Correct me if I'm wrong (as if I would expect anything less from this bunch  ;D ), but I believe that Coach VanWieren has not been teaching for the past two years.  While they may be interested in a more versatile person to fill the coaching position, I'm not sure that its urgent that they find a professor in the process as well.  Time will tell...

More importantly, welcome, Angolabballnut!  It's always good to have a voice from outside of the Hope/Calvin realm.  While I can't answer your questions directly at the moment, I hope that others here will over time.  Please hang around...we're glad to have you!  (And anyone from a town with a Pizza King in it is awesome in my book.)   :D

Maybe I'm way off here, but its been my understanding any off-season work has always been led by the returning Sr's or captains.  These last two years, Hope has had a pretty small Sr class contribution with what I would call limited influence.

Captains and/or returning seniors are generally the people who take charge in the off-season at most D3 schools, as far as I can tell. That's why fall open gyms are sometimes called "captain's practices" in some quarters. It's one reason why choosing a captain or captains is a bigger deal than most fans think; a lot of team development depends upon the maturity, dedication, and organizational skills of the player(s) selected, because prior to October 15 the captains are the ones who are responsible for getting everybody on the court for open gym and on the track (or wherever it is that the team runs), running the games, leading the stretching and calisthenics, pushing everyone to do their weight work, etc.

If you really want pizza (or Italian food in general) when you're in Angola, then Caruso's out on County Rd. 200 over by Crooked Lake is the place to go.

With all the deserving talk about Hope and Calvin, I am a basketball fan in Angola Indiana, what is the overall thought on Trine's (I think) talented freshman class?  I hear they have a sleeper in Noah Veach (Grand Haven) which adds much needed toughness and they have a transfer big coming in.  Anybody have any thoughts about Graham, Rogers, or/ or Ian Jackson?
Thanks

Welcome to the board! It is great to have some representation on these boards from Trine, where we haven't had too much commentary in the past.  One of the things I've enjoyed most about this board is the insights from people who attend the games, not just reading box scores.  My guess is that Trine is probably the least-visited stop on the MIAA circuit for people attending away games, so I'm looking forward to getting this type of insight from you and hopefully other Trine fans this season too.   I hope you find this board a welcoming place, angolabballnut.

GS - Telling a Hoosier that any kind of pizza other than Pizza King is good is fightin' words.  That's several magniutudes worse than saying the annual game between Hope and Trininty Christian is pre-season.  :D

The First Law of Pizza is that franchise pizza is the worst pizza. Always go with a mom-and-pop, single-location pizzeria over a franchise, unless you're looking to eat on the cheap.

Anyway, according to the Pizza King site, there isn't one in Angola. I'm not saying that Civic Minded is wrong, since I haven't been in Angola since last September, and it isn't as though I know the town like the back of my hand -- but the Pizza King store locator doesn't show an Angola franchise. My sister and brother-in-law, who are Hoosiers, are fans of Hungry Howie's pizza -- and I know that there's a Hungry Howie's franchise in Angola.

Trust me - there is a Pizza King in Angola.  Been there every year since Trine (Tri-State at the time) joined the MIAA.  Driven through blizzards to attend games there - partly because of the promise of Pizza King pizza after the game.

I found it interesting that the head of the Kinesology dept. is the chair of the selection comm., and assumed the b-ball coach would report to that position instead of the AD.  I also wondered if having the "Prof" qualification meant it was easier to slip some extra $$ for the position? ;)
As someone mentioned early on many colleges like to have the number of PHD's as high as possible.
Welcome Angola........  It is indeed good to hear from a Trine follower.  I really don't have any special insight into your question.  Trine has seemed to be a bit of an enigma the past several seasons.  I expected them to be more competitive than they turned out, and player turnover sure hasn't helped.
The fact Rogers was 2nd team All MIAA speaks volumes about how others in the conference view him as a player.

I think many on this forum agree that he probably deserved 1st team based on his numbers. I think the fact that he played on a bottom feeding team hurtin him there.

Ian Jackson will probably start the season on my 2nd team All-MIAA watch list.

Trine has a pretty nice core of young talent; they'll be an interesting team to watch the next few years.

It looks like some Calvin students are putting their new sports facilities into good use.

I actually had Rogers on my personal 1st team all-MIAA this year which I posted on this board when the season ended.

He also topped the MIAA in dunks this year with 10, which I tracked just for kicks and grins.  (no this was not a criteria for my all-MIAA picks!)

WHISPERS -

For those of you who follow pro football, there is a website and publication called Pro Football Weekly.  It is a great publication and always has a section called "WHISPERS".  I thought as Hope College begins it search for a new Men's Basketball coach, we could start our own MIAA Whispers thread, so here it goes.....................

New Head Coach, Matt Neil
New Lead Assistant Head Coach, Chad Carlson
2nd Assistant Coach, Steve Windemuller (current Holland High boys bball coach)
JV Coach, Jeff Carlson

A few years down the road........................

New Head Coach, Chad Carlson

You seem to be missing a few names.  Last time I looked, there were more suits than players on that Hope bench.  ;)

You need to look very closely. The last 20 or 30 on the bench are simply JoS. A. Banks mannequins.

I know all of you are enjoying the talk on who the next Hope coach is, but I thought I would change the subject. Alma has a webcam inside in its new facility. They have been painting the lines this morning, so here is the link, so you can chat about something else.
