OK: you forgot to mention that Monica Lewinsky is a grad of Lewis and Clark.

It's failing to keep track of that kind of obscure information which makes me sad I changed my political science major after my freshmen year at Knollcrest.

hoopdreams

After tonight's weak showing by Hope and Calvin, Albion's coach had to be feeling good about how they match up against the two.  As did Alma, and davenport's coaching staffs, as well as any other programs in attendance.

I am already tiring of the "need for/importance of bowser, bunn and krombeen" line.  It is going to take a heck of a lot more than one of them or a combo of the 3, or all 3 in order for hope to be successful.  In inside presence?  Interior defense? Someone on offense to penetrate AND hit a cutter for an easy layup?  stopping dribble penetration?  taking a charge?  Vennema would have made no difference today.

Aquinas runs a clinic on dribble penetration, players cutting and making the pass.  Pick and roll? Pick and pop?  the most impressive part of Lierman's game tonight ( he could have scored 30+) was his passing.

Cornerstone's lump taking with youngsters the past 2 years is going to pay huge dividends this season and next

I will cut the MIAA'ers some slack because their season is just beginning as opposed to playing their 7th or 8th game, but their was a pretty clear separation in both games.

Can't make it to either game tomorrow...today and I'm not sure I want to check the papers or this site to find out the results.

5. If Veltema isn't hitting the 3-ball, Calvin is pathetic from the arc and that really hurts their offense. The Knights need to find another option.

Joel Hoekstra still has eligibility!!  :D

Cornerstone 77 Calvin 65

...this sets up the most meaningless Hope/Calvin game ever played at 6pm Saturday in the consolation game of the Hall of Fame Classic.

sac, this might end up being a pretty significant game (depends on how the season plays out).  We've discussed the limited number of in-region non-conference games Hope and Calvin play...and I promise, I'm not here to bring that up! :)  But, due to that fact, one extra in-region game could have a huge impact on Pool C implications come Selection Sunday.  As you know, Pool C decisions come down to 1 win (or 1 loss).

I honestly believe this game could have a big impact down the road.

Yes, dispiriting losses for both Hope and Calvin last night.  As I watched the Hope game I kept waiting for a comeback run.  But as John Wooden reportedly said, any team can be beaten badly on any cold shooting night by any other team that is shooting well.  I expect both teams to shoot better tonight.

Yes, Hope could use Andy Venema's size, rebounding, and defense-attracting presence in the post, to free up perimenter opportunities . . . but I gather his Achilles tendon is being rested until it's ready, possibly the league games in January.   In the meantime, Josh Holwerda looks like he will be making more and more of a contribution with his size and shooting touch, which could be a nice combo with Nate Snuggerud, who seems to have a bright future in a #4 position.

A history note.  In the 1995-1996 season, Hope suffered a much more humiliating 97 to 58 loss at Aquinas--before going all the way to its national championship game against Rowan.  As John Wooden said . . .

Calvin and Hope usually help each other out by way of high OWP numbers. The winner of this game good get a good boost on Pool C candidacy.

AQ and CStone are both good teams (both have beathen NCAA D2 teams) with veteran leaders, and they've both played several more games this season. It is after these types of losses where I have to remind myself that these games have no effect on the outcome of the season whatsoever. As far as the Knights are concerned they are 0-0 in region and 1-0 vs. D3. The Dutchmen still have a blank slate on both fronts.

In the second half--after Calvin outworked his teammates on a series of offensive rebounds, Matt blistered the ear of another Cornerstone player (his brother, actually) for failing to block out. When your best player is also your hardest worker, teammates listen to and accept that kind of harsh correction. That's leadership.

A few minutes later, a foul was called on Cornerstone's Caleb Simmons, who let everyone in the arena know that he wasn't happy with the call. Kingshott, who was just checking back in the game immediately told him to cool down and that he "didn't care what the call was."

173rd Hope v Calvin game

Hope leads all-time series 87-85, Hope has outscored Calvin by 98 points.

Last year Calvin won the two regular season games by 1 point and 2 points, Hope won the MIAA Tournament Championship over Calvin by 10

In games involving players on the floor tonight, Hope holds a 7-4 advantage over the last 3 season and have won 5 of the last 7 meetings.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really have no idea how this game will play out, we're coming off a season in which both Hope and Calvin had many players who had lots of Hope/Calvin game experience.  Tonight only 11 players will take the floor having played in this rivalry before. (really only 10 since Andy Venema will probably not play for Hope). Only 4 players have played in more than one year's worth of rivalry games  (Mantel, Veltema, Tanis and Bowser.)  Hope has no players from the 2007 meetings.

Calvin-28
Mantel -11
Veltema -11
Rodts -3
Salo -3

Hope- 23
Bowser -6
Tanis -6
Krombeen -3
Bunn -3
Jungling -3
Venema -3
Nelis -2

This early in the season I'm not sure either team is really sure what they have, and the rotations are certainly not set.  Bench play could be huge tonight, or rather whoever's bench produces best will probably win.

........exciting as always, Chris Nelis with a huge 3 following a game tying 3 by Calvin's Matt Veltema just under 2 minutes........Hope puts it away with 6-6  FT's in the 30 seconds. aw but wait......

.....and well then it got all Detroit/Boston Byrd stole the ball, mad scramble, 3 pointer goes in at the buzzer, no wait, timeout Calvin before the shot, so 1 sec left Calvin to inbounds........Rodts shot doesn't go in.  <shrug>

Bunn 19, Nelis 18, Krombeen 13, Bowser 9,
