John Mantel and Matt Veltema will be taking part in an exhibition event held on Saturday at the Palace. John will be in the slam dunk contest while Matt will be in the three point shootout. The event features a mix of Michigan high school and college players.

Congrats to Matt Veltema who won the 3-point shootout last night at the Swish and Slam! Mantel declined his invite to this event a loooong time ago, not sure why they still had him listed. The All-Star game was the perfect way to end his career, just a great time of fun camaraderie with the other players from around the country. I'm so glad Veltema had the opportunity to show his stuff last night. He was an outstanding player.

And as sac expected, Doug Anderson was the easy slam dunk winner.

Mr. Ypsi

I hope no one objects to this being Tiger central (MLB doesn't really overlap the d3 basketball season at all).

The Tigers stranded 18 runners in a 9 inning game for the first time in NINETY years - and won!  They are now 5-1.

Unfortunately, they now have to play much better teams than the Royals and Indians. :P

But they still hit .316 with runners in scoring position so that number looks worse than it actually was.

Doug Anderson's winning dunk:

WOW, that is impressive.  Sounds like he needs to now focus on other areas of his game to develop.  Always a little disappointing when you get a guy that is freakishly athletic but all he has concentrated on is dunking instead of being a well-rounded ball player.

Just curious, did Anderson go the JUCO route to further develop his game or was he forced to because of grades and academics?

I don't believe he had the grades.  If he did, I think someone would have given him a scholarship.  He would bring some people to watch.

Thanks for posting again CCM.  Yes it was nice that John got into that game in Salem.

Thanks. Jake's doing great. Worked hard all year and his back is much better. Thanks for asking.

Mr. Ypsi

Tigers' fielders played two separate games today.  In the first three innings, they turned three double plays, and led 2-0.  The rest of the way they committed FOUR errors, and lost 10-5.

I hadn't notice the schedule before - they are again playing the Royals, so their 5-2 start is tainted a bit by being against the two worst teams in the division

But even against the worst two teams in the division, 5-2 is none too shabby.

True that - but I'll be much more impressed if they can pull 5-2 against the Twins and ChiSox.  Or Yankees and BoSox. :D

And while players don't actually sign anything for Division III schools, the University of Chicago got a pledge from 6-3 Derrick Davis, a consensus Class B all-stater from Bridgeport. He had a DI offer from North Dakota State and various D2 offers.

A good pickup for the Chicago Maroons??

SBell

He has nearly a 40-inch vertical and can guard three positions at the D3 level, so I'd say it's more than a good pickup.

Is the Nathaniel VanEck charged with setting off pop bottle bombs, the same Van Eck from Calvin's JV roster?
