of interest to the Pool C hopeful's in this room.......Heidelberg upset John Carroll tonight, this has wide ramifications for rankings in the Great Lakes region.

Toward the beginning of the season, I surely wouldn't have expected to be able to say that Calvin's defense, rebounding, ball-control, and steals helped them survive such a poor night of shooting!  :o

Olivet's lack of depth hurt them down the stretch......not much subbing that I can recall the entire 2nd half and by the 4 min to go mark they looked gassed.

Haven't seen anyone give credit to Calvin's defense in the final 5 min, Olivet could really only find tough jumpers and I don't think they had any of the easier layups they got in the first half.

....and Calvin's game plan of doubling McClary every touch kept him off-balance all night.  Thats as uncomfortable shooting the ball as I've seen McClary in the 3 games I saw him this year.

Very entertaining game of runs from both teams, I enjoyed it.

Classy move after the final buzzer, Mantel and McClary hugged and gave each other words of encouragement, as they will not see each other on an MIAA court again.

Thankfully Carthage came back to win after being down at the half and into the second half against Augie. At this point I'm not sure we need to worry about Carthage winning as Illinois Wesleyan is probably in anyway.

Wooster needs to take care of business otherwise Calvin could have two Pool C hopefuls ranked ahead of them in the Great Lakes. Hope have a little more room for error.

CALVIN just needs to take of business and not worry about who is ranked higher.

Your observation is right on the mark. The Knights showed enormous character in overcoming many obstacles to beat a very good Olivet squad. Veltema willed this team to victory and Powell injected some badly needed spark at just the right time. Both teams deserved to win but Calvin's defense was outstanding, especially down the stretch. I can't believe they limited Evans and McClary to 18 points on combined 7-25 shooting.

That was a Hallmark Hall of Fame moment. Their mutual respect was much in evidence there. I suppose no one snapped a picture but if anyone did it would be worth seeing. Just what D3 hoops should be about. McClary is simply a stud post player.

Got back from VNA with tickets to the game tonight.  Somehow managed to get charged the staff/faculty rate of $3 per ticket, not the $7 I paid yesterday.  Maybe a sign of things going Calvin's way tonight?

I'm in Florida and was not able to listen to the video feed because my computer access is so slow that I lost about 90% of the action.  Listening to the audio, I found myself wondering how in the world Calvin ever won!  Comments on Posting Up and the MIAA website helped things to make sense.   It was interesting to note that the first 7 or 9 points of the critical scores by Calvin came from subs.  The comments of about Olivet's lack of strong subs and the effect of playing starters too long made sense.

I'm sure that's the team mentality, but we fans can always worry about who's ranked higher and what ifs. I've been doing it since Christmas.

I think Calvin's success on him came from not allowing him good post position. Many times down the stretch he was forced to shoot from outside his range. I know he's an improved shooter, but he's not going to knock down shot after shot from just a step or two inside the arc. No easy baskets for McClary last night. Seems like every shot he made, you just had to tip your cap and say 'great player'.

Best non-Calvin or Hope MIAA player I've seen, though I only go back to about '03-'04.

I'm not exactly sure how Calvin won that game last night either. A huge 3 by Danny Rodts to step behind the line and get Calvin to within 1, and then another big one later by Trent Salo. Matt Veltema can get a shot off as quickly as anyone I've ever seen. Calvin did a good job aggressively double-teaming McClary in the second half, usually bringing the help from the weakside and not leaving him with a good passing lane.

Andre Evans did receive a shot in a very sensitive area right before getting leveled by Mantel (an absolutely clean pick, but painful to watch). I'm betting he's plenty sore this morning.

People have commented on the officiating in the Calvin/Olivet game, and I have to say it was laughably bad (well, I could laugh, as I had no rooting interest). That said, I didn't think one team got the better of it. They just made bad calls all over the floor to the disadvantage of both teams. At one point in the 2nd half Calvin had 9 fouls to Olivet's 2. I suspect OK and GK put a bug in the official's ears and a string of fouls was called on Olivet.

Did anyone "shush" Joe Post after the game?

I think you're right.  Calvin really started the road back when the officials decided to "even" things out.

I don't know if it was evening things out as much as Olivet just started playing tired defense and hacking alot and being out of position.  It was noted the fouls went from 9-2 to 9-10 pretty quickly........and the last 9 fouls of game were called on Olivet, and Calvin didn't get whistled once in the last 9:48 (which is......uh, interesting come to think of it).

Tom Snikkers got the absolute worst of the officiating......4 really bad calls from my perspective went against him, and as often happens to Freshmen in big games, he was mentally out of it most of the night because of it.

The worst thing to happen to the officiating in the MIAA tournament was Dave Joppie being hired as a baseball manager.

At least both sides know Schipper and Geerlings can't work tonights game.

In order to protect the guilty I won't say who it was but it wasn't GK or OK. A strong voiced Calvin fan seated behind me shamelessly begged the baseline official--standing less than 20 feet away--to "give the Knights one call, any call, just once please." It wasn't 10 seconds later that the same official called Albion for a foul on an entry pass to Campbell that was one of the softer fouls committed all evening. Thus began the first of 7 straight foul calls against the Comets to even the count at 9. HC is correct; in the end, each team was equally (dis)advantaged.
