So do folks think that Hope is taking too long to make a decision?  Or that whatever amount they take is the right amount of time?  When the process started, did you expect a decision to be made by now?  Or were you expecting it to be longer than this?  When would be too long? Or not long enough? and why?

I have no horse in this race, just trying to center the discussion.

Ahhhh, thank you GS!  I haven't seen that poor horse get beaten around here in a long time.  Brings a wistful tear to my eye...   ;D   :D   ;D

Mr. Ypsi

Despite the dead horse, I will enter this for the first time! ;)

It depends on which part of the position Hope is more emphasizing.  For a coaching position, the search does seems prolonged.  As a retired academic I can tell you that a search for a faculty member would barely have begun after 6 weeks.  Composing and submitting (plus publication lag) means the position would not have even hit The Chronicle of Higher Education (and similar publications) for three weeks.  Allowing reasonable time for applications is another three weeks.  So screening for faculty positions BEGINS after six weeks!  Allow three-four weeks for notification and on-campus interviews (minimum) - we MAY only be at the half-way point.

With no slur intended on Hope's academics, my strong hunch would be that the coaching position outweighs the faculty position for this hire (a weak academic could be readily compensated for by adjunct faculty; a weak HC, not so much! ;D), but this is just speculation from a distant observer.

My horse in pretty much every race is named Agitated Hope Fan. This horse wins a lot of races.

Good to know you were so worried about it, you looked it up.  You've been played. ;) ;)

..or maybe its the dozens of karma points I've been able to dock myself in the last few weeks.    <that would be sarcasm>

Had a busy day today, not much to report except I've heard from several places now there will be no announcement this week.

So whether you're the agitator or agitated, everyone can go to whatever beach, lake, campground, hotel, casino, bar, deck or living room they're headed to and enjoy what should be one of the better Memorial Day weekends we've had in sometime.

I find it interesting that a lot is being made of the fact that Hope's coach is also a faculty position. I would say that is hardly unique in Division III, and I'm sure (no offense to Ypsi) that an athletics/PE/kinesiology (?) faculty position is not hired under the same timeline as a math department position.

Also, just because no announcement has been made, that doesn't mean that Hope hasn't reached a decision or that a candidate may be mulling over a job offer. For all we know, a candidate may have turned down a job offer, which can lengthen the process.

But if Hope is hiring someone who will be on campus for the next 33 years, six or seven weeks isn't an awful amount of time.

Good points, and no offense taken. ;)  I mentioned that for these circumstances, the 'coach' portion of the appointment probably outweighed the 'faculty' portion.  I was merely observing that IF the faculty portion was being emphasized, six weeks is barely any time at all.

The word I got from someone in Holland is that the committee could not come to a consensus on 1 candidate.  They will interview all 3 candidates again.

It wasn't anyone with the Sentinel was it?

Sometimes searches take longer than expected because the interest level of either party can change over time. The iterations continue until Rich Rodriguez ends up as your coach.

OMG!  That may be the most anti-Hope post ever! :D

Were the original interviews incomplete? Did they forget to ask a question?

They probably forgot to ask 2 critical questions:

1) Can you guarantee a staff larger than the team?

2) Will your staff dress in khaki pant and blue blazers, always, even at home?

I have to believe that's complete nonsense.
