Did your wife also happen to be at the 2006 NCAA tourney second round Calvin/Hope match-up and be taping the last half minute as well?

Unfortunately she wasn't. That was before she officially became Mrs. KnightSlappy.

I'm not sure anyone could have recorded that play. There was such a strong gust of wind that any camera surely would have been blown out of your hand.

Is this the old Pat or new Pat?

As you keep taunting me, I'm not sure how you expect peopleto react, Sac. You can certainly bring out the "old Pat" by continuing to taunt me, if that's what you feel you need to do to make yourself happy. Thanks for bringing that guy out of the woodwork. I  hope you liked it.

With all the talk about Calvin missing the tourney, it's really simple.  Calvin lost to Hope three times this year, twice on home floor.  Hope fans -quit complaining about GVW, look at his record vs. KVS.  Calvin fans, aren't we tired of losing to Hope?

Here's a suggestion - how about we talk about basketball.

I would get tired of it it Calvin was getting blown out, but that hasn't happened recently. If the two teams played four more times this year I am certain we'd see four more great games.

Calvin almost as easily could have gone 3-1 against Hope this year, but they just couldn't get it done at the end of a couple games. I'll tip my hat to both teams for giving us some good games, and I'll tip my cap to Hope for closing out the games (although I would have liket to see Paul shoot a 1 and 1  :)).

I may have missed it but who has been complaining recently? I know at times fans have their gripes, myself included, but I don't recall any recent criticism (at least in terms of the conversations on this board in the last week).

5 of the last 7 games had a chance to be decided on the final possession or final minute of the game........really can't beat that for excitement

Not to mention the built in cardio workout for us fans.  The kind of games where you feel bad that someone has to lose, until you remember it's your rival, and then you don't feel so bad for them (just being honest)

Here we go again!

Kidding,

You guys are great and I like it.  We like it.

We'll see how everything goes down.  While I like the competition and the convo, I didn't realize that the MIAA vs NCAC dislike was unknown here to you guys.  It's actually been one of those things like we have with the OAC (although the OAC dislike is much higher).  At any rate, it would be nice to have a weekend where we do an NCAC vs MIAA weekend, what do you guys think about that?   While Woo played KZOO, I'd like to see a Hope or Calvin come down again or even WOO be invited up.  That would be nice.

At any rate, only one of the two (Hope and Calvin) getting in was right.  No way they both should have gotten in especially given how weak the conference was.  That would have been like Witt getting in, which would not have been right.

Go Scots, and let's watch and see what unfolds.

It's all love!

Well, it is that time of year again for us Calvin fans to dig deep and ask the big question, "do we or do we not support Hope in the NCAA tournament?"  While the obvious and rational answer is "no", allow me share my top ten reasons to show our support for the Flying Dutchmen in their pursuit of a national championship.

10. It will give Babbitt something real to babble about.
9.   It will justify the 1:1 coach to player ratio.
8.   Keep Holland is a happy place.  Don't ruin their day.
7.   Allow the male chearleaders a little national "exposure".
6.   Allow the player's infamous financial donors to finally get a return on their investment.
5.   Let their young players earn some national attention so Elders will know who to recruit.
4.   Be merciful and finally give GVW a reason to retire.  The man has waited long enough.
3.   Show the LOVE and prevent their old seminarians from wishing to punch you in the nose.
2.   Keep sac happy so he doesn't try to delete your post.
1.   Encourage Hope to earn a real banner so they can remove their attendance and participation banners.

FWIW - here is probably the best look we'll have at the strip by Bunn.

http://www.wzzm13.com/video/default.aspx?bctid=69166726001#/Sports/MIAA%20Mens%20Championship%3A%20Hope%20vs.%20Calvin/50790483001/50951452001/69166726001

And I suspect we will still not all agree about it.  I have heard from several sources that Mantel said he was not fouled on the play, but I do not have any proof of that.

I've got to say, and this is coming from a Calvin alum and supporter with maroon tinted lenses, that the strip on Mantel from the above video appears to be pretty darn clean and definitely a good no call.  Just because a player throws out his arms when going up to the hoop doesn't always mean there was a foul or he was hacked.  No on the flip side of the coin, if Vennema climbs on Campbell's back anymore than he did he's going to have to saddle him up and put on a cowboy hat and chaps because he was riding him like a cowboy.  That was clearly a foul and most certainly did affect the shot as Campbell is forced to the baseline and under the basket when having to put up a shot before he either travels or falls out of bounds.

Bottom line they got the one call right and the other call wrong in that instance and they both favored Hope.  However, don't take that as the reason why Calvin lost.  In a close one possession loss you can pick out at least 20 different plays in the course of a game that MIGHT have made the difference or the fact that someone said Calvin had like one FG in the last 5+ minutes.

Happy Calvin Guy

If you're John Mantel, you can complain about the calls but that does no good.  They aren't going to go back and change the results.  Or you can do the mature and classy thing and deflect attention from the officiating.  To his credit, sounds like John is doing the latter, reinforcing some of the positive comments made on this board about his character.  Some of us on this board, me included, can probably learn a thing or two from that.
