday Nite puts the "New Look Bulldogs" @ University of Detroit in exhibition play.  Should be interesting to see how they respond to their first test as a young team with lots of collegiately inexperienced players.  Hopefully, they can show that they are meshing togather early.

Not a lot of new information that can't be gleaned from the roster, but Calvin's preview has been posted:
