Mr. Ypsi

Greg, thanks for the corrections.

Since the injury occurred before the first game, Mr. Bunn would not even have to go through the formality of a medical redshirt if he sat out the season.

On the second correction, I blew the specifics, but had the key point correct - they stress 'season-ending' injury.  So coming back late in the season (even if he played less than 1/3 of the games) would blow any chance at another season.  Here's hoping Mr. Bunn will be at full strength by at least early in the conference season.

"Men's Poll Results (First-place votes in parenthesis): 1. Hope (6) 9 pts. 2. Calvin (2) 14. 3. Olivet 17. 4. Adrian 28. 5. Albion 30. 6. Kalamazoo 38. 6. Trine 38. 8. Alma 49."

A few things we learn from this:

KVS gave a first place vote to Hope
MN gave a first place vote to Calvin
The other coach that voted for Calvin put Hope third (presumably not the Olivet coach).

Interesting. One of the coaches from the group of Adrian, Albion, Alma, Kalamazoo, and Trine must have started their ballot: 1. Calvin, 2. Olivet, 3. Hope. Inquiring minds would like to know which coach thinks Hope will finish third. :-\

I would say chances are it came from Alma....the dislike of Hope in basketball is like a 15 on a 1-10 scale here.....

One would hope that the coaches are voting based on the performance they anticipate from the other schools, not a like or dislike of a particular school.  This isn't junior high after all.

They beat Alma too.

Without Bunn for a while, it will allow other players to enhance their play and develop important roles, and when Peter gets back, they will be that much stronger.

That is my desire for the Knights during the month that Trent Salo will miss. Should give a guy like Jordan Brink more playing time than he otherwise would have.

For those of you wondering about Salo, this information comes courtesy of KnightSlappy's blog:

I just received word from someone connected to the Calvin Athletic Department that Senior point guard Trent Salo has a broken foot and will be out of action until sometime in December.

Really.   ???  You don't think an old fox, or a clever new guy would sand bag just a tad (voting some one 3 or 4 versus the 6 or 7 they really may be) to throw everyone off?  Looking at the numbers, and the possible ways to get to those numbers in the poll just published, and IMHO it looks very similar to how legislative districts get set by politicans. :)

Funny that I just listened to the KVS audio interview last night where he said that Bryan Powell will be moved off the ball some, and that he's not sure if Jordan Brink will play the point or off or both. I think these guys will now be strictly used at the point position until Trent returns.

I'm getting the feeling that freshman SG Michael Fabiyi will be added to the varsity roster, but that's nothing more than speculation on my part at this point.

KS:  One of the things I thought might happen is Salo (B-4 hearing about his injury) would see reduced playing time as the year wore on.  He may really struggle to get back into the rotation if he is out very long.  His style is well suited to the more patterned scheme KVS has historically used, and if he can be believed when he said it, "he is planning to open things up, and move the ball".  I like Salo, and the contribution he brings to the team, but think he loses out on size and atletic ability.

Did the coaches know about Bunn's serious injury before voting?  Hard to believe that Hope would rank # 1 with the uncertainly about Bunn, a critical part of Hope's team and its leading scorer.

You could say you hope that, but I agree with realist...

In my opinion, pre-season polls are pre-season polls, and I don't like to read into them much....at this point of the season, maybe one would vote like that, just to play mind games with a "rival" - though I use that term loosely as you must win once in a while to consider it a rivalry.

Without hearing a medical opinion I doubt they even factored in one player being out for an indefinite period.  Since it is an MIAA "pre-season" poll all MN would have to had said is something like "Mr. Bun has suffered an injury, and at this time we anticipate his return by the time conference play begins.  Ditto for KVS on Salo.  Even with Bunn out I think Hope is still the favorite
