I believe Calvin went to CMU during the Veenstra era and beat them.  I think Dan Roundfield was on that CMU team.  Maybe Old Knight, Good Knight, or Jeff Febus could offer more details.

Calvin beat CMU at Knollcrest during the 1972-73 season, when Veenstra was still a high school senior. The Knights were led in a terrific game by point guard, Art Tuls who stole the show--and the ball--from the Chips. I don't remember the score but I think Calvin won by about ten. Roundfield, who would later be an NBA All-Star in Atlanta, was on the CMU squad.

The following year, when Veenstra was a freshmen, Roundfield had his team supplemented by future NBA players Ben Poquette and James McElroy, and they had their way with a youthful Knight team in a game played at a then brand new Rose Arena. Going by memory the final was 68-56 but the score in no way demonstrated CMU's dominance. I still can remember CMU running an out-of-bounds play under their basket with the entry pass being thrown over the backboard for Roundfield who thunder dunked it home. The play was simultaneously exciting and illegal but the refs let it stand. I don't think they knew exactly what happened. Poquette--also a freshmen, and a prized recruit for Dick Parfit--guarded Veenstra and Mark scored 16 on Ben. After the game Coach Parfit joked that he thought he might be able to find a place on his team for Veenstra to play. I believe this was the last men's basketball game between these two schools.

Looks like Terry Smith is moving on from Alma to assist the women's team @ MSU.

Any ideas of who might take over the Alma team?

Not sure how the Calvin men's team should take this youtube video by the Hope men's team.

How on Earth could that be interpreted as a slap in the face?

Really - I mean have we lost all sense of reality around here?

no offense intended, and no offense taken.   :)
It really is a compliment that Hope players choose to measure themselves  by Calvin.

What??  A slap in the face??   ::)

They should take it as motivation to not let their chief rival end their season year after year.  Win some of these rivalry games that matter and they won't show up on a video like that.

1. Any official tally on recruits now that school is flowing?  All talk to this point was speculation, which is a no-no on message boards.
2. Video as motivation?  I do not believe Calvin's national tourney trek will go beyond the MIAA tourney again.  Unless injuries hamper a deep Hope run......
3. What little interest I hold in Ben Ten Women's Basketball has evaporated.  What is MSU thinking?  Their coaching staff live in a shoe?  Smith always has been and always will be a tool.  Great choice to represent your program.  I guess his winning percentage and job stability speaks volumes.

Wouldn't Smith and Suzy Merchant have crossed paths at Grand Valley State?

From the looks of it, Smith will be the 3rd assistant......and in another odd twist, is essentially replacing former Aquinas men's coach Rick Albro who is now the AD at Northview HS.

even worse if they did work at GVSU at the same time.  She would know EXACTLY what she was getting.  Smiths on-court demeanor may be completely different from the person he truly is, but isn't that demeanor enough?  Will he be able to bite his tongue when needed?  Maybe he relates better with females than males because I've spoken to former players from GVSU and LSSU and the reviews are less than glowing.

If Calvin players (or Hope players) need a rather impressive video to motivate them, then the tradition and history of this rivalry, one built by hundreds of players through the years, is lost with this generation. Whatever it takes I guess....

A quick Calvin people search yielded results for Michael Fabiyi, Jordan Brink, Tyler Kruis, and Mitchell Vallie. Other names are currently escaping me.

Re: MIAA recruits.  Now that the academic year has begun, it would be great to get confirmation on who's showed up for class.  Anyone on campuses able to confirm the presence of new recruits (or surprise absences of returning players)?

hoopdreams

WOTS is that Hope will be down one from a year ago.  This I have heard all summer, able to "confirm it", no.  If I've been told incorrectly, my apologies.  No names will be revealed.  Maybe its already been spoken of, i haven't been around much lately.  The courses keep calling me and then laughing, to my dismay.

Hint:  Referred in posts as " looking rather impressive' after the Oakland exhibition game.  Not many shooting guards can shoot roughly 3-13 and still look impressive.  The shots must have "looked" good at their release.

I very, very strongly doubt that this video was constructed as a means to motivate Hope's players.
