Calvin's 2010-2011 Schedule is up.

http://www.calvin.edu/sports/mens/basketball/schedule.htm

Heidelberg, Ohio Weleyan, and Grace make up the Calvin Tipoff Tourney, so that's at least one regional game, maybe two (pairings are not up).

Over Christmas break, they'll head to Elmhurst with Elmhurst and Benedictine (and one more?). Elmhurst should be in-region, Benedictine is not (although it was a few years ago, wasn't it? maybe not).

Then it's on to the MIAA season with Hope as the opening opponent again.

NAIA opponents include Trinity, Aquinas, Davenport (before the tip-off tourney!), and the GRSHOF Tournament.

Mapquest say 203 miles to elmhurst.

I am not a huge fan of Hope-Calvin opening MIAA play against each other. I rather see them get into the MIAA season with a game or two rather than have it right after Christmas when students at one or the other school aren't necessarily around. Hopefully, after 2010-11 that'll switch up again.

I saw on another board that Wittenberg has an open date for next year.

Paging GVW....Please call Witt. Schedule game.

For the NCAA it's "officially" 198 miles from Calvin to Elmhurst, but 202 from Elmhurst to Calvin. We'd need some clarification, but since the game is at Elmhurst, I believe they would be in-region.

I was just making the same check. Very odd that the mileage is different in reverse. Odd.

It's actually quite common, but I don't think anyone knows quite what to do with the matchups that are on either side of the fence.

Because of one-way streets, longer freeway ramps, etc., being different by a mile or two is quite plausible.  Being different by four miles (especially those critical four miles) sounds like another SNAFU. :P

Elmhurst is 4-5 miles almost straight east of Wheaton, and if memory serves they measured Calvin-Wheaton at 202 miles, so I can't see how it could NOT be in-region.

GVW and KVS please call the GRSHOF people and tell them you will play a MIAA/WHAC challenge only.  Calvin/ Hope games should not be non league unless they meet in the NCAA tournament.

Agreed. I can't believe I am about to say this but I am getting tired of 4 Hope-Calvin meetings a year. (Did we hit five once even?) That's just too much. I think it actually devalues The Rivalry.  I'd really like to see an end to Hope and Calvin participating in any tournaments, like GRSHOF, they could end up meeting each other in.

A MIAA/NCAC or OAC challenge would be more enjoyable and I believe offer more to the teams as well.

Benedictine is 205 miles per the NCAA calculation, but Bing says it's possible (but not recommended) to do it in 196.8 miles.

Benedictine (IL ) was listed as in-region during the 2006-2007 season.

Perhaps there is one spot in the Elmhurst Classic yet to be filled?

HopeConvert

I agree with CHN and others: 4 times a year is too much as it devalues The Rivalry. And I also would LOVE to see Hope/Calvin take on CoW/Witt every year. There's no downside.

The NCAA mileage site is temporarily down, so I can't provide an exact figure for the door-to-door measurement between Calvin and Benedictine, but mapquest.com says it's 204.86 miles.

Last fall on September 30 Elmhurst posted a notice in the Men's Tournament room of the Basketball Open Dates section of d3boards.com that it was looking for teams for its December tourney in 2010-11. That doesn't really answer your question, but it does indicate that the Bluejays have had a public feeler out for almost half a year now.

'06-'07 Calvin and Hope played five times.  The home team went 0-4 in those matchups (one neutral site).   I have no problem with meeting that many times since that means we both made the NCAA tourney.  But, the one I would be willing to let go of is the pre-league tourney matchup, especially if it's in a consolation game like this past season.

Yeah...soon it will be like playing ALMA for Hope...just win when it matters :)
