Playing the game in Kalamzoo makes more sense than playing it in Lansing, but seriously does this game really make much sense?  ???

A week before the Alma-WMU game, Western plays University of Illinois, who Doug Gottlieb picks to win the Big 10 this year.  Talk about two games after which the Broncos will still have no idea how good they really are.

Unless they beat Illinios or lose to Alma. They'll know exactly where they stand under one of those circumstances.  ;D

Thanks for the link gohope.  KS: What happens to the strategy if WMU beats Il., and than turns around a loses to Alma?   ;)

Interesting article to read, especially with the recent posts:

From the article:

"The seats at University Arena WMU fans left empty would be filled by those curious about an interesting matchup or delusional Dutch believing they've been watching MAC-level basketball all these years in Holland."

Delusional Dutch.  That has a nice alliteral ring to it.

FWIW - Hope's all-time record against MAC teams (CMU, WMU, and EMU) is 47 - 35 (0.573).

Full disclosure - That does include 0-18 against WMU, but of course that means Hope is 47-17 against CMU and EMU (0.734)

He specifically mentions Holland and the Dutch but I read it as a slam on Hope AND Calvin. He linked the two through the rest of the article so I don't know why he would separate them there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seemed like a cheap shot that really isn't warranted. Unless there is some faction of fans out there that I don't know about, everyone seems pretty realistic about Hope/Calvin's place on the NCAA Basketball food chain.

I'm looking at the Hope all-time series page right now, FDF, and it does not agree with you:

MAC opponent  serieslast game
Ball State  Hope 2 BSU 0  1960
Central Michigan  Hope 4 CMU 6  1910
Eastern Michigan  Hope 11 EMU 5  1958
Northern Illinois  Hope 1 NIU 0  1958
Western Michigan  Hope 13 WMU 30  1951
totals  Hope 31 MAC 41  1960

Perhaps it's a hometown-journalist thing. Kalamazoo is not only the home of WMU, it's also the home of a MIAA member that Hope and Calvin have beaten like a red-headed stepchild over the years.

I wonder how that 30-point whipping of the boys over at Jackson Prison went over.

sac

technically Hope has never beaten a team that was a member of the MAC at the time.

0-6 vs WMU
0-1 vs CMU

..or something like that.

Since the game was played in 1910, I wonder if the wayward lads from Jackson Prison had to play while wearing those old-timey black-and-white-striped jumpsuits with the little black-and-white-striped pillbox hat?

I trust that the Dutch were sporting enough to wear manacles as well in order to make things fair.

And now you know why I have my own data.  The Hope website (in this case) is unfortunately wrong.  It typically has individual game information correct, but some of the compiled stats are just not correct.

For example, the last game between Hope and CMU was in 1991, according to this:

http://www.hope.edu/pr/athletics/mbb/chrono.html#1990

I did state that I was only comparing Hope with CMU, WMU, and EMU.
