Matt Veltema is #7 in NCAA III for 3 point shooting percentage.

The MIAA has 3 teams ranked among the top 38 in blocked shots

Olivet #16
Hope #28
Kalamazoo #38

Calvin #76
Adrian #107

Adrian is ranked #12 in scoring defense

is Matt still ranked #2 in D3 for free throw % as well?  One would think that a senior rising  to the  high ranks of Calvins career stats for 3 pointers and 1000pt club, top 10 in al of D3 in 2 catagories, on the conference championship team (regular season of course) would warrant making first team MIAA????  possibly???

Matt's 3-4 performance at Kresge leaves him at 91.9% for the year (68-74). Matt Hilton of Ursinus went 7-9 the same night and is now 70-75 for the year so Hilton remains first in D3 free throw percentage. Interestingly, the no. 3 and 4 guys on the list when the week began (George Johnson of Eastern Mennonite and Tony Mane of UW-LaCrosse) also saw their free throw percentages drop during games played this week so I believe Matt is still at no. 2.

I think that his senior status and career accomplishments are probably non-factors in selection on the MIAA all-conference team.  Shooting percentages are probably less important than counting stats like pts/reb/asst/etc and intangibles like defense.  I like Veltema a lot, but in my mind not sure he warrants first team selection this year.

I'm not so sure. Caleb Veldhouse was selected last year he was tied for 11th in scoring, tied for 6th in assists, only shot 72% from the line, didn't have a high 3PT percentage...

And I don't mean to say it should be considered, but it probably is sometimes.

Congrats to Calvin for winning the MIAA title outright, it was shaky for a couple weeks but they've pulled through the last few games and played well in the two games they needed to win.

One shaky game in Holland and then a buzzcut in Olivet.  Other than that, a pretty nice conference season for the Knights.  A very solid run from the Dutchmen to keep things very interesting all the way through.  And who knows what the league tourney will bring?  This one will be hard to predict.  And thanks, sac, for showing some class.

Just starting to look at numbers, and don't expect Matt to make the cut.  MM, Bunn, Joe P., and Mantel appear to have the best claims to post season honors.
To complete the six imo you have to choose from Cruse, Rogers, Clark, & Mosley.
Of those I think Mosley playing for 3rd place Adrian is the next logical selection.
Clark gets eliminated as it is hard to justify 2 selections from the 6th place team.  Cruse gets the nod over Rogers thanks to playing for a more competitive team.
This gives 1 sr. 4 jr's and 1 so., and each of the top 6 teams is represented.

I have to agree with those who feel others are more deserving of all league honors than Veltema.  He is a great shooter, and his defense and rebounding have really improved lately.  But for so much of the season he really slowed down the offense when he handled the ball.  It was so noticeable that when he came in movement of the whole team almost stopped.  Others seemed to be doing so much more to lead teammates to scoring opportunities or to create their own scoring opportunities.

For much of the season Scott Rogers shot >10% better than anybody else in the league and he is a guard/wing.  He is still >5% better than anyone else with most of the rest of the top list being post players.  That alone would get my vote, but top 15 in scoring, top 10 in rebounding, top 10 in blocks all as a frosh ain't bad.  In addition he leads his team in steals and blocks and shoots 73% from the line.

Nobody is discounting his talent, but his team is in 7th place.  There are also very good players on the top 4 teams that will be left off.  That is why there is a 2nd team.  With only limited spots available for 1st team, the coaches have to make a very difficult decision of who is left off of the list.  In all likelyhood, there will be only one player from the top 3 teams on the list and it is very possible that due to the balance Adrian has had they might not get one first teamer.  for example, Mosely and Wayne are both canidates but they could split votes and both be left off and being in third place both shouldn't be on 1st team. Same goes for Joe p & Clark. This is never an easy list for the coaches to make and there are always very good players left off.  Calvin will not get Rodts, Venema & Mantel on the list and Hope won't get Bunn, Bowser & Nelis on there.  This is why it is such an honor to be named to the first team.

I know people hate thinking about stats other than those that can be easily looked up on miaa.org, and especially per minute stats, but Matt Veltema gets his numbers in about 27 minutes per game, Rogers and Mosley both get 30+ minutes per game (Cruse is only about 26 minutes/game). Not saying it puts him above the rest, but maybe it should be considered.

It will be a close race for the last two spots.

I think if it's close, a veteran from the league champion may get the nod over a rookie from a cellar dweller.

Great points .... can't disagree much.

But when a wing player scores nearly 60% time he shoots and then goes on to get these rebounds, that's tough to ignore.  And since his team only shoots 42%, it is clear he is not taking bad shots.

Whatever way it goes, we are talking about 8-10 outstanding players.

It really comes down to criteria.  If team performance is a key factor in the decision, then I can't disagree.  If you are talking about the best 6 in the league, I think I have a point.  While it is nice to honor the upperclassmen, this is a performance award.

What is cool is that no matter which way it goes, we will get to enjoy most of these players for at least one more year.
