which I find shocking because all teachers are basically forced to acquire one now and the salary perks for holding one are quite nice as well.

I'm sure he will be missed in the Hope program.  Will GVW make himself available as a mentor and helper of the program.

This should make the upcoming MIAA campaign VERY interesting as Hope was most likely going to be the preseason favorite.  Should make for a wide open race, maybe even more so than this year.

Interesting comment made to the MLive article about GVW.  Someone speculated Mickey Phelps as a possible candidate.  Not being located in W. Mich. is that even a possibility, does Phelps have the qualifications or Hope ties for that to work out?

Just tossing out a name someone else had brought up, admittedly I have no idea if that even makes sense.

I bet Hope's kicking themselves that they missed out on Christner.

their roster will still be fairly stacked with good, experienced players.  Can't imagine a change will hurt at all, most likely help.  No recruits to reconsider a decision  and returning players excited for a change.  They will respond well to this.

Forgive my ignorance, but who is Matt Neil, and who is Mark Werley?

Phelps is probably 61 or 62 years old.

Matt Neil is a long term assistant coach of Hope with one son on the varsity team and another graduating from high school this year.  Mark Werley was a successful coach for Holland High for many years and is now currently the athletic director of Zeeland West as well as the assistant basketball coach.

Best bet to replace Glenn would have to be either Morehoude or someone from outside michigan.

Neil is a great assistant coach but I don't know if he is head coach material. If he is then that's great, but I personally don't know if he's up to it. Ten years ago I would have said that Werley would be a great replacement but It's been almost a decade since he coached basketball.

Dutchfan

Sorry, that should say Morehouse not morehoude. My bad.  :)

From The Sentinel:

"Holland, MI —

Hope College will begin a nationwide search for a new men's basketball coach immediately, President James E. Bultman said during this evening's press conference announcing Glenn Van Wieren's retirement.

A committee, chaired by kinesiology chairman Mark Northuis, will lead the hiring process, Bultman said.

There was no timetable Tuesday for when the new coach will be hired, Bultman said. Internal and external candidates will be considered, he added.

Van Wieren endorsed longtime assistant and former Hope player Matt Neil to replace him Tuesday."

I would suggest that speculation may be fun, but is pointless and potentially harmful.
