According to my quick calculation, John Mantel sits at 975 career points. A really nice game tonight will get him to the 1,000 mark!

Out of curiosity, anyone know how many 1000 point scorers Calvin's had?

Seems like Caleb Veldhouse and Dan Aultman were the last two to get the mark, but I'm not sure of how many total the school has had. Seems like a good thing to track on the Calvin sports website...

Looks like Matt Veltema sits at 740 points, so he also has a chance to get there this season. He'll need to average around 13.7 ppg the rest of the way to get it, so it's not out of the question.

Michael McClcary sits at 736 points, so he also has a chance to get a 1,000 points this season. He also has 556 rebounds.

According to my calculations, Mantel also has over 500 rebounds.  How many Calvin players have had over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds?

This version's always been my favorite, and it looks as though it's time to post it again:

I'm told that two sure signs of the onset of old age are a yearning to return to things of the past and forgetfulness--not that I would have personal experience.  Now that Greg has 1) posted the long dead horse and 2) failed to remind us of Guy Fawkes Day the 5th of last month, well . . . .

I thought it was your turn this year to remind us all of Guy Fawkes Day, OK. I get the even-numbered years, remember?

I am continually amazed that man's arm never seems to tire.

I'm thinking of suggesting to my brother-in-law that he put it on his laptop as a screensaver and then use it as a metronome for my niece's piano lessons.

Unfortunately, my other niece is a serious equestrian (she has three horses), so she might not take kindly to her sister's metronome.

Calvin and Hope have now had 4 common opponents: Wheaton, Carthage, Aquinas, and Trinity. Both teams have a record of 2-2 in those games. Calvin's average margin of victory is 5.5 and Hope's is 6.

It doesn't get much closer than that.

A number of telling stats in the battle of the knights against the trolls.

Rebounds: Calvin 48, Trinity Christian 25
3-pointers made: Trinity 5 out of 23, Matt Veltema 6 out of 9
Turnovers: Calvin 23 Trinity 16 (Calvin had trouble with a full-court press). Even so, points off turnovers, Calvin 29 TCC 13.

Snikkers had a very nice game for the Knights -- 18 points. He's a great addition.

It was 2 completely different halves tonight.  Calvin looked poor the first half.  Only Veltema showed much.  Calvin wasn't very good on the defensive side.  Never got to the FT line either.  They did out rebound Trinity by 10.  Trinity is not very good and Jonathan Huizenga was on cruthes for the Trolls.  Calvin led 38-32 at the half.

The second half Calvin came out with some fire and blitzed em.  Calvin outscored Trinity 48-27.  Rebound margin was 25-12 the second half.  Snikkers, Mantel, Veltema, Campbell all played well in the 2nd half.  Defense was much better.  Haverdink also contributed some solid minutes.  The biggest negative was how much Calvin struggled against their full court press.

Schneiders played well of the bench, very patient and solid.  Not the showboating that he tended to do when he started earlier in the season.  Mantel played strong and with more energy than he has shown all year.  Shooting percentage did work to well for him in the first half but he kept going after the boards.  He and Campbell were solid underneath and rebounded well.  Shuster in street clothes tonight.  Apparently and ankle injury but not serious.  Three games in Arizona and then some kind of game at the VanNoord on the 6th of January.  Veltema got his 3 pointer going tonight but will see more pressure when the MIAA starts.

It's time for me to offer a mea culpa to my fellow posters. I noticed an error in my player efficiency calculation that was rewarding 3 point shooters too much. The error is now corrected, so here's the updated Top 25 thru tonights games so far:

Now we see some familiar names in familiar places. McClary and Mantel hit the top 5. I've also added Effective FG% to the table, I figured some may find it interesting.

I think the first half for Calvin tonight was a bit of playing down to the level of the opponent. Too many bad shots, and too many turnovers.

John fought hard down low all game, and he struggled early (it seemed to me that the officials allowed the Trolls to get away with lots of contact) but he still ended up with a double-double (and five assists!). No 1,000 point celebration tonight, but a solid performance nonetheless.

Veltema was strong tonight with 20 points on 6 three pointers (and a couple FTs), but Tommy Snikkers gets the game ball from me, with 18 points 5 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals. Just an all around solid performance for the freshman.

Calvin broke away from a 38-32 lead at the break by outscoring Trinity 16-2 to begin the second half. The run was fueled by some excellent decision making and passing by Mantel who led all players in assists with 5. :o On back-to-back possessions, John recognized the double team coming his way and swung the ball to the weak side player left wide open from the arc. Veltema and Snikkers stepped into and made 3 pointers within seconds of one another jumping the lead from 7 to 13. Later, Big John hit Snikkers cutting down the lane for an easy layup. If Calvin hadn't committed a totally unacceptable 16 second half turnovers, this game would have been a 40 point butt whippin'. It was very nice to see Mantel regularly look for and find teammates when the Trolls doubled down on him. I don't know that this has been a point of emphasis at practice lately, but I sense it may have been. It makes the Knights a much better perimeter shooting team and goes a long ways towards explaining the Knights 11-25 performance from the arc. All those open shots seemed to cut the heart out of Trinity's team. As my son correctly observed, Trinity's offense wasn't bad when they ran it the first half. At some point it became obvious that they had degenerated into street ball and--with the exception of Bruinsma who is a very nice player--Trinity doesn't have the horses to play that style with Calvin. As already mentioned, Snikkers continues to impress. The conference season hasn't begun but he's the clear favorite for Newcomer of the Year. His talent is undeniable and he's starting to play more and more like a veteran. Meanwhile Paul Campbell is just quietly doing his job very efficiently and should be commended for consistently being around the ball.

I was thinking on the drive home about Snikkers' game tonight and in general and came to the conclusion that he is the type of player that can have a very quiet, yet big impact on a game. I don't know the exact way to put it, but he is so smooth and solid and can fill a stat sheet without everyone realizing it. Perhaps it is because he seems to let the game come to him in a way that is not the norm for a young player.

I heard Coach Beilein say about former high school standouts in their freshman season, they should try to fit in before they try to stand out.  What you say about Snikkers is alot like that.  He seems to be finding out where he fits in very nicely.  I'm sure before the end of his career at Calvin, he will be the team's standout player if he can continue to be patient and let it come...much to my chagrin, said the man in the orange sweater.

That score maybe ended up closer than the game was played, double digit lead for CLU for a long stretch of the game, 10 points with just over 3 to go.  Albion was able to get it down to 2 with 7 seconds left.......no quit in the Brits as always.

Well put. I didn't realize that Jennings was a newcomer. What he's done for the Comets is impressive. He may not be Brandon McClary, but it seems Gene Gifford has found a pretty capable replacement. For me, what separates Snikkers from the rest of the players on the list is what he does besides score. Tom has a good nose for where the ball is (he leads the Knights in steals) and where it should go (he leads in assists).
