Just because  someone asks a legitimate question, doesn't make them a naysayer. I never doubted John's abilities :)

Couple tidbits from the Olivet/Hope game........

This was Olivet's first win in Holland since 1994, 15 games with maybe an MIAA tournament game or two thrown in there.

I was pleased to hear Coach Davelaar give credit to the Comet defense for tonights win, in all the years the Comets have been on the cusp of competeing, defense has always seemed to be the shortcoming.

I made the trip over to Devos.  Hope's lack of depth really showed tonight.
Myslewic (sp?) played well in the second half.  Jungling, Neal, Venema were all ineffective the first half and didn't play in the 2nd. GVW went with 6 guys the second half.

McClary struggled shooting in the second half but still got 15 rebounds with his 22 points.

I can't figure out why Ty Tanis isn't good enough to play for this Hope team.

In 7 minutes, Andy Venema had 2 points, 0 turnovers, and 3 rebounds.  It's not much to go on, but project those rates to McClary's 37 minutes and it strikes me as an effective contribution.  On several occasions Olivet came up with offensive boards that I thought would have been Hope's rebound if he'd been in there with his strength and 6' 8".  My hunch is that he'll get more minutes as the season continues.

yep, I'm sure they're going to save him until the teams 5 games out of first.

When Hope players go into  the locker room saying to the Dew Crew "we got out coached again" to a friend, there are confidence issues in the system.

I will go back to when tanis was a freshman and how quick GVW was to pull him or any of the 3 other freshman for the smallest of errors.  Bowser is making the same mistakes and the 2 others are out of the program.  Jared's freedom to shoot (and miss at times), and Krombeen's freedom to make a poor decision or 2 last year, were not tolerated with ty's class.  Like I stated in a prior post, a 1500 point scorer (class A, not D) does not forget how to score.  I feel horribly for him, and Nate King, and Holwerda.

I'm not taking anything away from Jared because he has been a huge spark at times but his D is a big liability...often.

Snuggs is a role player right now, not a 25-30 minute player.

And a man with over 600 wins doesn't suddenly forget how to coach.

My guess is that the coaches have a greater and more objective sense of the full range of abilities and limitations of each player than we do. I have no reason to believe they wouldn't have the players on the floor who they thought gave them the best chance of winning. You seem to think otherwise. In any case, my impression watching the game tonight is that Olivet had every bit the talent on the floor that Hope did, if not more so. They are a good team.

Congrats to the Comets on a great road victory.  At the Merrillat tonight, the Bulldogs played sloppy but still defeated the Scots (no Redditt).  A balanced attack, and poor perimeter defense allowed the Bulldogs to light it up from 3 (10 of 20).  Freshmen Dennis Mason came off the bench for his first career double double with 2 nice dunks over the Alma defender that was late in their defensive rotation.  Adrian after opening up a big lead got a little laxed and sloppy (Bruce Keeling as an official never helps the flow of a game either with a series of touch fouls followed by a series of physical no calls.  Never have understood how he isn't stuck reffing 5th grade club teams.  But oh well.)  Adrian is going to have to put consistent efforts togather going forward to content, but then again they have many minutes being played by freshmen that are still adjusting to the collegiate level, as the year goes on they will become more dangerous.  Alma, on the other hand, without Redditt from what I saw, will be lucky to win a game in league play.

This on the same night that Calvin played, according to the post game interview, about 30 minutes of zone defense. gasp!

Well, I'm skeptical of the claim that a Hope player said that to a member of the Dew Crew upon leaving the floor. Exactly how ubiquitous is hoopdreams? I'm even more skeptical of the implicit claim that, somehow, GVW has a pique for the 2011 recruiting class. That doesn't seem even remotely plausible to me.

I agree with that.

Hoopdreams has admitted to wanting to make up crap to stir the pot, is known to spread untrue rumors, and in general to take away from what this board could be.  There is much more to the story of the class of 2011 than needs to be discussed here, and he's way off base.  Read him or ignore him, but don't waste time believing him.

just because the man has won so many games, which is very impressive, he isnt above criticism! the point made about how gvw treats different players is very insightful. ive seen krom make some unbelievable turnovers this year that gvw just claps for and ignores..at the same time jungling comes in and maybe throws the ball away once on a good look and gvw blows a gasket and pulls him. those two freshman with tanis and bowser were good as freshmen then as sophomores looked scared to move. if he recruits these players he has to have some amount of faith in them...the team is strong, not just the starting 5 players.

as far as the comment made by a hope player..you can tell the guys are frustrated out there. they look robotic on the court. it is definitely not the coach's fault that they lost, as olivet picked up who knows how many offensive rebounds. BUT maybe gvw needs to re-evaluate his direction with this team?

come on Wiz, I'm just trying to rile some people up on here! They talk about how great things are but either sit on their hands at the games unless Hope's up by 20, or complain like my ex wife. I threw that comment about the intramural player yesterday to get a buzz going and you were the only one who responded, quite humorously by the way.  Thank you...

Seems to me that this pretty much sums up Hope's stuggle in conference games thus far:

SCORING DEFENSE
# Team                  G   Pts Avg/G
-------------------------------------
1.Kalamazoo College...  3   177  59.0
2.Albion College......  3   187  62.3
3.Adrian College......  3   190  63.3
4.Calvin College......  3   202  67.3
5.Olivet College......  3   213  71.0
6.Trine University....  3   221  73.7
7.Alma College........  3   222  74.0
8.Hope College........  3   225  75.0

IMHO, Hope's greatest strength over the years has been their ability to go on defensive runs.  Not seeing that happen much this year.  Seeing much more of extended periods of time when the offense disappears, and it drags the defense down with it - like the team goes into some kind of funk.  What is amazing is that the exact same players will play extended stretches of games looking great on both ends of the floor.
