Thoughts from the DeVos tonight

-  It was a typical first game of the season, with some ups and downs, ebb and flow, some good plays and some rusty ones.

- Nelis came out really hot, and was controlling the boards early.  I think he finished with 5 boards, and those were all in the first 3 mintues of the game.  He also scored Hope's first 6 points.

- Bowser was very agressive all night, and finished with a career high 24.  He has really stepped up his play from last year, on both ends of the floor.  I suspect he breaks that career mark again before this year is over.

- Bunn started slow, to be expected for a guy who just this week was finally able to practice fully and play, but he did finish well - with 11 points.

- All of the freshman impressed.  A few good minutes defensively from Holwerda, 2-3 from behind the line for Mysliwiec, and a full game of great effort from Snuggerud - 6 ponts and 8 boards in 29 minutes.

- Krombeen set a Devos record with 10 assists, and only 2 turnovers.  All around good game from him

All in all a good start to the season.  Unfortunate that its 11 days before they play again

The WHTC radio announcer stated that Krombeen's 10 assists was a DeVos Fieldhouse record.  He only had 2 turnovers.

I realize DeVos is a fairly new facility, but can 10 assists possibly be a fieldhouse record?! :o

With teams as balanced as Hope typically has, yes, it could possibly be.  Have I checked the record books yet tonight?  Nah.  :)  Sac?

The all-time Hope record is only 12.

The previous DeVos record was 8 held by Marcus VanderHeide of all people.

That did seem surprising that 10 is a record for the entire history of the arena. The 2 turnovers were also a good thing of course. I was curious how many turnovers Bowser had as he had a great offensive night, but also had some various dropped passes and turnovers mixed in. It was surprising to see him show some great jump shooting tonight, I remember his outside shooting being quite low percentage last year.

Hopefully he just lightly twisted his ankle at the end of the game? Neither Will nor Glenn looked overly concerned at the time.

Awesome start for Mysliwiec tonight as, if I'm not mistaken, his first 2 career shots were drained 3's.

I guess since Calvin showed off their cool introduction show last year, now they've decided to turn the lights out at the DeVos as well? Was I the only person who couldn't help but think: "at guard, from North Carolina, number 23...."?

Thank goodness for a new season to start, I'm trying to forget that there is a football game to watch com Saturday...

It seems the tradition for me every Saturday at this time of the year is to watch Michigan lose to Ohio St and then head over to Calvin to go watch the second half of the tip-off tournament championship game, usually in a pissy and depressed mood.  Hoping that can change for once but things don't look like that will happen.

So they turn off all the lights for the introduction show at DeVos now?  That has got to be really cool. Looking forward to seeing it next January....

Wasn't even that serious - just a cramp in his calf

Each starter played at least 29 minutes! That's a lot of minutes for a Hope's starting five to play historically in January/February yet alone the first game. No?

Historically true?  Based on my perception, yes.

I think the 29 minutes per starter was important.  Yes, we have 3 returning starters, but Peter really hasn't been able to practice until very recently.  IMHO it was important to have them get those minutes together in a real game situation, to help burn off the rust and get the machine working properly.

FDF:  The box shows Venema didn't play. How's his Achilles injury and is he expected back next week when Calvin hosts the HOF Tournament?

I'm not sure about his injury.  He was dressed and did warm up, but that's it.

I wasn't able to be at the game last night, but as I was driving home from work and listening to the game on the radio, it sounded like bowser was a monster last night. I know about his summer preparations for this year, but what he did was unexpected to me, nonetheless. I know he has the potential (I've thought that since the first few times I saw him running around the court his freshman year), but is it realistic to believe that he can put up games like this on a consistent basis throughout the season?

Maybe, but definitely not against Calvin   ;)

I would doubt he averages 24 ppg this year.  On the other hand, he'll probably do better than 5 rebounds, 0 assists, 6 turnovers.  Either way, from what I've seen from him last year and what we've read about his offseason work, I would expect that he will be a force in the MIAA.

Games like 24 points and 60% shooting? No

Games like double digit points and showing aggressiveness with the ball? Yes

Will's a good player, but a expecting a repeat of this performance every night whould be expecting too much. I hope his 3 point shooting didn't get too much better; I would like to see another year of 1-8 against Calvin from him. ;D
