Happy Calvin Guy

One of the biggest keys to tonight's Calvin-Olivet matchup is at point guard.  Clearly Andre Evans is a bigger star than the Salo/Powell combo at this point in their careers, and how he performs is key.  In Calvin-Olivet I this year Evans missed a ton of shots and Calvin won at home.  In Calvin-Olivet II, Evans went off for 27 in a rout of Calvin.  Perhaps more important than shooting though is Evans' ability to provide solid leadership from the point guard spot.  I've seen him have mental breakdowns at times.  Some early turnovers coupled with a newly loud student section would be huge for the Knights tonight.  Evans is 2nd in the league in turnovers but handled the ball very well in both matchups against Calvin, if my memory serves me Olivet as a team had single digit turnover totals in both those games.  If Calvin can win the turnover margin I predict we win.

I think we tend to view Olivet as an underperforming team.  But since the first game against Calvin this year, Olivet has 9 wins and 4 losses by a total of 13 points.  Should be a great game with both teams playing potentially their last games of the season.  Go Knights!

And so it heats up for the expected Saturday match.

Yes, indeed, but I honestly believe the Knights can handle the Bulldogs.  ;)

In fact that was proven during the season - 100%.  Scoring enough points to stay within 20 points of Olivet - 50%.    ::)

But at least we beat Olivet on our home court this season   ;)

It should be a close game, though.

Couldn't agree more. Evans has been the wild card all season and his play (for good or ill) has been the the biggest factor in Olivet's success or failure this year. In the first round of conference games, Evans had a tough game (5-19) in a loss against Calvin and good one (7-14 including a backbreaking late triple) in Olivet's win against Hope. In round 2, Evans exchanged the favors by blistering Calvin (10-16) and laying an egg against Hope (2-9, including 0-4 from the stripe). Evans also went 0-6 in a loss vs. Kazoo. In fact, if you look at Olivet's box scores for the year, Evans' performances are almost always predictive of his team's chances at success. If he hits some early 3's tonight, that's not a good sign for the Knights.

My take on Olivet is to not get too worried about Mr. McClary.

He's a beast. He's gonna score 20+. You can't do anything about it.

Play Michael one on one in the post (with occasional help, to keep the team off-balance), and don't allow the Comets to get hot from beyond the arc. Evans is a big factor, because McClary will score anyway. Preventing a second or third guy from getting hot will prevent the Comets from beating you.

Everyone else is guardable (and shut-downable?) so make McClary score 40 to beat you.

Congratulations to Hope on a great win.  AC seemed a step slow on defense in the second half and Hope took advantage of it.  Adrian is losing some good seniors especially Matt Wayne but are very young.  It will be interesting over the next couple years to see how the program continues to grow.  Best of luck to the remaining teams.
