Tonight's loses by Olivet and Albion set up a huge match-up between the two on Saturday afternoon. Neither team can afford another loss.

It never ceases to amaze me that no matter what our expectations headed into the conference season, the second Calvin/Hope matchup seems to be the one with the most impact on the conference race. The good news for Calvin is they finished the first half with a 7-0 record, something I did not expect when the conference season started. The bad news is the Knights play Hope, Olivet, Adrian and Albion on the road the second half. Saturday's game is huge for all these teams because if Hope can hold serve at DeVos, all these teams are back in the race. If Calvin wins, it's hard to imagine they won't host the conference tournament.

Doesn't look like any headwear will be ingested tonight as Calvin wins by double digits 73-59.

Veltema leads the charge with 24 points on 6-7 on three point shooting. That leaves just 93 points left for Matt to reach 1,000.

The hat has meekly crawled out from under the bed, giving me the evil eye for such a bold prediction.

Nice to know that El Sombrero is in one piece, even if a bit peeved at its owner.

If Calvin can win on Saturday, the rest of the road games could become irrelevant as far as MIAA hosting is concerned.

Home wins over Kzoo, Trine, and Alma would mean that Calvin could, at worst, tie for the championship, but the two wins over the Dutchmen would Calvin gets the tiebreak over anyone else (assuming Hope stays in the top half of the conference).

I know there's too many IFs and BUTs in those statements to hold any water right now, but I thought it was interesting how important this game is the league title.

Davenport beats Cornerstone 61-60.  Ecford with a layup with 3 seconds to win it.

Four years ago when GR South Christian's David Kool took his Mr. Basketball trophy to Western Michigan University, more than a few people said he wouldn't succeed at the D1 level. Tonight, Kool became the Broncos all-time career scoring leader.

Congrats to a fine young man. I still think he would have looked great in Maroon and Gold. :'(

With his perfomance tonight Matt now leads the conference in 3 point percentage and total made triples. If I do my math correctly, he now has 174 for his career. Andy Draayer set the school career record with 222 and that seems safe. But I believe Todd Hennink is second with 188 and Matt is likely to wind up ahead of Todd on the all time list. That's a pretty good career for the young man from Grandville.

Veltema has quietly had a very solid season.    He has also been very consistent all season.  I am sure Hope will do everything they can do to try and shut him down.

It is tough for opposing teams to shut him down, though, because A) Veltema has become Andy Draayer-like this season as he is hitting shots right in player's faces.  I know he was pretty good at doing that in past years as well, but this season any inch of room he has then he will launch.  B) The very good usage of Calvin's depth this season as allowed Veltema to come into second halfs refreshed enough where he will hit big shots right down the stretch of the game, especially in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Of course I have no fancy stats to back up on why I think he is so tough to guard  :D, but that just seems to be my observation of him this season.

Saturday's Rivalry game is a must win for Hope if they want to host the MIAA tourney. If Calvin opens up a 3 game lead they can almost sleep walk to the conference tourney and still be assured of hosting.

Should be exciting as always.
Tribes of primitve hunters, with rhinestone codpieces rampant, should build pyramids of Chevy engines covered in butterscotch syrup to exalt the diastolic, ineffable, scintillated and cacophonous salamander of truth which slimes and distracts from each and every orifice of your holy refrigerator.

But none of them have done what Todd Hennink did in 1990, when he went 12-14 in a single game.
