A loss on the road for Calvin.  Not good.  Looks like a fight for 1st.  Anyone worried about the game on Saturday?

Pretty impressive night from McClary and Evans not to mention the 13 assists by Post.  Not much of a contest between Veltema and Mantel vs. McClary.  Snikkers was the best looking Knight in this one.  Looks like the conference tournament may be the most competitive in years.

I was sitting with oldknight at the DeVos last Saturday when the Calvin students dusted off the "Where's your banner" retort -- and we both cringed.  It's hackneyed, and no longer useful.  I wish we'd put it away, and take a few moments to think of something more -- ummm -- banter-worthy.

I know plenty of creative kids at Calvin, but they don't appear to be expending much juice on the rivalry with Hope these days.

Don't worry GK.  Your Calvin kids are still MILES behind our Wooster students in the 'making us cringe' department.  For some reason, the Wooster students can't get it through their heads that their S*** on Witt chant is not only unfunny,  but unoriginal and completely offensive!  Yet they continue to roll it out for each and every Witt game...  :-\

Time to play the "What if..." game.

What if both Hope and Calvin run the table (doesn't seem to likely based on tonight's performances), who would get home court in the MIAA tourney? They both lost to each other and Olivet, and I have no clue what the next tiebreaker will be.

Coin flip?
Point differential?
Overall record?
Hope gets it because Calvin had it last?
Dew Crew vs Knight Nation in a cheer off? or last man standing battle?
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

If I read it correctly off of the Adrian website, the Bulldogs defeated the Hornets 59-50

I vote a mascot death match between "Dutch" and "Joust".  The early line on that match-up is a pick-em as well.  While Dutch is clearly the stronger of the two he is also the slower with the wooden shoes.  Joust has quickness and a shield and weapon in his favor.  Dutch will go for the early knock out blow while Joust will use his superior fitness level and more comfortable footwear in the belief that Dutch will wear down and either get cramps or severe blisters from his retro Nike's.

This match-up could go to either side as could the hosting of the MIAA tourney.

I have to admit that Calvin fans need to step up their game a bit.  My favorite was the solo meow mix song during the opposing team's free throws during the mid 90's.  That being said, I think the banner stuff is still appropriate.

Couldn't agree more.  Calvin's student section definitely could step up to the plate a bit more and especially in games other than the Rivalry one.  Also, the banner retorts are probably getting tiresome and old because those are the ones that hurt the most.  Of course Hope would like their own and have come tantalizingly close on several occasions without closing the deal.  It's like a pair of siblings when the one wants something that the other already has, look no further than the timing of two brand new splendid on-campus arenas for proof.  That's what makes a rivalry "The Rivalry".  We are just lucky that it is a good natured friendly one with mutual respect and more importantly world viewpoints that we can stand shoulder to shoulder as friends about.

Your certainly entitled to that opinion though I have a feeling you may be of the minority opinion on that.  They don't print up t-shirts, sweatshirts and hats or have rings made for 89-86 while they do for 2-0.  What we all need to remember is the things we debate the most (the razor thin difference between the two programs) is also what makes it the greatest rivalry.  A rivalry ceases to be a rivalry if it is lopsided and one-sided, so we should all embrace that aspect (evenness) of the rivalry relationship.

That was actually meant as an extreme compliment to Calvin (gulp). There are two games a year I care about more than any other. If MIAA Championship happens, NCAA Tournament run happens, that is all second to the games against Calvin.

Looks like Calvin is losing the game and the score tonight.  Anyone know what's going on in Adrian?  Live stats aren't updating.  the rest of the games seem to be going as would be expected.

Speaking of needing new material.

Thats tantalizingly close to calling someone a little brother.........that hasn't worked well around these parts now has it. ;)

Well folks I made it down to Olivet forgoing my annual trip to Alma, and passing on what was sure to be an entertaining women's game between Hope and Calvin in Grand Rapids.  Why?  I don't know, probably my age and less of a desire to make long drives on Wed. nights.

Not a single team in the MIAA would have beaten Olivet tonight.  Andre Evans and Michael McClary were awesome and there wasn't anything Calvin could have done to stop those two.  It would be really easy to call this a 'Hope hangover' and there was certainly some evidence of that at times.........I thought Calvin looked flat to start, and once Olivet started making some shots things just kind of snowballed and before you could say gender neutral mascot Calvin was down 13 and Olivet was rolling.

Andre Evans put on an absolute show with 19 in the first half, making big shot after big shot, made a couple steals and broke a couple ankles as well.  He cooled off considerably in the 2nd half mostly because Michael McClary picked up the torch of being unconscious from the floor.

little aside-- the young woman next to me mentioned early in the 2nd half McClary was 3 points away from 1,000 career points and sure enough Michael missed about 5 or 6 ugly shots in a row.......but once number 1,001 went in, I don't think he missed again.

Back to McClary, he had the turn around jumper working tonight and hit from just about everywhere on the court.   Didn't matter how well Calvin defended him, the shot was going in.  For that matter almost every open jump shot the Comets took tonight went in, very sharp perimeter display.

Calvin played a much better 2nd half, and for awhile I thought I might see a monumental comeback.  Snikkers, Powell and Schnyders really kind of took over for the Knights for a time doing just about everything on the floor.  Calvin tried desperately to get Mantel and Veltema going but it just wasn't working and those two spent a lot more time on the bench than I'm accustomed to seeing.  Once McClary started hitting his big shots there was no rally coming.

If Olivet plays that way Saturday night they will smoke the Dutchmen as well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

**  I don't know if Andre Evans and Bryan Powell have a history together but it sure looked like it out there.  Those two really went after each other and both seemed to be enjoying it in a very intense competitive sort of way.

Maybe KVS didn't like the matchup with Salo vs Evans but Powell played a lot and rightfully so, he was pretty good tonight.

**  I chuckle now but earlier today when I mention 3 of the best players in the MIAA were on the floor I completely forgot Andre Evans...........I don't know why either because this kid is clearly the best PG in the MIAA.  But he reminded me in a not so subtle way that he's one of the best in the MIAA as well.  Maybe I lit a fire under him, I don't know.  But the coaches are going to leave a very good player or two off the first team because Andre deserves a spot.

I'm really disappointed the Bulldogs chose to run up the score..........they missed an opportunity for the infinitely impossible Triple Van Halen........I think you get free tacos for that or something.

Good win for Hope and look at how quickly the MIAA race has tightened.

Hope has a huge game on Saturday at Olivet. If they get past Olivet, a big if, and Hope and Calvin win out what is the tie breaker.  Everything I know would break even. Does it go to overall record or coin flip?
