Keith Appling, Detroit Pershing and future Spartan named Mr. Basketball.

The 2009 state championship game is the only time I have seen him play. I don't need to see any more to understand he is a deserving recipient.

Agreed.

Mr. Basketball announced

http://freep.com/article/20090323/HSS/90323034/Pershing+s+Derrick+Nix+named+Mr.+Basketball

The BCAM has some 'splainin to do.  ::) :-\

That's the truth. Nix looked awful. Even though his teammate was ineligible for the award because he's a junior, there have to be several more deserving choices than Nix for Mr. Basketball. They say Nix has dropped 50 pounds since last year and he needs to drop about another 30. Those famed 3 hour Izzo practices are going to be hell for this kid.

I saw both the A and B finals yesterday and there was an awful lot of athletic talent on the floor. The 49 I saw Appling score yesterday was the most spectacular one man show I've personally witnessed since Honderd dropped 61 on Kalmazoo. The amazing thing is that Appling only needed 24 shots to score his points. My son correctly observed that it was the quietest 49 he's ever seen. Appling is the full package too, dishing 5 assists, grabbing 7 boards, and showing me he has excellent defensive skills. Appling is going to make Izzo a happy man in two years when he shows up on campus as heir apparent to Kalin Lucas. The following article argues that despite next year's loaded class of high school senior hoopsters, Mr. Appling is the clear favorite for Mr. Basketball in 2010.

The voting wasn't even close either.  328 first place votes to 114 for Trey Ziegler at Mt. Pleasant.

He's probably the best in-state player since Jason Richardson or Shane Battier, thats debatable certainly.

The past years final vote standings is a nice walk down memory lane......

Evan Bruinsma is a 6'5" wing at Western Michigan Christian.  He is an excellent player.  I believe he was All State in basketball last year as a junior.  His team has won the Class D state championship the last 2 years.  He was their leader last year.  I think he was the 6th man as a sophomore.  If I remember correctly he was also an excellent soccer player.  He would look great in a Calvin uniform next year.

A recent Muskegon Chronicle article says that Evan Bruinsma is interested in Ferris State and other GLIAC schools.

Bruinsma to Ferris State per Steve Bell:

Bell named Bruinsma his Class D player of the year this afternoon.

I never had a moment's doubt that this young man would follow the money, just as all his older silblings did.

Grand Haven put up a game effort tonight in one of the fastest high school games I've ever seen.  K-Central's press is just too much for most high school teams to handle and tonight was no different, 21 Buccaneer turnovers.  KC pulled away from the late 2nd quarter on and won 54-36

Big crowd at Eastern HS too, a little more than last year's KC/Rockford quarterfinal game.  Grand Haven brought the largest student following I've seen in that gym.  The 5,000 estimate by the press is about 1,000 too many though.  But for two high school's being an hour and a half....and two hours away, thats an impressive showing.

Not sure this K-Central team is as good as last years, but when  everything's done they might just be the 'A' Champion.

Calvin Christian and Holland Christian both lost this evening.

sac

Ann Arbor Huron beat Saginaw Arthur Hills, making K-Central an even bigger favorite.

Huron v Southfield

K-Central v Detroit Denby in the A Semi's.

Denby eliminated the defending champs Detroit Pershing last week, that should be a good matchup.

sac

In 'B' its Detroit Country Day vs Muskegon Heights.......Gull Lake v Lansing Sexton

Friday should be a really good day at the Breslin Center.  All 4 games should be good.

I might have to make time to go to the A semi involving Ann Arbor Huron, one of the largest schools in the state. The River Rats are said to be a well balanced team that includes Jalen Bouma, a tough minded point guard apparently headed to Calvin this fall, who consistently scores about 10 per game. Beating a perennial power like Saginaw Arthur Hill--led by Maurice Jones, one of the state's top players--says something good about Huron's talent level.

Jalen Bouma (#5) makes a fast break layup ten second into this video from last night's game:

All semi-final games will be streamed live.

WMC 62 Covert 61

WMC tries to give it away but Covert refused the gift.  Bruinsma 1-6 from the FT line in the final 2 minutes.  He looked awful shooting the ball at the line.  WMC never trailed.

SBell

Apparently Bruinsma's commitment to Ferris is "soft," with an out for D1 schools (Davidson, Detroit, Harvard, Creighton, Northeastern showing interest).
