Leyland is sending Galarraga to the plate to exchange lineup cards and to shake Joyce's hand. I must say that the parties closest involved are handling this with complete class.

That's grace!

This may become the second best remembered perfect game in MLB history!

GM is giving Armando a Corvette for his effort. Perhaps they are giving Jim Joyce total control of the "Old GM".

So that's what government loans are for these days? To give professional athletes brand new sports cars?  ;)

Jim Joyce just took the field with tears in his eyes.  The man is clearly hurting.  You can't help but have some empathy for him.  I hope, for his sake, he has no close plays today.

I support Selig intervention as much for Joyce's sake as Galarraga's. Jim Joyce has been a top umpire for a long time and doesn't deserve to have something like this on his record.

Happy Calvin Guy

I'm usually on the side of not changing statistics even in extenuating circumstances, i.e. asterisks for steriod users, etc, but in this case I think it makes sense to reverse the call and give Galarraga his perfect game.  You would only have to wipe one AB off the stat sheet and it wouldn't affect the outcome of the game (something you can only say because it was the 27th out).

Either way, Galarraga won me over as a fan for his uber classy response, both on the field in the heat of the moment and post-game.

Michael Fabiyi from Gary IN West Side HS is coming to Calvin next year. A 6-3 guard was being recruited by Ivy League schools such as Cornell, Penn, and Columbia. Saw a couple videos of him and he appears to be extremely athletic and a really solid defender.

Here is a really nice article on him

His HS coach, Winston Garland, played in the NBA for 7 years.

when word finally gets out as to why this is taking so long, one will find it laughable ( at least I find it amusing), whether the right man is hired or not.  Spent the morning golfing near Holland and the afternoon on campus.  Spoke to 2 people, over a wonderful lunch, whom many would consider "in the Know" and this is being handled like they've never hired anyone before.  Add one, take one away, lots of experience, virtually none, one of  fastest  to 200, one with zero (winning percentage should have little bearing, I know, I know), PH'ds, Masters in nothing relating to health science,  who interviewed well/poorly, etc...

I'm sure the official press release won't go into detail, so one will have to speculate.

Classy moves by all involved in the Tigers debacle last night.  Selig's decision comes as no surprise to me and I can't decide if that's a good thing

At what point do one or both of the the outside candidates decide "perhaps this Hope job isn't as great as I thought it might be"? :)
A reasonable period of time to make an informed decision is what most candidates for any job would expect of the selection process.  At some point the failure to come to a decison (for me or against me) could be perceived as a red warning flag.
I like Hoopdreams choice of the words amusing and laughable.   :)
"If you are catching flack it means you are over the target".  Brietbart.

Mr. Ypsi

While I was not surprised, I wish Bud Light would do the right thing.  This would NOT be a 'slippery slope' since this particular situation may NEVER happen again!  27th 'out' of a perfect game, followed by the 28th consecutive out of a perfect game.

Actually, I wish he would do it more for Jim Joyce than for Armando.  Galarraga (and everyone else) knows he pitched a perfect game, even if it doesn't go into the record books.  I suspect more people will remember his perfect game than will remember anyone else's except Don Larson!  But poor Jim Joyce, an almost universally respected umpire, has been receiving death threats, and his wife and children have been harassed, from crazies who take these things WAY too seriously.  Bud Light has left Jim Joyce hanging out to dry.

The behavior of Joyce, and, especially, Galarraga and Leyland (who both sought out Joyce to comfort HIM!) has been an inspiration.  The behavior of Selig, not so much. >:(
