That is interesting news about Campbell.  It certainly would make matters easier, especailly in the pre-conference games, to have another person with his experience available.  In fact not having to replace him really does change the dynamic considerably if you factor in his picking up even 5 or 6 minutes a game.

Given that Campbell averaged over 19 minutes this past season and got the most PT of any non-starter, I'm pretty sure he's expecting to play more than 5-6 minutes a game next year.

I think he meant additional minutes.

It would be a plus to have Campbell and his experience back, but I would prefer to see him come off the bench. He seems like a "glue guy" to me--not outstanding in any one area of the game, but he can come in and give some quality minutes and do a little of everything.

OK, I admit I'm being silly, but it is a FACT that Miguel Cabrera is currently on pace to hit .571, with 108 HRs and 378 RBIs! ;D

Unfortunately, not all opponents have a bullpen like KC. :(

You are correct KS I did mean additional minutes.  KVS seems to like starters in that 25 to 30 mpg pt range.  Looking at Calvin's returning players one can come up with several likely groups of starters, and I am sure we will see lots of experimenting with different combinations before Christmas break.

Granted Calvin is losing only 2 starters, but it's 3 sr's from this season accounted for 43% of the scoring, 40% of the rebounds, and played 37% of the minutes.

It's baseball season so I'm thinking Sabermetrics (or APBRmetrics, since we're talking basketball, which I probably will attempt to apply to the MIAA next season, but probably fit poorly in the college game).

I wonder what Paul Campbell's VORP and WAR would be? The tricky part would be establishing replacement level in D3 basketball (maybe we can use Alma's numbers? :)). Just to take a wild stab, I would guess his WAR might be in the 0.4 range, which would indicate he wouldn't be extremely difficult to replace. Mantel and Veltema's WAR numbers would be another story.

+k for anyone that can develop a PECOTA model to forcast future MIAA production using JV (or even HS) statistics.

I kind of want to log in every day for a few months, just to give you constant applause karma for this post. Fantastic!

Congrats to Calvin assistant Mark Christner on being named head basketball coach at Waynesburg. He'll have a job to do in turning that program around. They've combined four wins in the past hree seasons of PrAC play.

Mark's heading to Waynesburg, PA, a woeful D3 program.  He might have more success (and fun) taking a job in Wayne's World, even if it means living in a basement in Aurora, IL.

I enjoyed myself last time I was in Aurora.  ;)

Taking over a program that is coming off a 2-22 season may not be such a bad career move.  Expectations for the first year or two should be realistically low, and allow Mark time to become familiar with Waynesburg and become known to h.s. coaches and players in his recruiting area.  By the 3rd or 4th year he could put together a respectable program.
This move also allows Mark to get out of KVS's shadow, and will allow him to build a record of his own.  This would seem to be important criteria should he want a shot at replacing KVS at some time in the future.
The A.D. at Waynesburg coached the b-ball program for many years, and reading between the lines sounds like a guy that may be a willing mentor to a new coach.

It can also be a source of tension to have a new coach play underneath an AD who was also his predecessor as coach. The possibility exists for boundary issues, unless the AD goes to great lengths to adopt a hands-off attitude towards the program right away.

AD Rudy Marisa isn't the immediately preceding coach, for what it's worth. He is now seven years removed from being the head coach.

John Mantel and Matt Veltema will be taking part in an exhibition event held on Saturday at the Palace. John will be in the slam dunk contest while Matt will be in the three point shootout. The event features a mix of Michigan high school and college players.

Congrats to Matt Veltema who won the 3-point shootout last night at the Swish and Slam! Mantel declined his invite to this event a loooong time ago, not sure why they still had him listed. The All-Star game was the perfect way to end his career, just a great time of fun camaraderie with the other players from around the country. I'm so glad Veltema had the opportunity to show his stuff last night. He was an outstanding player.
