Carthage 73 Hope 73

Hope had 3 chances inside the final 3 minutes to take the lead, Carthage had 4 chances to put the game away before Raul Guzman's 3 just under 1 minute to play finally did so.......or at least appeared to until Peter Bunn knocked in a 3 with 21 seconds to go.  Hope fouled, Carthage missed the FT only to get the rebound and putback to go up 3.   Hope misses its first chance at 3, rebounds and Will Bowser knocks in a trey at the buzzer.

Bowser for 3! Going to OT at 73s. I'm wishing I'd gone to the game today now. Must be quite a back and forth looking at the stat lines:

Largest lead: 4 for Carthage, 5 for Hope

Sac, I hope you got to see it.  You always wanted to be on the right end of a wild buzzer beating 3 pointer.  Bowser did it today at the DeVos.

Carthage 83 Hope 77 OT

Bowser 26, Bunn 15, Nelis 14, Krombeen 12

Djurickovic 23, Pierce 20, Guzman 16

Carthage salts it away w/free throws in the final minute, lot of missed opportunities for Hope in the final 4 or 5 minutes of regulation and then overtime.

Not sure what to make of todays results.

Only the 6th loss for Hope in the 4 1/2  years at the DeVos.

Wild does not even begin to describe it! One hander, sky hookesque, fall away with a man in his face. banked in... Luckiest shot I have ever seen. It was certainly one of the craziest atmospheres after it somehow went in!

Sorry for saying this, but the refs were flat out awful!
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

During post-game interview, Carthage coach said (with tongue in cheek), "the officiating was outstanding."

Did anyone get video of the 3-pointer.  I am quite certain this will soon be referenced as the greatest 3-point shot in the history of basketball and I, for one, want to see it. ;)

Thoughts on the Calvin-Wheaton game:

-It looks like the Calvin defense has improved since last weekend.

-That being said they did not have answer for the Wheaton 3-point shooters (although that is largely because of the helpside system they run)

-It is tough for the Knights offensively when Veltema only puts up two shots, they need him to shoot more and open things up.

-Mantel continued to be dominate, when he gets the ball enough he is absolutely unstoppable.

-It seems to me that when Powell and Snikkers are in the game, Calvin plays at a different level.  Too often most of the Calvin players simply stand around passing the ball but when Powell and Snikkers go in the really seem to get things going, moving around, driving and dishing etc...

-Although I always knew this team would be fine, I feel better after this weekend now that they played a little.

-Wheaton has a solid team (I don't think quite top ten) but they can really hit the three, it was a big difference from yesterdy which helps explain why Hope beat them so bad.

-Even though he was only their third leading scorer, I as very impressed with #30 on Wheaton, he had some very nice moves especially down low.

CalKnight,

#30 is Sophomore Tim McCrary and might be Wheaton's best player. He leads them in points and rebounds most games. Panner and Jahns overshadowed him today but often it is the other way around.

The shot was pretty amazing!!  And the officiating was horrid (but the nearly 5 minute scoreless strech in the later part of the second half was what cost Hope this game).

I did overhear one of the Carthage coaches congratulating Will on his miraculous shot, and then say he was sure that they (Carthage) had fouled him while he was shooting it.

Will's shot should not have counted.  He did not call the bank shot ahead of time!

According to the Hope website, it is their 5th loss at the DeVos, giving them a home record of 64-5 at that Fieldhouse.

I'd assume he was counting both the men and women - the women's team has put the men to 'shame' with only ONE home loss in all that time.
