Here's the current Calvin 3 point list...as you can see Veldhouse and Knoester are also above Hennink.

Calvin Three-Point Field Goal Career List
1. Andy Draayer (2002-2006) - 222
2. Caleb Veldhouse (2005-2009) – 215
3. Chris Knoester (1990-1994) -188
4. Todd Hennink (1987-1991) – 183
5. Matt Veltema (2006-2010) – 174
6. Jim Timmer (1986-1990) – 169
7. Derek Griffin (2006-2008) – 153
8. Sam Hargraves (1995-1998) 143
8 Aaron Winkle (1996-2000) 143
10. Kevin Broene (2001-2004) 132
11. Nate Karsten (1996-200) 119
12. Ryan Stahr (1993-1995) 118
13. Matt Rottman (1989-1994) 117

But none of them have done what Todd Hennink did in 1990, when he went 12-14 in a single game.

That was very impressive, and I would have loved to seen that in person.  I think Draayer went 9-14 in one game, and it is pretty impressive he has the all-time record with just playing on varsity for 3 seasons, as he was on JV his freshmen year.  I also didn't know Derek Griffin was that high for just playing 2 seasons for Calvin.  It would have been interesting where he would have finished if he decided to play his whole collegiate career at Calvin

Saturday's Rivalry game is a must win for Hope if they want to host the MIAA tourney. If Calvin opens up a 3 game lead they can almost sleep walk to the conference tourney and still be assured of hosting.

Should be exciting as always.

Yep, this one game has all the hype it can get.  This one game is going to make a giant impact in how the regular season conference title chase will be played out.

Ryan Stahr, #12, on the 3 pt. shooting list only played for Calvin 2 years.  He was quite a trip.  I recall during a 1995 MIAA tournament game at the Civivc Center the cheerleaders (in uniforms) from Flat Rock h.s. (Ryan's hometown) showed up to lead the cheering.  What a hoot.  :)  The guy has his own groupies. :D :D :D :D

I also recall another game in which Eddie D. almost blew a fuse when Ryan gets the ball, drives down the floor as fast as possible, puts up/makes 3's on sucessive posessions after Eddie had instructed the team to run the clock down.  Eddie was so flabbergasted after the first 3 he just stood there glowering at Ryan, and didn't react until it happened a second time.  FTR (for the record)  Not one ounce of contrition! :o :o :o

Veltema leads the charge with 24 points on 6-7 on three point shooting. That leaves just 93 points left for Matt to reach 1,000.

With his perfomance tonight Matt now leads the conference in 3 point percentage and total made triples. If I do my math correctly, he now has 174 for his career. Andy Draayer set the school career record with 222 and that seems safe. But I believe Todd Hennink is second with 188 and Matt is likely to wind up ahead of Todd on the all time list. That's a pretty good career for the young man from Grandville.

Veltema has quietly had a very solid season.    He has also been very consistent all season.  I am sure Hope will do everything they can do to try and shut him down.

It is tough for opposing teams to shut him down, though, because A) Veltema has become Andy Draayer-like this season as he is hitting shots right in player's faces.  I know he was pretty good at doing that in past years as well, but this season any inch of room he has then he will launch.  B) The very good usage of Calvin's depth this season as allowed Veltema to come into second halfs refreshed enough where he will hit big shots right down the stretch of the game, especially in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Of course I have no fancy stats to back up on why I think he is so tough to guard  :D, but that just seems to be my observation of him this season.

I'll go with your assessment even without the fancy stats.   :)  I have the same kind of impression of Veltema.  I think one other thing helping him is his height advantage against most other perimeter defenders.  Just using games that I've witnessed for example: I seem to recall that Hope put Ryan Klein on him 2 years ago, who matched him height-wise.  In 39 min. between those 3 games, Veltema went 3-9 (7 3pt attempts) and didn't even attempt a shot in 15 min. in the second game.  I'm assuming Ryan spent most of those minutes in Matt's face.  But then, Ryan was playing some inspiring defense that year, and Matt was "just" a sophomore.  And there isn't a Ryan around this year.   :(

I also looked at Veltema's 3-pt stats for the 08 season vs. this season, and at so far, he has already attempted 1 more than he did by the end of the 08 season.  And either his shot has improved, or his shot selection is better: 34-102 (33.3%) in 08 and 50-103 (48.5%) so far this year.  He's dangerous.  And a problem for other teams not used to defending a 6'-6" 3-pt ace.  This is why I refer to him the way Jerry Seinfeld referred to Newman.  (Veltema!   >:(  )   ;)
If there is one thing I've learned from this board it's this: There's more than one way to split a hair.

ES:  You make some good points.  In prior years Caleb got many of the opportunities for 3's.  This year Matt only has to compete with Rodts at .432, Salo at .421, and just to make Sac tighten his grip on his "blankie" 6" 10" Schuster going for .345 when he isn't blocking shoots.  :) :) :) :)

At this point, imho, Sat's game is pretty much a toss up.  Hope has a big advantage in the De Vos, but if Calvin starts strong, and plays their game Hope has all sorts of matchup problems.

FWIW:  This mornings Calvin sports report indicated Sat's game will be streamed on the Internet.  "The WGVU telecast (video) feed will be streamed live on Saturday at The Rivalry Web site at: http://www.calvinhope.com or http://www.hopecalvin.com"

Sac,
Is the fetal position due to memories of Hennink, who I believe Hope supporters referred to as "The Prince of Darkness?"  or could it be from memories of a Freshman Knoester knocking down 3 triples in overtime in the Civic Center to send Calvin on in the '91 NCAA tournament while the #2 or 3 in the nation Dutchman closed their season?  Just wondering...
