DePauw 78 Albion 73...........pretty much double digit margin from 6 min left in the first half until under a minute to go in the game.......then it got a little crazy but the Tigers hold on for the W

Any insight into today's Calvin game from those who were there?

Whether I have insight I'll let others judge, but I do have opinions. There must be a complexity to Calvin's defensive system that I don't comprehend because it seems almost every year begins with some confusion in the Knights' defensive rotations that gives opposing players many easy shots. This year it seems the propensity is particularly true. Today's contest began with Calvin giving up numerous uncontested baskets and the Foresters scored 25 points in the first 10 minutes of the game. As the game progressed the effort improved and Lake Forest saw its shooting percentage drop from 61% in the first half to 43% in the second. Calvin went cold midway through the second stanza, going over 5 minutes without a field goal before Powell hit a huge triple to put the Knights up one. Veltema hit another and Calvin never trailed again. It's a long season and we'll see whether Calvin progresses. It's obvious that their defense is well behind the offense at this point and next week's HOF Classic is another measuring stick. Given this week's headshakingly odd comment by Kim Elders, I know what I would like to see happen with that stick.

Off the bball topic but a big Congratulations to Calvin's Men's soccer team on advancing to the NCAA Final Four in soccer with a shootout win this evening.

Any idea how that compares to last year this time?

Looks like a lot of the MIAA losses seem to be pretty close.

I only got to make Friday's game, but my biggest concern with Calvin is the players not moving their feet on defense.  Grace Bible would easily just drive right past us all the time.

Taking each teams same number of games, and using last years records.........at this time last year the league was 10-8.........this year 5-13, granted I do think this years slate of games has been slightly more difficult (mostly because of Albion's schedule)

........not very encouraging.

The league went 35-48 last year out of conference, and as I recall finished strong after Christmas just to get to 35 wins.

Knights play Cornerstone next. They'll have their work cut out for them, as Cornerstone hammered Grand Valley by 19 last Saturday.

I'm curious to know how well attended the games at Calvin were over the weekend.  The box scores for both games have it as 0.  I know it was nice out and all that...   ;D

I thought the Friday night game was pretty well attended.  Calvin's student section
was probably 90% full.  Grace had quite a few fans there also.  My estimate is 2200.

I did not attend Saturday's game.

I was at Friday's game, not Saturday.  I think that almcguire is spot on with his 2200 estimate.  Calvin students represented nicely, I was pleasantly surprised to see the student section almost completely full, and most wearing the maroon t-shirts, and had some flashes of energy but still a long way to go to match the coordination and passion of what I've seen from Hope students.  It was nice to see Grace Bible's student body pretty well represented as well.  Upper bowl fairly sparse.

We'll see how the crowd is for the Thanksgiving weekend tourney with the students mostly off campus.  Based on the quality of competition I am fearing an 0-2 weekend for the Knights.

Our NAIA neighbors had a nice Saturday, Cornerstone beat D2 GVSU and Aquinas beat D2 Lake Superior State 70-63.

I was just told there were very few Calvin fans for Saturday's game.

After a very nice Friday turnout (especially by students), the Saturday game was the most poorly attended Calvin men's home game I can remember. With it being a glorious November afternoon, a 1:00 pm start in a consolation game, and the Michigan/Ohio State game on TV, I was expecting a small turnout but I was still amazed to see an almost completely empty student section. A few came later but some were undoubtedly fans of Davenport and Grace--or maybe people who assumed Calvin played at 3 like they normally do.
