Apparently Bruinsma's commitment to Ferris is "soft," with an out for D1 schools (Davidson, Detroit, Harvard, Creighton, Northeastern showing interest).

Thanks Steve, no out for Calvin, huh?

Seems to me that recently the out for Calvin has been a tournament game against Hope

Sorry ziggy - but if you're going to lob the ball up like that, it's just asking to be hit out of the park  :)  ;)  :D  ;D

You can call me beef because it's what's for dinner and I just got served!!!

Dashing my dreams of a recruiting class so epic there was no room for Bruinsma and now an off-season jab, this is going to be a tough day. :)

Ann Arbor Huron beat Saginaw Arthur Hills, making K-Central an even bigger favorite.

Huron v Southfield

K-Central v Detroit Denby in the A Semi's.

Denby eliminated the defending champs Detroit Pershing last week, that should be a good matchup.

I might have to make time to go to the A semi involving Ann Arbor Huron, one of the largest schools in the state. The River Rats are said to be a well balanced team that includes Jalen Bouma, a tough minded point guard apparently headed to Calvin this fall, who consistently scores about 10 per game. Beating a perennial power like Saginaw Arthur Hill--led by Maurice Jones, one of the state's top players--says something good about Huron's talent level.

I really like what I'm hearing about Bouma and Tyler Kruis and their performances in the high school tournament. If both end up at Calvin next year, as rumored, they will be the foundation for another very strong recruiting class. Recruiting seems to have picked up the last couple years.

From the mlive live chat:

Jalen Bouma is supposedly playing at Calvin College next year.

Heard today that Calvin looks like it will end up with Mitchel Vallie, a 6-5 forward from Goodrich via Grand Blanc. Really tough tweener forward type.

If true, KVS will have to step up his game next year and land a McDonald's All American game participant rather than just a nominee.

Kruis is on Bankhoops.com Class C 3rd team (5 players/team). Vallie and Bouma not listed on the all state teams.

Hmm.... Grand Blanc is my wife's hometown.  When I met my Hope friends for games in Adrian, I was secretly torn in allegiance (Desmond Young).  Am I now going to have to secretly cheer for Calvin?! ;)

Hope, you could trump them with an Ypsi recruit! ;D  (Though YHS seems to have d1 players or not much. :(  Connor Heine [who I coached for years in youth soccer] might be a legitimate d3 bball player, but most years we seem to have little between conceivable NBAers and HS-is-it players.)

Vallie was #10 on the BankHoops Wing prospect list from last spring.

Bouma has good quickness and seems to be an excellent ball handler, not much of a scorer other than layups today.  He doesn't start for AA Huron which isn't really a knock on him as much it says how good Huron's starting back-court is.......I imagine AJ Mathew and Matt Hastings will be getting D1 looks this summer.  John Beilein was at the semi's today and it wouldn't shock me at all if he he was there to see those two.......as an Ann Arbor resident he may have just been there to show support.  I might call Bouma a diamond in the rough, he's not going to show up at Calvin and beat out Powell or Salo.

The Class A final Saturday is a rematch of a game last season.  I saw Ann Arbor Huron and Kalamazoo Central last year in the regional semi's here in Lansing and it was a very entertaining game.  Both are very well coached teams who seem to play a similar style, though Huron looks for the long ball more often.  Huron doesn't look like much in warmups but those kids can play and if they can knock off Saginaw Arthur Hill, they can beat K-Central.

However, Michael Thomas is quickly proving to be an excellent basketball coach, and he has his team playing some very sound unselfish basketball.  They picked apart Detroit Denby today and Denby thrashed the defending champ Pershing last week (who beat KC in the finals last year).

KC whipped the two best teams in Lansing pretty easily last week, which surprised the heck out of me.  I really thought Lansing Eastern could push the Maroon Giants but it wasn't much of a game at all, and they did the same to Holt the following night.

This is looking more and more like Kalamazoo Central's year.......but a special kudos maybe to the MHSAA for breaking up the Regional in Lansing that included both Huron and K-Central last year.

Van Wieren, Davalaar, and Mike Turner were in the house at the Breslin today........and I think I saw Mark White talking to Beilein but I'm not sure.

.....and Fred Jackson, and if you know who that is, give yourself +k

How could you have missed oldknight? :o  I even wore my new Calvin hat as a show of support to Ann Arbor Huron.

Despite the fact that Bouma doesn't start he is the third leading scorer on the River Rats team at 10 per game. I suspect that most of those points come in transition. He's got excellent quickness and great hops. I saw him two hand a dunk in pregame warmups and he's a sure ball handler. The Huron senior I sat next to told me that Jalen is a terrific baseball player.
