Mr. Ypsi

Just ran across a great bit of trivia:

mortuum flegellas (you are flogging a dead [horse]) is a quote from Erasmus!

Henceforth, we do not even need the picture - just "as Erasmus would say". ;D

Interesting article on Div 1 recruiting. Like I've said before, you've got to wonder the trickle down effect into Div 2, NAIA, and Div 3 in regards to the regularity of recruiting violations.

Going beyond that, if the NCAA's championship committee can't be fully relied upon to supply accurate regional records, SOS, etc., how can we expect the NCAA to police recruiting integrity in DIII? It makes sense that the DI scene would be much worse because of what is at stake for players and coaches alike, but I am not naive enough to believe DIII is clean.

Mr. Ypsi

A particularly painful loss for the Tigers tonight.  Not so much that they wasted the best game Porcello has pitched in the last month or so, but Ordonez broke his ankle trying to slide into home in the third.  He and Inge will both be out most of the rest of the season (Guillen was also hurt, but it appears less serious - cross fingers!).

At this rate of attrition, we may have to see if the Mud Hens can win the AL Central! :P

Mr. Ypsi

The Tigers are definitely snake-bitten.

Through the second out of the bottom of the 6th inning, Scherzer (Tigers) and Garza (Rays) both had no-hitters going.  After a walk, an error, and a walk, Joyce (Rays) broke Scherzer's no-hitter with a grand slam.  Dang! :P

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this peripherally related MIAA tidbit previously.  My son is attending a basketball camp at Calvin this week, and I saw Chris Fear who was an assistant for Calvin (I think during the 2000 national championship year) helping out.  He was coaching at NAIA Dana College, but I was informed that Dana has shut down its entire campus (and obviously all sports teams) due to financial problems.  Pretty incredible, and tough to be out of a coaching job at this point.

Someone did mention that Dana was having problems, but that was months ago.  You are correct that Chris was at Calvin in the 2000 era.  In fact he came to Calvin with KVS, and coached the jv team a number of years.  He left to take the job at Dana, and from what I understand the program always struggled.  Chris played for KVS at his last job before Calvin, and I assume the two remain friends.

Fear is a far better coach than his record at Dana would indicate.  The college had been on the ropes for a long time and it's remarkable that they were able to compete as well as they did in a really strong NAIA conference.  Chris should be able to land a job and do well at a healthy institution.

BMK:  Sorry, I did not intend to imply that Mr. Fear isn't a good coach.  I just think the entire college, and athletic program struggled due to severe financial situation.  Like you I think Chris should be able to find employment in either NAIA or possibly D3.  If memory serves correct his is from the Iowa, Dakotas area origninally.

Oh, man, my heart is breaking! :(

Top of the ninth, one out, bases loaded, Cabrera at bat.  I'm anticipating a grand slam, or at least a bases clearing double.  'Mighty Miguel' hits into a double play.

I have to give credit where credit is due, that was an unbelievable turn. Longoria is as impressive with the glove as he is with the bat.

So did anyone formulate recruiting classes for Calvin and Hope yet? I remember last year that someone made a list of all commitments and transfers, just curious if anyone knew.

Anybody made it out to the last few weeks of summer ball?

hoopdreams

Their have been bits and pieces thrown about throughout the summer.   Based on the players I have personally watched, seen on youtube, and heard scouting reports from various hs coaches, I would say that Calvin has the "top" class coming in.  Keep in mind that "all talk is irrelevant until we see which kids show up for class in the fall".

I have not watched any games but have heard feedback from a variety of people, including players.  Have not read too much into who is scoring what but am more curious by who has been playing, or not playing.  Knowing that kids do go home and some have jobs, there have been a surprising number of Hope players, expected to play big roles, showing up very sporadically, if at all.

Dutchman followers feel the need to keep things close to the vest in regards to what they have watched thus far, which is their right.  I would be glowing at the play of Soph Colton Overway, who by many accounts more than held his own an the courthouse house team last week, filled with professional players.  Have also heard that there has been a "rebirth" of play by another.

A post after the most recent hope/calvin game mentioned that Clavin had their returning varsity players present but haven't heard of any incoming frosh playing as some have the past couple of years.

I did hear that Hope defeated cornerstone a couple days ago (big win) and they play GVSU at the courthouse tomorrow night.  Possibly will make an appearance for that one.

sorry I couldn't be more specific.

That was me and I haven't done it for 2 reasons

1) there is just a lot less info on recruits.........I haven't heard anything from Albion and very little about other schools

2)  I just haven't felt like digging through the past posts to put it together.  The coaching search occupied my thoughts.

Amen to that......that was one of the gutsiest plays (and best executed) I can remember this year.
