Yup.  Not much to say about the early game.

Looks like Hope-Calvin #1 of 2009-2010 coming up tomorrow.  10 turnovers in 16 minutes for Calvin is ensuring that.

Calvin was up 19 -10, and ends the half at 28 CU 38.  Between turnovers, poor 3 pt shooting, and terrible ft's it is amazing it is even that close.

Pretty awful when you have to watch the live stats and can't listen to the game. Live stats said Lane Waters made two free throws to make it 36-30 at halftime and then the computer refreshed and said 38-28 Cstone at half...

KII:  Trust me it is no better being able to hear the play by play. :)

Oh if I wanted to listen I could, but I would rather go back to the desert and get shot at. That man gets my blood boiling something fierce.

Aquinas 71 Hope 59.........I couldn't listen or follow along but Hope was never really in this one, down 12 at the half.  I believe Hope scored the final 15 points to make it halfway respectable.

Aquinas has now won 3 in a row vs Hope, and 4 of the last 5.

Interesting but useless fact -- Hope and Calvin's stats were nearly identical in several categories tonight, including final margin of win by the opposing team, turnovers, and shooting percentages.  The exception was in FT shooting, with Hope taking care of business from the stripe.  No idea at all what to expect tomorrow, besides an ulcer flare up.   :D

Here's some incentive, as if any team needed more incentive at a Hope/Calvin game.

THE LOSER BEGINS THE SEASON WITH A LOSING RECORD, AFTER THREE GAMES (HOPE) OR FOUR GAMES (CALVIN).

However, because it is so early in the season, I am not sure the outcome will tell us much.

Andy Venema did not play for Hope and was in street clothes, which obviously did not affect the outcome.  Is his foot still injured?  How serious is it?

After Calvin took a 19-10 lead and looked pretty good, Cornerstone turned the game around by forcing the Knights to play a 94 foot game rather than 47. Unfortunately for Calvin they had precisely the wrong package on the floor when CU went to the press. This change in strategy seemed to rattle Calvin's confidence, completely changed the momentum, and the Knights never got it back.  Even though Calvin made only 4 more turnovers for the game than their opponents, and outboarded CU by 5, the Golden Eagles were the aggressors much of the game. Other random thoughts:

1. Calvin won't show improvement and consistency until playing rotations are settled. The frequency of line changes was extraordinary and that's not conducive to harmonious play. It's difficult to find out what works best when players are going back to the bench every two minutes, and players' confidence suffers when they don't establish a rhythm.

2. Matt Kingshott gave a clinic on establishing position in the low post. He regularly set and held position right on the low block, the only player on either team to consistently do so. When a player receives the ball that close to the basket, post offense becomes much tougher to defend. That takes determination and I respect him for it. In the second half--after Calvin outworked his teammates on a series of offensive rebounds, Matt blistered the ear of another Cornerstone player (his brother, actually) for failing to block out. When your best player is also your hardest worker, teammates listen to and accept that kind of harsh correction. That's leadership.

3. Paul Campbell deserves playing time. He played 19 minutes and did several things well. He has good instincts, makes good decisions, and tracks down loose balls better than anyone on Calvin's team.

4. To my astonishment, Danny Rodts is in the process of playing himself out of a starting job. Danny was clearly outplayed by Tom Snikkers and the freshmen's minutes (22 tonight) will only go up if the current pattern continues. Snik looks better every game he plays.

5. If Veltema isn't hitting the 3-ball, Calvin is pathetic from the arc and that really hurts their offense. The Knights need to find another option.
