To stay consistent with past years posts, I'd like to congratulate the Calvin men's golf team on winning the 2010 MIAA Championship, their first in school history.  Calvin won the final event of the season and closed a 19 shot gap with Trine.

It was a tremendously competitive MIAA season, with the final margin being just 2 shots, and only 37 between 1st and 5th place Olivet.  I'm almost certain the 2 shots is the closest margin in MIAA history.

Hope and Olivet had won every MIAA championship but one since 1978, Olivet 17, Hope 13, Albion 1

This is an important step in the right direction in our quest to wrestle away the Commissioner's Cup from Hope.  It's unusual for Calvin to get this boost from men's golf.  Unfortunately once again we haven't yet won a game in football so will probably have to use that again as our sport to eliminate.....

I was told today that Jim Schipper, MIAA ref and Calvin alum, will be doing some Big 10 games this year.

I'm always shocked that Trine isn't more of a golf powerhouse. As far as I know, it's the only school in D3 that has an on-campus 18-hole golf course.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, the Wooster Country Club is pretty much on the College's campus. I seem to remember it being very close to campus.

Wooster has a 9 hole course on campus.  Wooster CC is down the road a bit.

To my knowledge Trine is also the only D3 with a Golf Management major.  They currently have 31 players on their roster, including a Junior Varsity team.

I imagine its similar to the official PGM program sponsored by the PGA of America, only not accredited by the PGA.

The PGA Golf Management University Program, a 4.5- to 5-year college curriculum for aspiring PGA Professionals is offered at 20 PGA accredited universities nationwide. The program provides students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the golf industry through extensive classroom studies and internship experience. When you graduate, in addition to your college degree, you become a PGA member with 100 percent job placement. For additional information about the PGA Golf Management University Program,

Once upon a time I knew a couple people at Ferris State who went through their PGM program.  I believe at the time it was one of only 3 in the country.....and trivia, it was the first.   Its pretty much a business program with a focus on golf, especially the teaching side of things.  There's also a playing aptitude portion, which includes having to post a certain score to pass the program.  As I recall its a pretty intense program time wise, and no one in the PGM program at the time, had the time to play varsity golf.

Its been 20 years since I looked into that stuff but I imagine it hasn't changed a whole lot.  It's a legit major and program.

Also one of the people I knew who graduated from Ferris' PGM program left golf about 5 years after graduation, and is now a Vice-President of an apparel company in North Carolina, so his PGM degree wasn't a barrier to future success.

One of my teammates at Hope, was/is a PGA teacher at a resort up North, despite not possessing the PGM degree.  He took a slightly different route, but his business degree from Hope didn't hurt getting him in the door.

I imagine not many know what exactly PGA members go through to become members.  But its not exactly as easy as just waking up one day and saying you're a pro.

Wow, I didn't know there was that much that went into that....I guess it's not really what I imagined it to be when I first heard "golf management degree"

On a different topic, since this is the MIAA board of everything....MIAA softball powerhouse Alma announced last week that the softball field will be renovated majorly.

This is a long-needed renovation, and it will go hand-in-hand with the continued Hogan renovation, and football field re-turfing next summer....

Apparently they are on an every-other-year schedule as far as recruiting goes. Large senior class, small junior class, large sophomore class, small freshman class.

Wooster has a 9 hole course on campus.  Wooster CC is down the road a bit.
The WCC is on the opposite side of town; that may not be far away (Wooster's a small town) but it's definitely not on campus.  The 9 hole course was at risk of being shut down as part of the general expansion of athletic facilities; don't know if that happened or not, but in any case the COW teams don't play there.
