Given that it was indeed a pretty solid Hope performance yesterday, I was impressed by how well Alma played, and without its top scorer available.  Alma's point guard, who played with great confidence, drawing fouls with effective head fakes and scoring 24 points, had (strangely, given his performance yesterday) only averaged 3 ppg coming into this game.  A breakout game for him?

Calvin up by 9 now, seems that KVS made the adjustments to the system to turn this game around.  Now keep it up, men!

So we should give him credit for adjusting his system that had the Knights down by 13?   ???

Were it not for the excellent f.t. shooting the game ends on a sour note.  I like the rebound margin, but when you shoot as poorly as both teams did it makes for lots of rebounds.

They were down 13 because of lethargic defensive play and a horrible shooting percentage in the paint.  I don't think any coach's system works well if the players on the court don't execute.

I seriously doubt he does that - and Jared's thumbs up to the ref was given immediately after Hope tied up the ball, and Jared was signaling a jump ball in the officials direction, totally a natural reaction.

That was a Joke about GVW.

I thought Snuggeruud turned a bit of a corner in the second half after sitting a good part of the first one. Once he realizes it's not enough for him merely to start, he could become an important contributor. I also am quite fond of Mysliwiec's game.

I would have to agree with the Snuggeruud comment....I think he will be a great contributor once he gets the confidence.....but I don't know where that is going to come from.  Seems like the team as a whole coaches included don't seem to have the confidence they have had in past years..... any ones thoughts on this or am I just missing the boat

One of the observations I see (and keep in mind I've seen only two games) is a distinct lack of on court leadership, that will come with time and game experience.   Sometimes it takes longer than in other years to find out what you have exactly and for players to grab the leadership reigns........it just doesn't come natural for some people.

This team is a hodgepodge of 3 things........former bench players from the 98 team, both Fr at the time (Bowser, Tanis)  players that have transferred in midway through their college careers, none with more than 1 year of varsity play(Nelis, Bunn, Jungling, Venema, Dickerson) and a fairly high number of inexperienced varsity players for a Hope team (Neil, Mysliwiec, Ross, King, Snuggerud, Holwerda, Dickerson again) and their starting PG Krombeen has just 1 year of experience.  Coming into this season Hope had just 2 players with more than 1 year of varsity experience, Bowser and Tanis........I mean, whoa!!!!

Hope has just 2 Sr's (Jungling and Nelis), thats the fewest number since 2004.  I've always felt the best or better Hope teams had large Sr. classes to help in the leadership department. 06 had 4, 07 had 4 and 08 had 6 Sr's.   This is simply a pretty young, relatively inexperienced Hope team and the only way they'll continue to gain confidence is by playing.

I looked out on the court midway through the 2nd half of the Calvin game and it was a lineup of Jr, So, So, Fr, Fr.

How long has Pat Stegeman been a ref?  I hadn't seen him ref before.  Even though he seemed to be fair, it brought back memories of how I really, really, really, really, really dislike him.  :P

Another Hope grad in the league? Wow. Is he going to take over the reins for Geerlings?

Stinger must be on cloud 9

The Hornets start the league 2-0

After a celebratory beverage or two from Bell's Brewery, I imagine Stinger will elevate to Cloud Ten, and deal with you then. ;D

Wow, good call GK. Had a couple of tasty Rye Stouts to toast the victory.

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

I've got to say, the Culver's Ice Cream cone is a little creepy.

sac I would have to agree with you. But I still feel there's a little more missing this year then the previous years.  Sure they are lacking age and experience but maybe the team and coaches need a little more enthusiasm: o.  I think this is the quietest (is that even a word?) year I have seen GVW....  he is doing a little more sitting.  I wish he would stand up and stomp his foot a little more.  That is always entertaining!!!!!!  COME ON GVW LETS SEE SOME EMOTION THAT YOU ALWAYS BRING TO THE GAME!!!!!

I think it is great to see him on the floor again.  Too bad not in orange and blue. I tried to convince him to ref a hope calvin game but he said he couldn't....bummer for us.  He has been on the hope floor for a few games to ref but not during league games.

Since I was talking about the Hope team, what do you think? ::)

I should have added a smiley face of some sort or another.  The "adjustment to the system" was meant to be tounge in cheek, since it seems to be clear from posters on this site that the only MIAA men's basketball coach with a National Championship has no idea how to make such adjustments.   :P :P :P :P :P :-X

A couple of game thoughts following Calvin's big win over Olivet:

1.  Olivet may be 0-2 but I've got to believe they will being doing some damage in the MIAA this year. The Comets are very talented and Hope had better be ready Wednesday night. For those of you who participate in the MIAA pick 'em contest, you might want to consider Olivet to be your "upset" special of the week. It wouldn't be at all surprising to see this squad become the conference AQ.

2.  I'm curious about KVS's decision to have Rodts and Snikkers switch positions. Was it done because he thinks Tom is a better rebounder than Danny (Tom did grab 8 boards Saturday), because he thinks Danny is a better fit at the 2 guard, or some other reason? Maybe the change was made because when Salo comes out, Calvin is left with an all freshmen backcourt? In the end, I'm not sure the change is all that significant because the way Calvin switches people around during the course of the game--even in the middle of possessions--means each player plays both inside and on the perimeter a lot anyway.
