#23537
FINAL (OT):

Calvin 78

Alma 73

The Knight's bench really stepped it up today.
Calvin avoids a near-embarrassment, but gets the job done to wrap up their second straight outright MIAA regular season championship!

Mr. Ypsi

YIKES!  Calvin need overtime to beat Alma (AT HOME); Hope barely survives Trine (AT HOME) - could be quite an interesting tourney after all! :o

In the other game this afternoon.

Olivet 85 Kzoo 55.....so the Comets clinch the 4th seed.

MIAA Tournament

Alma at #1 Calvin
Trine at #2 Hope
Kzoo at #3 Adrian
Albion at #4 Olivet

KVS mentioned that Mantel got a hip pointer at Albion, and the first Alma play today it gets hit on a strong move to the basket.  He just didn't look effective.

Is anyone going to be surprised to see an Alma/Trine Championship game?

Mantel was obviously not very mobile, and he hadn't practices the last two days. KVS said he was happy to have what he got from Mantel because he was needed this game.

As KVS said, Calvin may not have played a great game, but they came ready to play and didn't play badly. Alma really played an inspired game. At one point they were 10 of 14 on three-point attempts. They ended up hitting 15 of 28.

Perhaps in another galaxy, but not here, and not this year.  I predicted it would take 11-3 to win the MIAA this year, and that I wouldn't be surprised if someone went 12-2.  I also predicted Hope would win the MIAA.
The bottom teams in the MIAA are no better this year than they historically have been.  At the same time the top teams this year have not seemed to be as dominant as past teams, but can't prove that based on the final standings.  The poor pre-MIAA showing still hangs over this year. :)

Calvin seemed uninspired through most of the first half.  From introductions to doing very much to guard Ginther, they seemed to be in a fog.  A dozen shots seemed to be right on target, just to rattle around and roll out.  They came alive toward the end of the first half, but still seemed surprised by Alma in the second half.

Highlight of the first half--little shaver in the from row under the west basket drops his box of gobstoppers, and he races to stop them from going on the floor.  Luckily, play was at the other end.  Quick reflexes, he gets most of them, but one rolls all the way out to the left elbow. Several fans alert the ref, who is looking for it, but does not see it.  Another ref finally sees it, stops play and gets rid of it.  The other ref turns to us and says, "What did you expect, I'm a ref, I don't see anything!"   ;D ;D

Looking at the box score, I am amazed to see that Calvin scored 22 points in the overtime!  The same as the whole second half!

Pretty realistic, and almost prescient.

Of course, 14 of those points were free throws, and Alma wasn't playing keep-away any longer because they were behind.

Schuster really stepping it up down the stretch for the Knights.  His 2 free throws in regulation were clutch

Schuster was great the whole game.  Campbell was also very good.

I must have been watching a different game.

I felt like I was watching the team from the beginning of the season, not the team that has earned tournament consideration.

Just reporting what I took to be the sense of KVS' post-game interview.
