I was sitting with oldknight at the DeVos last Saturday when the Calvin students dusted off the "Where's your banner" retort -- and we both cringed.  It's hackneyed, and no longer useful.  I wish we'd put it away, and take a few moments to think of something more -- ummm -- banter-worthy.

I know plenty of creative kids at Calvin, but they don't appear to be expending much juice on the rivalry with Hope these days.

Don't worry GK.  Your Calvin kids are still MILES behind our Wooster students in the 'making us cringe' department.  For some reason, the Wooster students can't get it through their heads that their S*** on Witt chant is not only unfunny,  but unoriginal and completely offensive!  Yet they continue to roll it out for each and every Witt game...  :-\

Surely my Scot wouldn't do something like that.

If I read it correctly off of the Adrian website, the Bulldogs defeated the Hornets 59-50

I'm really disappointed the Bulldogs chose to run up the score..........they missed an opportunity for the infinitely impossible Triple Van Halen........I think you get free tacos for that or something.

Good win for Hope and look at how quickly the MIAA race has tightened.

Hope has a huge game on Saturday at Olivet. If they get past Olivet, a big if, and Hope and Calvin win out what is the tie breaker.  Everything I know would break even. Does it go to overall record or coin flip?

Right now it would be a coin flip.

uh oh the fairies are out again.

It was me. Following up the dusting spray with the feather duster was weak.

Not as weak as ending every bit of ribbing back and forth with the same old banner reply.    :P

Why does this bother you so much?

The unoriginality, the inability to be creative, the absence of good fun, just to name a few reasons. Its not like Hope people don't know that Calvin has won a national championship. It would just be fun at times to have a good back and forth banter that stimulates good cheers and chants without it ending the same way every time. Right now the Hope section is way more creative and original, while the Calvin section just sits back and rocks the same quote every time. Its just not fun (probably why Calvin students didn't really show up at the Devos).

Calvin's student tickets were sold out more than a week before the game and the section was filled up, so what are you talking about?

Just because Calvin students don't cheer in JV games like Hope's do, it is not fun?  I really admire Hope fans ability to be loud before game-time (I really do), but what's the big deal if Calvin fans don't cheer until the varsity game actually starts.

As for the banner chant, it really was only about 15 students that were chanting it this game.  Not a big deal.

And who really pays 25 dollars for mountain dew bongs anyways?

Time to play the "What if..." game.

What if both Hope and Calvin run the table (doesn't seem to likely based on tonight's performances), who would get home court in the MIAA tourney? They both lost to each other and Olivet, and I have no clue what the next tiebreaker will be.

Coin flip?
Point differential?
Overall record?
Hope gets it because Calvin had it last?
Dew Crew vs Knight Nation in a cheer off? or last man standing battle?

I vote a mascot death match between "Dutch" and "Joust".  The early line on that match-up is a pick-em as well.  While Dutch is clearly the stronger of the two he is also the slower with the wooden shoes.  Joust has quickness and a shield and weapon in his favor.  Dutch will go for the early knock out blow while Joust will use his superior fitness level and more comfortable footwear in the belief that Dutch will wear down and either get cramps or severe blisters from his retro Nike's.

This match-up could go to either side as could the hosting of the MIAA tourney.

Dutch would kill Joust.

I listened to some of the KVS post-game show.  KVS commented that when Calvin got down early in the game that his seniors tried to play too individual-like.

Also said there will be a lot of rebounding and defensive drills in practice tomorrow.

When is the last time Calvin didn't let one player from the opposing team just light it up on them?  This time they let two players light it up on them, which is obviously a big reason they got blown out by Olivet.

Can someone that attended the game care to comment on it?

I think by "show up" they meant more than just buying tickets and sitting in the seat.  Even at Van Noord, Hope students make as much noise as the Calvin student section.  Everything from wearing the colors, having creative chants, making general noise, etc, Hope students dominate Calvin's. Also, Hope students attend games other than the Calvin-Hope game.  This is one area I've repeatedly said Calvin students need to step up their game, and I have no problem giving Hope students props for the great job they do.  The handouts at the Calvin-Hope game instructing the Knight fans how to chant "de-fense" and "Let's go Knights (clap)" were embarrassing.

Now, about basketball, you can see from my last post on Saturday that I was very concerned about the Olivet game, and apparantly rightly so.  Not only was it bound to be a very lose-able game, it was supremely important.  We have probably kissed goodbye to possibilities of a Pool C bid, and now may have to earn the AQ on Hope's home floor.  Yikes.

We are a long way from settling who hosts the MIAA tournament, right now the top seed would be settled by a coin flip.

I just hope that if it comes down to it that GVW and KVS can hold it at a diner in Hudsonville and that the local news shows up to televise the flip, ala Friday Night Lights.

Adrian Hoops Fan

A great nite in the MIAA.  Calvin loses and teams 2-5 win to tighten up the race for the last 5 games.  The young Bulldogs have played their way into a situation of just taking care of their own destiny.  All this with a new coach, only 3 returning players and MAJOR contributions from freshmen  (atleast 6 playing every game).  Adrian is getting the job done with hard nosed aggressive defense.  The team is scrappy and hustles for 40 minutes.  I don't remember an MIAA team holding an opponent to 50 points 3 games in a row.  However, the leagues youngest team is doing so.

Last night, Adrian played a sub par first half and gave Prepolec a great start with 11 points in the half.  Playing most of the half with Matt Wayne in foul trouble and freshman Dennis Mason in street clothes.  However, with great team defense in the second half, Prepolec scored 1 point and was visibly frustrated by the Bulldogs swarming defense.   Hopefully, they stay focused on Alma for Saturday which will set up a great atmosphere for Calvin coming to town next Wednesday with a share of first place on the line.

I think the Dutchmen would beg to differ about that game being for first place.  No doubt the Hope game at Olivet on Sautrday will be a tough test, but Hope has a bit of revenge on its mind after losing to the Comets in Holland.

Olivet played Calvin very close at the Van Noord so last night wasn't totally unexpected.  It is disappointing that Calvin's most experienced/sr. players get lost from the mix at the most inoportune times. :)
