Granted that scheduling is always a two-way deal, but it seems that every time Hope (or Calvin) needs a pool C, their lack of in-region games comes back to haunt them.  My interest is in getting the MIAA more than one team in (Olivet?  Albion?  etc., you listening?)  The overall MIAA needs more in-region games (wins, of course! ;)), but Hope and Calvin (as the perennial leaders) seem to be the worst offenders.

The fact that Wheaton, and to a lesser extent Carthage, isn't in-region for Calvin is ridiculous. Calvin versus Wheaton is exactly the type of matchup that D3 should be encouraging.

Benedictine's on the schedule, they played Lake Forest last year. These games should count.

Why should your closest D3 opponents be out of region?

Totally agree.  As Q has posted, it is rather absurd that IWU/Occidental is in-region, but Calvin/Wheaton is not.  I suppose there have to be rules (which inevitably means there will be absurdities at the edges), but c'mon! :D

I would like the NCAA to come up with some specific exceptions to the general rules, reflecting common sense (and #1 on MY list would be all MIAA teams having an in-region exemption for games in the Chicago area).

Titan Q

Yes, IWU plays @ Cal Lutheran over X-mas...and that is in-region.  Yet Calvin vs Wheaton and Hope vs Carthage are not.

Every D3 vs D3 game should count.  I keep waiting for this rule to change, but I'm not sure if it will.

I'd at least like them to add an adjacent state rule. That would at least eliminate the "Come on! They're right next door!" games that are out of region. Michigan would add Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota (yes, borders that exist in lakes are actual borders).

Dark Knight

Oberlin Yeomen

Yeow!

Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops

Watch out for those mitres... (Why am I put in mind of Monty Python?)

John Carroll Blue Streaks

Can't they afford a uni?

Wabash Little Giants

And their friends, the fat beanpoles.

Hiram Terriers

Their cheer: Yip yip yipee!

Geneva Golden Tornadoes *

Obviously it had to be either that or the whirling gold nuggets, but Golden Tornadoes apparently won out. Both offer interesting opportunities for mascot design.

The 200 mile rule takes care of this problem for just about every school except for Hope and Calvin. Lake Michigan and the administrative region boundaries are geographic problems.

A simple bordering state rule could be prohibitive in the Eastern US because the size of the states are much smaller. (Forgive me for not looking at a region map, this might not actually be a big issue)

So, basically you would need the 200 mile rule and a bordering state rule. By the time all the exceptions are made for the system to make sense they might as well go to a straight up d3 vs. d3 record.

A 200 mile radius would seem to work.

Today's games

MIAA-WHAC Challenge

Alma vs. Madonna at Olivet, 5:30 p.m.
Mich.-Dearborn at Olivet, 7:30 p.m.
livestats for both games found at miaa.org

This is year 3 these 4 teams get together, the MIAA went 4-0 last year, 2-2 in 2009.  Olivet is 4-0.

Madonna is old......the basketball team is 1-3 on the year.  Madonna played, and lost to Eastern Michigan just last night 70-79.  I don't know if that says something about Madonna, or Eastern.  This little get together will be 3 games in 3 nights for the Crusaders.

UM-Dearborn is 0-4, the most interesting thing about the Wolves is they have two former MIAA'ers in Alma's Jordan Redditt and Hope's Doug Sharples.

These matchups look like they should swing in the MIAA's favor on paper at least.

Random silly tidbit......the UM-Dearborn coach and I share the distinction of having lived in Clarksville, Tn.   I was 1 so I don't remember much.

Grading out the Knights:

Not so sure this is an appropritate route to take with these young student athletes.  Certainly not after one game.

C'mon Wiz.  This hyper sensitivity to competition and criticism is being taken a bit to far.  Absolutely nothing wrong with what HCG wrote up.  Should HCG just have given out participation awards to players instead?

Here would be HCG's alternate game report under your guidelines:

-Danny Rodts:  I was at the game and observed that Danny participated in the game action.
-Tom Snikkers:  Tom also participated in the game.
-Mitch Vallie:  Mitch participated too, though not as much as Danny and Tom.

This is what people are talking about on this board when they say there is a "holier than thou" attitude.  I'm pretty sure these "young student athletes" are going to be evaluated and "graded" when it comes to this semester's midterms or even after college when performance review time comes along in in whatever career and job they choose after college.  They can most likely handle it now, and if not, this will help them to learn to handle grading performances for the time that they hit the real working world.  That is assuming they even see something on an internet forum chat.

Folks this is a internet message board forum, don't be so uptight.

HCG, thank you for a nice game report and observations for those that couldn't make it or live out of town.

Pretty amazing that 2 teams account for potentially more than half of all in-region games for an 8 team league. Kalamazoo particularly proves that it's possible to schedule more in-region games. I've always taken the position I'd like to see Hope and Calvin particularly schedule more in-region games and this just reinforces my opinion.

You're missing one key ingredient...Hope and Calvin's records.  It is, in fact, more difficult to schedule in-region games if your potential opponent feels that the game could result in a loss for them that could affect a potential pool c bid.  This continues to be a struggle.  It's not that Hope at least (can't speak for Calvin) isn't trying to get those games scheduled.

I may be wrong (it DOES happen! ;)), but I'm dubious that any of the Chicago-land schools would be 'ducking' you.  You already play Wheaton, of course, but have you seriously tried North Park, Elmhurst, North Central, Aurora, etc.?

Adrian shows just one in-region game but they do have games scheduled against Millikin and North Central. Two opponents that could reasonably be considered "regional". [edit: Isn't Widener in-region based on administrative region?]

As was stated before, Calvin tried scheduling an in-region game for Tuesday but couldn't come up with one. Thus, the game against Davenport.

No, PA is in Region 2 (Pennsylvania and New York), and Michigan is Region 3 (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia.)

I just can't believe that Calvin doesn't schedule more Puerto Rican schools.

Yeah, I just went back and looked at the 2010 handbook. I thought I remembered from Calvin's game against Geneva a couple years ago that it would have been an in-region game except that Geneva was too early in their provisional status. I must have remembered that incorrectly.

Geneva is a defined Great Lakes team (as is the entire PAC), so you did remember corrctly. I guess it's kinda like Defiance being "Midwest" even though they're in Ohio.

Ah yes, the conference loophole. I knew there was one facet we hadn't yet explored.
