Just like to comment on from just looking at Calvin's box-score real quickly:

Powell's 3 for 10 performance from the 3-point line isn't a stat normally someone should make a big deal of, but it sure is good to see the kid shoot more and be more involved with Calvin's offense.  He also added 6 rebounds.

Schnyders was 5 for 6 from the field (finished with 12 points), but he only played 12 minutes.   Anyone know why that is?

Good luck Hope tomorrow btw.  Davenport is an excellent team and Hope will have their hands full, as would any team against them.  A lot of us Calvin fans saw Davenport play back in November in the Calvin tip-off tourney and boy did they look impressive.  Very very athletic team....

The game has changed over the years, but I think M. Veenstra, and Mr. Brady from Hope would dominate the MIAA today. :)
I saw both of these gentlemen play and I think if you are literally talking about today as the 09-10 season, you are certainly correct.  However, in my mind, Steve Honderd could have clearly handled both of them.  Steve's dad, Ralph, most likely would have as well.

I really don't; Brad was effective in limited playing time and I can only hypothesize. Calvin played quite a bit with both Mantel and Schuster in the game at the same time. On several occasions when Snikkers left the game the Knights would slide Rodts over to the 2 guard slot and that ate up some of the minutes Schnyders would have otherwise gotten. It seems that Brent is getting more and more comfortable being an inside presence, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Schuster will never be a banger in the low post but he has grabbed several demanding rebounds in traffic the last two days, has altered and blocked some shots, and shown some real toughness.

I have been impressed with Brent's toughness at times this year. Being a 'banger' has more to do with mental toughness than actual physical toughness, especially in DIII ball.

Having been critical of Calvin's use of it's bigs in the past I was pleased to hear how they were being used yesterday.   As we move into the MIAA I expect to see more games like the one with ONU, and I think Calvin is positioned well to compete in that type of game.  Schnyders has been averaging 16 minutes per game so a drop to 12 yesterday doesn't concern me too much.

Looking at the Hope box score it shows A Venema with 7 minutes of p.t.
Any insight?

He's been under the weather - so I was actually happy to see him get those minute - which were all in the second half

1 week from today league play begins, so I have posted rules on the MIAA Pick Em board (same rules as last year).  Get your picks in and you might win a fabulous prize - bragging rights

Thanks for the answer so fast.  I figured he would see increasing p.t. to try to get in shape for the MIAA action.

Thanks for the great work in setting up the Pick-em again this year.  I was getting ready to ask if you were doing it this year, and bang, it's there. :)

Was at the Hope game last night (my 5th time seeing the Flying Dutchmen this year):

I am discouraged by this team so far this year and even more discouraged by what appears to be a very average team at best with limited upside improvement.

I think this team will struggle to play much beyond .500 basketball the rest of the way out.

(Save the negative karma and it is too early to be this down on this team.  I have been watching Hope for 27 years, and this team lacks alot).

Some questions for discussion/comments:

1.  Will Bowser - very erractic so far, can we please get him to a.  just make a layup and not worry about the style points, b.  Focus at the FT and don't back away after the shot is released.

2.  David Krombeen - where did your game from last year go, looks very timid and hesitant when looking to shoot, even though the stats don't show it , from my obseravations, his TO/Assist ratio is trending negative.

3.  Nate Snuggerud - if he is going to continue to start, we need some offensive production, can't go 0-5 from point blank range.  I think he fits the system well, and will have a nice career, but he needs to step up his game.  Not sure if there is a better replacement on the bench, however.

4.  Peter Bunn - please drive and shot the ball more, you are the closest we will get to a Jesse Reimink this year.

5.  Chris Nelis - keep up the hustle and effort, would be a great 3rd or 4th option, but unfortunately you are the #1 or #2.

6.  Ty Tanis - where has the Ty Tanis from Jenison days and freshman year gone?

7.  Logan Neil - keep doing all the little things that don't show up in the stat book, he kept Hope alive in the 1st half last night.  However, he is a role player not a go-to player.

8.  Bench o'Bench - two or three must show they can contribute on a consistent basis if this team has any chance of making a run for the MIAA crown or MIAA Tourney title.

My thoughts only, but this is shaping up to be a difficult year to watch

in response to section 7, here we go...

I've only followed Hope hoops for 20 years and I'm not about to compare this team or its players to others because it's pointless. As far as your questions:
1.  Will is not worried about style points, he's worried about getting a charge called on him first and foremost, shot blocked second, and getting fouled because he does not want to go to the FT line.  Will's creativity with the ball is limited, once he puts it on the floor, teams know he's going to the rim ( how many pullups jumpers has he taken in 2+ years?) hence the huge # of offensive fouls.

2.  David's confidence is at an alltime low right now.  History tells me that he's not getting a lot of positive reinforcement from staff-this will appear again.  His shot is, and always has been erratic, but hope's inability to rebound and create turnovers AND get up the floor limit what David is best at- an uptempo, open floor game.  If he can handle the immense pressure tonight, I predict this will be his best game in a LONG time.

3.  They need to remove Nate from the "starting lineup".  He simply isn't ready to contribute offensively in half court sets, and he gets himself in early foul trouble often which limits his agressiveness.  Right now hope is playing 3 on 5 offensively with him and Krombeen on the floor.
Nothing against him but he is in over his head for someone playing 25 minutes.
4.  Peter cannot drive as well because his teammates aren't hitting shots, meaning teams can help with dribble penetration.  Teams also know that once Peter puts the ball on the floor, he's shooting.  1 time has he put the ball on the ball and passed to a teammate for an easy layup.  This opportunity will present itself often tonight.  As will shot fakes and drawing contact.  He is not even in the same gym with Jesse, bad comparison.

5.  Without Chris, Hope would have at least 2 fewer wins.  He is the MVP and most important player on the roster.  It is unfortunate, and unthinkable that he is Hope's most reliant scorer right now.

6.  Ty has not been the same player since midway through his freshman year because he knows that GVW has no faith in him as a player.  The tacitic of keeping a player grounded ( taking someone out for missing a shot or turning the ball over) works for some, but it didn't with Ty.  I have watched countless players go through the same thing at Hope some succeed, some don't.  You maybe seeing it with Jared going through the same thing already, his confidence isn't the same as it was3weeks ago.  A hot night will always change that.  A 1500 point scorer in class A doesn't forget how to shoot the ball.

7.  Logan has been a very pleasant surprise thus far and is much more athletic than I remember him in hs.  He has definitely been a spark and maybe should be inserted as a starter- Krombeen, bunn, neil, bowser, nelis???

8.   i think "the bench" has shown repeatedly that the will contribute.  In a period wherer the "starters" are struggling so much, you'd think they would get more tick.  The whole strategy of finishing a half or the game with the starters has definitely run its course.  Insert picture of someone beating a dead horse her please.  This premise is about as upsetting as 2 years ago when they thought it was a good idea to put the 4 freshmen on the floor at once with a stiff, I mean Kratz.  That idea set the program back 2 years, think about it and what has transpired.

Simply my thoughts and I'm sure i'll be corrected on a bunch of it.  Hope had better wish that Davenport comes in overconfident tonight or it may get ugly.  Hope needs to protect the ball, make the extra pass and limit dribble penetration and hope that the officials call a tight one.

This is interesting.  Doesn't gvw change his strategy player to player?  I never saw him as a cookie cutter coach.

3 games in less than 48 hours is really telling on the Knights.  Not a good idea to spot a good shooting team 10 or 11 early.
