The conference season hasn't begun but he's the clear favorite for Newcomer of the Year.

Maybe not so clearcut......... ;)

Well put. I didn't realize that Jennings was a newcomer. What he's done for the Comets is impressive. He may not be Brandon McClary, but it seems Gene Gifford has found a pretty capable replacement. For me, what separates Snikkers from the rest of the players on the list is what he does besides score. Tom has a good nose for where the ball is (he leads the Knights in steals) and where it should go (he leads in assists).

Both steals and assists are accounted for in the efficiency calculation, but non-statistical accomplishments (such as positional defense) cannot be accounted for in the rating.

Hope drops one at the Devos to Spring Arbor, 63-55.  Up and down game, closer at the end, then SA put it away.  Rare home loss for the Dutch.

Spring Arbor 63 Hope 58

This was always going to be a tough win coming off exam week for Hope.  Spring Arbor moves to 11-3 and takes 2 of their 3 games vs the MIAA this week.  They've split with Aquinas/Cornerstone, defeated Ohio Dominican and beat previous NAIA #1 Robert Morris to start the season.

Hope had another first half of miserable shooting, just 8-29 and after leading 6-1, were dominated the rest of the first half to the tune of 31-14.  Hope shot better the 2nd half but the hill to climb was just a bit to big and the Cougars held off any rally the Dutchmen could muster.

Nelis 14, Bowser 11, Bunn 10

Hope falls to 5-4 and is off untill the Russ DeVette tournament where they'll play Madonna the first night, and then get the winner of Davenport and Grace Bible which will be a very tough game.

The rest of today's action

Millikin, Ill. 43, Adrian 40.......Adrian really plays a slowdown kind of game
Olivet 80, Finlandia 68
Alma 88, Marygrove 74
Anderson, Ind. 65, Trine 53

With 2 games remaining before the Christmas break, the MIAA is 28-39

Welcome Airballer:  Good question on Mantel.  You hit upon a key problem with many results of statistic mining.  Namely a player's contribution may be greater than the sum of any statiscs you use.  Especially when your entry criteria is the person must average only 5 minutes p.t. per game.
IMO Mantel would play/start on, and make every team in the MIAA better were he to do so.  The same can be said for a handful of other players in the conference this year.  Many of the starters on teams in the MIAA would probably see playing time for most other teams in the conference, but they don't rate as impact or dominant players. :)

That's a good point!  I also feel that a player should have a better efficiency rating the more minutes they get.  Just with the flow of the game, getting consistent minutes helps.  But like you said, I agree, you can't put a stat on "good screens" or "moving without the ball" or "running the floor" to get someone else open!

I was a little surprised no hope supporters agreed or disagreed with my thoughts on Hope's  first half struggles, or Krombeen's struggles.  Any comments after yesterdays display?

Any thoughts on the teams shooting struggles from the floor and the line with most of the games on their home floor?  It is baffling to me....

This forum is a great avenue to praise, question and debate but their has been little to be happy about the last 4 games if you're a Hope follower.  From afar, it seems as though Calvin posters more more "willing" to show concern, complain or dispute things the Knights do on the floor.

There are big concerns Hope followers, opposings teams are picking up tendencies and exploiting predictability.  Did you ever think Peter Bunn would get his shot blocked 4 times in one game? Bowser and his infinite # of offensive fouls? There are reasons....

That being said, I hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe holiday.  Blessings to all

I think the Calvin posters are more used to this kind of struggle than the Hope followers might be.

This will have to be my last post for a while.  It will be number 665, and although I don't want to be superstitious, I don't want to take a chance this close to Christmas.  MLIA.

KS:  Thanks for making the modification.  I kept looking at the original numbers, but couldn't come up with a justification to explain why it just didn't look or feel right.

Yeah, sorry about that. I thought things would get to "normal" once a larger sample of games were played but it still seemed out of whack a bit. It should be good to go the rest of the way. Hey, its pre-conference season for me too!

HoopDreams,
Having seen what this Hope team is capable of on a good night (e.g., Wheaton) I still like their potential, despite another strange first half. We're unlikely to see a repeat of 11.5 minutes without a basket.

One encouraging sign was the return of true center Andy Venema.  The ease of his post-up 3-point play was, we can hope, the first of many more to come if his heel and conditioning continue to improve.
