"I seriously doubt that Tim S. has any say about who will be the next b-ball coach."
In retrospect I should have said "much say" instead of "any say".  It was not my intent to imply that Tim S. was not involved, merely that his voice would not be the loudest or carry the greatest weight.  Tim has only been AD for a short time. :)  I do feel that getting the player's input makes some sense I just don't feel they carry that much weight in the final choice. :)

hoopdreams.  You have much more insight into the situation at Hope than I do.  My observations are strictly those of an outsider, but I do have years of experience in terms of organizational management.   :)
I agree there is a comm. in place, but I also ask who do those comm. members report to as staff?  Does Tim S. report to the Head of the dept.?   Do all comm. members report to the head of the dept.? If so how strongly do any of them (including Tim) argue for any specific candidate with "the boss"? ???  Read this as the choice of a new coach is to important for a "mere" AD to decide. :)
The very fact that GVW now finds it necessary to lobby so hard for Matt speaks volumes.
If GVW's opinion really mattered why isn't he (Matt) annointed already?
If the opinion of others in the Hope "family" is valued why isn't he (Matt)annointed already?  Assuming everyone is united behind Matt. :)
As an outside observer it appears that some pretty serious "politics" are at play in this situation, and everything is far more complicated than it might first appear.  My guess is GVW may have thrown his weight around while he reigned as bball coach, and this is someone's (dept. head, college Pres.) chance for a bit of payback.  It also may be a means to make sure the tail does not wag the dog going forward. :o
From a very practical standpoint the "teaching" aspect of the job would indicate it is tenure track.  If the new coach is not successful it is easier, and less messy to deny tenure to force them out than it is to teminate the person from a "staff" position.
The fact the softball coach got that staff position also points to the direction the bball coach is coming from.   :)

My late father used to use this phrase once in a while:  "If bulls**t was music you'd be a brass band."  Thanks for jogging my memory.  ;)

devossed- thanks for the tip that Glenn has been lobbying for a month now.  It further justifies my comment that if  Hopes players input into the hire was irrelevant, why is he calling everyone?  For a month?    An earlier poster " I seriously doubt that the new coach is going to be decided by a popular vote of players and parents".  I would like to think that the returning players thoughts on the man who will become an important figure in their lives for the next 1, 2 or 3 years may be of at least a little importance.  It's just speculation though.

Quit trying to make a mountain out of a molehill, all coaches who retire in some way try to influence the next hire.

See Lloyd Carr, Mike Turner etc etc.

After many days of insignificant postings the last several weeks (including a couple of mine), there is a flurry of activity once people start to weigh in on the Hope head job. I think I'll join the fun. When it reigns reins rains, it pours. ;)

If Hope is looking for the best proven coach to take over, I don't think the choice is that difficult; Van Haaften clearly is their man. He took over a pedestrian Buena Vista program and immediately turned it into a regular, top-of-the-IIAC power that consistently has 20 win seasons and NCAA appearances. He got to 200 career wins in only his 251st as head coach, faster than anyone in NCAA history and ahead of Roy Williams and Denny Crum. It doesn't appear that anyone else being considered for the Hope job has a resume' nearly as impressive as Van Haaften's.

His hiring would also be Hope's second this spring of a coach with a Pella connection. Mary Vande Hoef, was just chosen to take over the reigns rains reins of Hope's softball program and she is a 2003 grad of Hope's sister school, Central College in Pella. My wife is from Pella and my sources there tell me Van Haaften (while technically from Leighton) played at Pella High School where he was a well respected prepster. He also grew up in the RCA which may or may not be an advantage. Best of all (from Hope's point of view) his high school's nickname is the Little Dutch, which means now that Van Haaften is grown up he should get along famously with Big Dutchmen.

quit trying to act as though you're the only person with a relevant post.  I was simply trying to support my intial post, which was dismissed by someone else, with another comment made by someone else.  Is this making a mountain of a molehill, speculating, or supporting an initial comment which was questioned/dismissed as outlandish?

I could give 2 s%$ts about who Hope hires, it has no impact on my life.  I just like commenting on message  boards about things a may or may not know anything about. I'm just speculating on my knowledge of course.

For someone who doesn't care, your last 22 posts are about the Hope job.  Constantly stirring the pot for reactions sometimes just stirs up trouble.

For those not in the loop, who are the 3 finalists.  I've heard the Neil name and Van Haaften (sp?) names mentioned but didn't happen to see a 3rd unless I just missed it.  Have the 3 finalists been publicly announced?

Gregory Sager

AFAIK, the names of the three finalists for the Hope job have not been released to the public.

Everyone seems to know that Neil and Van Haaften are two of them, of course, so there's no point in keeping mum about their identities. But the third candidate is also a current college head coach, and, while there is some indication that his candidacy for the Hope job is not exactly a well-kept secret, I certainly don't want to be the one to spill the beans by naming him in a public forum and thereby risk tarnishing his relationships with his players, his co-workers, and his school.

So does anyone know, did Chad Carlson ever even enter in to the picture or was he early on deemed as a little too green in the experience area?

Will be VERY interesting to see if an outsider is hired what kind of turnover there would be in the assistants and support staff.  Conceivably a newcomer may want to bring in his own loyal assistants to the program.  Though it is highly unlikely that any outsider has enough current assistants of his own to fill the quota required by Hope College's bball team.  If new coach keeps the number of coaches down there is the possibility that an extra 15-20 courtside spectator seats could be added for the coming season.  Another important question that will be answered in time is, Could this be the end of khaki pants and blue blazers sideline fashion statement?

So many questions and mysteries that have yet to be revealed it is feeling kind of like an episode of Lost   ;)

I'm really hoping that the new coach will move to the orange-shorts look for his staff. I like the idea of FDF being a fashion trailblazer. ;)

If the new Hope coach adopts the metrosexual look for his coaching staff, it could make the Rivalry banter in here a lot more interesting.
