it appears that Calvin did an outstanding job of guarding Steve Djurickovic [...] The number of games in which he's had a negative a:to ratio (he turned over the ball four times tonight) in his Carthage career can be counted on one hand.

Wow, that must have been quite something and  I'm sorry I missesd it. Did he have a negative number of turnovers or of assists?

Djurickovic had 4 turnovers and was limited to  2 assists. KVS has to be very happy about those numbers. I know I am.

I guess I'm too dry for my own good...  ;)

Don't be dry this holiday season. Try a glass of slivovitz or possibly Genever or maybe even some Boerenjongens.

Shutting down Steve. D was definitely big for Calvin.  It is hard for one person to carry a team for the entire 40 minutes, and as someone mentioned he made mistakes at the end.  Credit KVS with a good game plan, and hopefully we will see the Mantle from last night more often.
I expec t to see a different Wheaton team this afternoon, and Calvin had best not let their guard down.  Calvin should have the rebounding advantagee, but is going to have to watch the fouls.
One should expect to see an "energized" Carthage team against Hope.  If one of their young guys insdie can help take some of the scoring pressure off Steve D. it would make things interesting.

Based on a little research it seems Calvin's soccer team is playing the D3 soccer equivalent to Mount Union.  Messiah has never lost a D3 final, and has 7 or 8 banners in the last 10 years. :)

No offense, but it wasn't a very good joke. I said "ratio," and I indicated a ratio by putting a colon between the 'a' and the 'to'. Given that the antecedent (the first number in the ratio, which in this case is assists) is a desired outcome and the consequent (the second number, i.e., turnovers) is an undesired outcome, a player's a:to ratio is frequently described by basketball people as being either positive or negative. I'd be surprised if anyone who reads this board misunderstood me.

"Nothing against Carthage, but their frontcourt players are all freshmen," Mantel said. "I think the experience was to our advantage."

That sounds about right. Carthage's front three of Pierce, Guzman, and Thompson is very talented -- but all three are freshmen who are only seven games into their college careers. That makes the Red Men very vulnerable right now on the front line, especially against an experienced and talented big man such as John Mantel. I suspect that the Red Men will be more formidable down low in late January or into February, once that trio has settled in a bit.

I, for one, will be happy to reprimand you for mentioning soccer on this board. I mean really. I can see mentioning football or golf or even baseball. But soccer?!? Ugh. There's another board available for those few, those unhappy few, who actually want to discuss that "sport."

As regards a game that matters, the MIAA had a great night tonight. I am looking forward to tomorrow's games, to gauge exactly what to make of Hope's beatdown of the 6th ranked team, and whether a "light has gone on" for Calvin. Things are looking up.

Haha maybe you would be more willing to discuss it if it was Hope playing for the National Title...

Gotta love the fight after Andrew Jahns went unconscious to give Wheaton a seemingly comfortable lead

FINAL

Wheaton 74
Calvin 69

Both teams shot about 50%, and Calvin won handily on the boards, but the big difference in this one was three-point shooting, as Wheaton went 11-21 in the trey department.

Wheaton wins 74-69.  Mantel leads the way for Calvin again with 21 points.  Veltema with a quiet day...just 2 points.  Looks like Schuster was ineffective after last night's solid game, as he is held scoreless.  Ben Panner from Wheaton dominates Calvin with 29 points.  Andrew Jahns kills Calvin behind the arc by going 6 for 8 from the 3-point range.

And for you HopeConvert, I'll add Hope beats Calvin in hockey last night 4-2.

I followed your math and chuckled at that, but hadn't posted my appreciation.

Has the second game tipped yet? Yahoo audio is telling me it hasn't started, but I see that the final on the other game was already given at least 45 minutes ago.
