A tip of the hat to GVW and a classy ending to a distinguished career. I'm not particularly surprised that he chose this season to call it quits. He's 68 and still appears young and healthy enough to commit his time to his wife and other pursuits. It's always best to not hang on too long, I sense he's very much at peace with his decision and he surely knows no one is truly indepensable. The Hope job certainly should attract plenty of qualified candidates. I have no idea who the school will pick but I expect it won't stray too far from those who are in some way connected with the school or its mission.

CM:  I understand what you are saying, but think you can also look at it as a celebration that GVW got to go out when he wanted and the way he wanted with his head held high.  Compare that to what happened to Eddie D. at Calvin or "Smokin Joe at Kalamazoo.
I have been in the position of having trusted, valued employees tell me they were applying for another position at another company.  I respected them for having the personal strenght and integrity to let me know, and wished them well while at the same time assuring them if it didn't work out their position was secure.   My advice to any coach at any college that holds a grudge or recriminates against them for trying to get a better position is they should leave as fast as they can.   :)

I have heard Tom Slyder from Anderson has thrown his name in the ring so he can finally get his shot at Calvin. :)

I was thinking of this earlier but don't know where to find it.........was GVW a JV coach at Hope?.....or better, what where his credentials before being hired as the Hope coach?

I know he was at Grand Haven in some capacity at some time.

Anyone know?

There is nothing wrong with speculation. Glenn isn't dead, he's just retired. What harm can you do by speculating?

Agreed. This is open for conversation.

No one said it wasn't but we've had people who aren't even associated with Hope throwing in names of coaches from other programs and a couple high school coaches who probably aren't even going to apply thrown in the ring.........all within less than 6 hours of the announcement.

Random speculation is neither healthy nor wise, that is all hopeconvert was trying to convey.

What would you like us to talk about then, Sac?

I just ask people be smart about it and not irresponsibly throw names around, especially those who might already have very good jobs with employers they'd like to remain having a good relationship with.

I have never said you or anyone can't talk about anything.

Sac I hardly think anyone is going to lose their coaching possition just because we speculated about them on these here. Anyone stupid enough to fire someone based on what we say here isn't someone you want to be working for anyways.

I just think he was the (only) varsity assistant for a time, and also might think they didn't have JV back then. My guess is that the JV started after he was there sometime in the 1970s, but that's just conjecture.

Oh, without a doubt!  And those I've talked to would agree.  I didn't mean to imply that it was just mourning.  We all are just kind of still in shock, and to discuss his predecessor while the shock is still in full force feels weird.  I, at least, need to absorb the announcement before I can start looking forward, and it's likely to take me a couple more days.   :)

The Tigers of course...  ;)

That, so far, has pretty much been me. :P

While the first-place Tigers are 6-3, it is so far against just KC and Cleveland.  I'm worried what might happen when they have to play major league teams. ::)

According to the Holland Sentinel (unfortunately, not always a reliable source,)  GVW "spent 47 years at his alma mater playing and coaching."  Thirty-three years as head coach and 4 as a student leaves 10 years at Hope in some other capacity;  Which of course, does not answer the question, but I have wondered what he did before he became head coach as well.

The only assistant ???, you're kidding right?  That is close to blasphemy to have only one assistant coach at hope college.  so who did they get to fill up the team pictures then or was that back before cameras had the capability to take a panoramic photo and squeeze the one coach per player ratio in to the picture.  If that was the case I guess it made sense at the time to only have one assistant.  ;D ;D

Yes, Glenn was JV coach at Hope. My memory is deficient on how long but it seems to me it was approximately 5-6 years. At the time it seemed obvious that he was being groomed to take over from Russ DeVette.

Sac -

In regards to your question about GVW, I took a quick glance at one of the press releases and it states:

"While at Hope, he also coached baseball, cross country and soccer."

Not sure of the years of service, but I do remember him being the coach of CC and Soccer while I was at Hope (yes, that would be the dark ages!).
