Those 3rd stringers should not be getting a bad rap for Saturday's game.  GVW has a history of treating his 3rd string like crap and when he puts them in rough situations and yanks them when making one mistake, its no wonder they never seem to gain confidence.  The 3rd string (minus Snuggs) made a big run in the first half, showing that these kids are quite capable if given a chance.  Beyond Bunn, the rest of the players on this team are not THAT much different in talent level. Bowser and Nelis have more experience, Krom had a good year last year, and Venema is just one large human being. Coincidentally, those players are allowed to do whatever they want without much more than an occasional stomp of the foot from GVW.  When a guy like Jungling throws a bad pass, it appears to be the end of the world. Hope as a lot of untapped talent and athleticism, I pray for the day that GVW opens up the offense and lets some of these kids create!

Anybody know the tournament schedule beyond the first round games? I would expect the semis to be Friday night, and the championship Saturday night, but haven't seen anything posted yet. The semis and final should be outstanding. I'm glad the Knights have home court advantage, but I'm not sure it will help much, unless Calvin students show up in full force.

Thank you SAC for clearing up the whole subbing pattern at the end of that game.  What I find humorous is that the starters played a huge role in Trine's comeback, as well as the post season changing loss at Adrian.  They were also primarily on the floor during the 6 or 7 game stretch at the beginning when Hope played so poorly.  The games do slow down when GVW subs 5 out, but the role players are hardly responsible for teams playing with Hope that shouldn't be there

I too think that other than Bunn, there really isn't a whole lot of differences basketball wise with this group. You're telling me that King or Ross cannot take the ball to the rim and miss, often, as one certain starters do?   Athletic ability in certain cases yes.  Anyone who thinks that the role players are given as much freedom as starters to get into the flow of the game- missing a shot or 2 or a turnover- is an absolute fool.  These people probably think Hope had no chance of winning at Adrian down 5 with 63 seconds too.

My only issue with the subbing is the insistance of having 5 guys on the floor who are lacking in PT and confidence because they know they're going to yanked ASAP.  Why not sub out so you always  have 2 or 3 starters on the floor, Like KVS generally does?  I know I'm beating a dead horse, insert pic, but its frustrating to watch games come to a halt because there is no flow due to a lack of confidence and game experience.  Not to worry now because he won't sub now that the tourney is starting unless there is foul trouble.

The game plan, intensity and execution was outstanding against Trine.  It was nice to see then fine tune some things heading into tourney time

Amen!!  All reports to the contrary Hope is not dead.   As much as some posters want us to think their's is a lost cause I ain't buying it. :)   I remember last years MIAA tournament.

Technically The site for the semi's, and the finals is the highest remaining seed after the first round.  We will know that site Wed. eve.  If Calvin wins they host.  If they lose it goes to the next highest seed that wins that night.

An absolute fool?

So let me get this straight: if I am of the opinion that certain players are starting because, well, they're better, and may or may not be given a bit more latitude as regards the game plan, such a nuanced position renders me an absolute fool?

Realist..once again, thanks for being true to your name, both in this post and your earlier one.  I just don't get those who are so quick to judge and bash, and I find it petty, but hey, that's just me.  There's so much more that happens than any of us (other than the directly involved parties) will know, in practices, in meetings, etc., no matter how close you are to any given program.  And last time I checked, all those involved in all of the programs across the MIAA are just humans, subject to imperfections (as are those who post).  And yet lose one game after a 9 game winning streak and all hell breaks loose.  Ah well...

Good luck to all this week -- it's going to be a great time!

my post didn't pertain to starters in question, nor game planning.  It was about a "latitiude" given to starters in regards to shot selection, turnovers, and an opportunity to make plays.  If each player was given that same "latitiude" the role players would most likely contribute more and display a greater confidence.  I could be wrong, but I doubt it.  How many times has Holwerda been allowed to play through a mistake this season.  Does Bunn get taken out after a poor entry pass into the post? Does Jungling?  These are valid questions.

SAC, regardless of losing 1 game since the middle of January, they have played poorly the last 2 games leading into the tourney which I'm sure no coach wants.

If one wants to comment on game strategy, it is one's right.  there has been no explanation as to why they did not foul in the last minute at Adrian.  No explanation to the press (which is not obligated) BUT most importantly, it was not addressed to the team as to why their coaching staff gave up. This I know because I asked 2 players, one who is a captain. If you want to pretend it didn't happen, fine.  That's not bashing nor judgingCM, the way the last 63 seconds played out was fact.  And it potentially cost Hope home court through the tourney.  Maybe Adrian hits all their FT's, we'll never know.

Speaking of "Stomps of the foot" I thought that Calvin's offense may have been stymied a bit after KVS gave John Mantel a chiding foot stomp following a three point attempt. It was clear that Mantel, a player that puts up the occasional three, wouldn't even consider taking another even when he had open looks.

Not to rag on KVS, I think he does a good job handling his players but did anyone else notice this or am I making too much of it?

JM is shooting 25% from 3 this year.  I don't think Calvin's offense became stymied because KVS wouldn't let JM shoot the 3.

I don't think it has crossed anyone's minds to count out Hope.  They match up well with Calvin, if they do end up playing them, and they have beaten Adrian before if they play them Friday.

2008 Hope is the only host-team since 2002 to win the conference tourney as well.  Pretty crazy...

Oddly enough, I calculated John's career stats today......in MIAA play, he's 14-50 from trey for his career.  Just 2-11 this year.
